I feel like everyone is tremendously underestimating the effect that the difference in timing has had. When WC3 was released, it was one of the best RTS games out there, and - admittedly - also one of the (relatively) few. A game mode like DOTA that combined RPG and FPS elements with RTS mechanics simply didn't exist (unless you count the StarCraft AoS, which was terribly underdeveloped). Game 'genres' like the Silmarillion map also barely existed. Machinima's, or the art of video-game-video's didn't exist either. The modding scene was relatively underground as before that point most map editors had been fairly inaccessible.
WarCraft 3 made all of the above possible and/or large by having an accessible editor and being a very solid base game. StarCraft 2, in contrast, is (arguably) a better e-Sports game, yet is in all other respects worse than or similar to WarCraft 3. The editor is definitely not more accessible, and for as much as it is, practically everything that can be feasibly made with it has been done before as a WarCraft 3 map. The few projects for which this isn't the case (StarCraft Universe comes to mind) are in fact doing great.
In the end, 'WarCraft 3' is 'The Sims', while 'StarCraft 2' is 'The Sims 2'. I'm not sure why people expect the latter to be as busy and revolutionary as the former to begin with.
Edit: I probably should add that Blizzard isn't entirely blameless by a long shot. Campaign support has been mentioned before and is a very valid point. Blizzard doesn't give a shit about long-term single-player experiences, apparently, and they've thrown an entire market wing, no matter how niche, out the window because of it.
Yeah, it feel like even blizzard took a huge dump on the sci-fi
I kinda like the mix of sci-fi with fantasy in starcraft 2 cuz in my opinion the pure sci-fi feels dead. There is something appealing for people including myself in fantasy magic where things just doesn't require scientific explanation to exist. Such worlds feeling more alive than a dead space. I think the existance of that mysteries with protoss and prophecies is what making sc2 universe rich. And that direction is being developed even further with LotV: the barbarian zealots with axes, temples, ancient protoss worlds. Kinda having high expectations.
Promote Custom Campaigns on the SC2 Websites and Reddit!!!
I just shouted out OutsiderXE's maps on the first blog of US website. It is the one about upcoming SC2 books. I think we should be promoting this site in forum posts on the SC Websites and reddit. I've found people lamenting that there is 0 custom campaign maps and bam give them the link to the CCI page.
Anyways!! MY other cent. I came here in 2013 and found the campaign scene pretty dead and fragmented, but slowly discovered the CCI page and it was in disrepair. Compiling all the random campaign maps and updating the news portion every month gives me the perspective that there is a decent scene...nowhere near WC3...and never will be because Fantasy has way more appeal, but an awesome, supportive and high-standards group of mappers.
My third cent...I think Custom Campaigns should get its own forum on the forum page.
Not tooting my own horn here (honest) - I do get messages on a consistent basis from viewers who say they have found/played campaigns after watching them on my channel. You're absolutely right about advertisement. I'm curious to know if anyone saw a meager bump in downloads after any showcases I've done. I know there are people out there that want to play the campaigns that are available - I think it's safe to say that a huge swath of people buying LotV are purchasing it just for the campaign and if they like the Blizzard campaign, I'm certain that they would enjoy the likes of Crimson Moon, Bio-Tech, Brood's Wrath, etc, etc (randomly chosen campaigns here, you know I love you all). Reaching these people is the key! The Starcraft subreddit sort of sucks and is full of elitists, but I think there is a silent majority there that really would like this stuff.
Finding that gateway is something we could all do something small to contribute to, whether it's sharing the CCI/SC2Mapster on Facebook, Reddit, or what have you. Sharing my and others' videos also could open the door more effectively since folks can actually see what these campaigns are before they're instantly turned off by the "complex" installations. We could always use more showcasing from others and I'd be down for some collaboration as well! Obviously, we know it's not hard to install this stuff, but to a new person, they may click away since it only takes a split second for these people to lose interest.
Hock demonstrates a great point with how the scene appears fragmented back in 2013, but once he took the initiative and organized the CCI forum page, things noticeably picked up. If we can give the appearance of excitement and organization, people will come. We live in the clickbait age and maybe that's what we need to be doing on TL and Reddit to get people interested enough to pay us a visit. I'm willing to make a separate installation video for each and every campaign that's out there even if they are all basically the same thing if you all think it could help.
Visit my channel where I showcase custom content! Send me a PM or respond to my YouTube thread if you'd like to see your map/s on my channel (eventually!)
