Well shit, all this time Curse was just waiting for me to piss off before finally doing something about Sc2Mapster.

    I can dig that.

I talk to Maity on a daily basis, but he's moved on, like me. Doesn't really do anything SC2 related anymore. I have no idea what Zeldarules