I also believe that getting the word out there will bring many campaign players and makers here. I just want to say a little bit about my story and thoughts. So I have never made any SC2 maps, but I have played many of the custom campaigns. I finished playing the campaigns for WOL and HOTS about a year ago and wanted more content. I then found the Mass Recall website and started playing those. They had a link to Jayborino's youtube channel and I have been hooked since. So by just having links to Jayborino's channel or this website will help a lot by bringing people in. However, I was already aware of custom campaigns from when I was younger playing SC1. I feel that the younger generation who did not play SC1 growing up, probably don't even know that this type of content exists. They finish the SC2 campaigns and think that is it. If they knew about the custom content I feel like they would be more than happy to download and play them. The problem is just telling them where it is. Word of mouth is the key.
What if we could get someone like Lowko who has almost 90K subs and consistently gets over 10K views on his SC2 videos to showcase even 1 of the custom campaign missions? He has showcased the Whispers of Oblivion missions and mentioned that he really enjoys the SC2 campaign. He could link to Jayborinos youtube channel and Bam, we would have many more people checking things out here. Sounds so easy right? But it might be worth a shot. Lowko seems like a really down to earth guy. He could even play it on his livestream on Twitch.
Also, to all the custom content makers out there, keep up the great work! I really appreciate all the hard work it takes and I know a lot of people really enjoy playing what you create.

I don't want to derail the discussion, because that would be rude and I think it's an interesting one, but the idea that we should ask ourselves how to extend the scene as opposed to asking why it isn't bigger, is more appealing to me.
I have a blog. It doesn't get many clicks (around a 100 per week). So far I've only been posting about my SC2 project but I can see myself posting about other people's work once I'm finished with mine.
I can try messaging Lowko on YouTube... YT has notoriously poor private messaging though. Is he on Twitter? That may be the best way to get his attention. I agree, he is one of the best analytical casters these days and has quite the following.

Another thing: I intend for my next campaign to be a somewhat collaborative effort, and have slowly begun recruiting people (as I want to have quality control, I won't take requests). I intend to organize it somewhat like a TV show is organized, where I act as head writer and have final say, but at the same time give considerable freedom for people to explore their own ideas. So I might hand a script out to a mapmaker, and he can do what he wants it with it, as long as he stays within the given boundaries. (Another person might be in charge of custom models, or another might get custom factions.)
I mention this not to hijack this thread and promote my own work, but rather to show that I think the scene is ready for a new level (hopefully generating some enthusiasm in the process). Creating a collaborative campaign could be the next step for us. I want this to be better than what I've created before, and that is going to require some serious talent!
If you're not recruited, fear not! Because the campaigns for each of the races can be played in any order, I'll probably need testers for each of the possible orders to make sure the story makes sense no matter what. That means at least six testers!
I think this is a good idea, and this is also a fairly large component of what is probably holding up most single player campaigns: Teamwork.
From what I've seen, there are plenty of people with ideas and visions, but very few that A) technically minded (ie, they are more interested in building and using the editor as opposed to making a game or B) Willing to work on a team. The issue with both of these is that the editor was entirely designed to be used by a team, not an individual. Hence the different modules and even within the modules, further breakdowns. Most complex maps tend to be backed by teams, at least that I've seen. As some have noted, working alone, they have taken years to build what they have now.
On that same note, there are many things in Void that will help facilitate collaboration. So whatever you may be considering to build, be willing to look for and work with another person, it will go a long way to helping create better campaigns, maps, anything really.
As a personal plug, feel free to reach out to me if you have questions on how to use the editor for this kind of work. Lots of ways to speed work up and/or work collaboratively.

I kinda feel myself like that technical person. I'm getting fun and satisfaction when trying to implement some gameplay mechanics or complex abilities, but rapidly loosing interest after success. Couldn't find motivation to complete the map :(. I like to watch in data forums for a worthy challenges to meet and providing a maps with solutions. Basicaly the more experienced i become with the tool the less interest i have in working with it... I kinda feel shame that after such long period of time i couldnt manage to contribute any map to this community. I hope at least my posts in data forum were somewhat helpful :)
DEFILERRULEZ, how quickly you forget Antioch after calling so many things crap. :-( We're still chugging along on episode 3, expecting to release after we've had time to integrate new content from LotV. It would be really nice if people played it, though the genesis of the thing was really just an inherent desire to see it completed.
I'm not sure how to build the audience for campaigns. Unless Blizzard decides to take pity on us, the arcade is just a crappy medium. It's great that Subjection got a spotlight, but we'll never be able to get the 40 (!) TAC maps into the arcade, let alone support the cross-level secondary objectives, optional progression, etc. I also think that part of our problem is how much of the gaming market is dominated by MOBAs.
I do find the SC2 data editor rather daunting, with all of its different sections and crazy interrelations. I wish that it was a little more clear how things were connected. I'm also constantly discovering new triggers that make me want to go back and re-do everything I've done previously, but that's on me, but not the editor.
As for making campaigns, I can tell you from personal experience that running a campaign team is a lot of work. There are 16 people working on TAC right now, in one capacity or another, and riding herd on that while getting my own work done has been at times overwhelming. I took a break to play MGS5, though, which helped me get my enthusiasm back. If anyone is interested in hearing us talk about what it's like to work on the team, check out .
I think we have an opportunity with LotV coming up and we shouldn't blow it. There will be 2-3 months of hype where Reddit, TL, and Battle.net forums will explode with traffic before dipping again and we should capitalize on it to get people interested. It really would not be time consuming or hard work if people take their excitement and attempt to branch it out to these other, larger forums!
Meanwhile, it's important to get organized and keep discussing ways we can get more exposure to the scene. Iguana and EivindL are completely correct about coming at this from a positive perspective. Rather than commenting on what we don't have, we should reflect on what we do have that is working well and then figure out how to expand on it and push it out to people who want to experience it, but have otherwise not heard about it.
Visit my channel where I showcase custom content! Send me a PM or respond to my YouTube thread if you'd like to see your map/s on my channel (eventually!)
Yea, soon after LoTV release, it'd be great to throw some posts on popular spots like starcraft reddit that could introduce some popular campaigns and how to play them. We could link to Jayborino's explanation video on installing/playing custom campaigns.
First of all i am happy with this discussion, i now understand better the sc2 modding scene, especially if compared with warcraft 3, as a dumbass i forget to mention the few things i knew about the problem, like super powerful / super complex sc2 editor, stupid arcade publishing system with map number limitation, no custom campaign section on sc2 menu and clunky map opening via editor that is an obstacle for new players... All the other stuffs comes new to me, especially the hero importance thing.
The project listed are only examples, there are a lot of good campaigns on the work, i completely forgot about Antioch Chronicles 3...
OutsiderXE i was not blaming you, i took you as an example of how WC3 has more attractive, love your wc3 campaign (the only i didn't like was the last guardian, with that unbearable camera system).
EvindL, i know that between 2012 and 2013, the campaign scene was pretty dead... And then by the end of 2013, the thing restarted to grow.
I forget about some of my favourite campaigns! Biotech Company was great (also EDRIHANO adaptment was nice), Ignos is even better and on development; Odyssey campaign i discovered like 3 years ago; Marauder campaign was simply F - U - N, it was 100% fun to play and watch, even the story was fun, one of the best on sc2mapster; Subjection is a great campaign that blizzard HQ's zombies were so nice to spotlight; Colony M35 and Stukov Man or Monster are great missions, also this one
My negative / sad post turned into a positive wave of advertising hype, as i planned
You must contact big sc2 youtube channels still active like TakeTV, Jakatak and others (sadly dumbasses like Day9 quitted sc2, i am not a huge fan of him, but he has a lot of subs, contact Lowko is a great idea, he is really a nice guy, better of Huskysc, don't even know what the hell happened to him, at least he is still alive...
I am happy to see the campaign scene growing, i was so negative because i saw here 3 / 4 campaigns on development, plus the mega top secret campaigns of Gradius and Ghostnova, vs the dozens of new campaigns on development on hiveworkshop, with the general custom map the situation was even more underwhelming ...
But today we learned a lesson (You can thank me later) , no negativty ! Only advertisement matters ! (this could explain why this site is full of bots spammers)
Holy cow i was forgetting two mega important things !
Number 1) Where is Odyssey mission 10? Why Jayborino refuses to give an answer to this question on youtube ?
Number 2) The Viacre is one, if not the best, campaign/story driven map ever made on the history of sc2, is feelings and deepness at his peek, is like amnesia and sc2 on an oniric / dark setting, JayBorino must play it (oh sorry, should play it, the last time i used "must" i was bitched here on sc2mapster by a """great""" mapmaker, even if the "must" was ironic... ), i suggest you to play it on arcade with some people who already played it, is a hell to understand what you have to do ... http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/viacre-chapter-01-probes/
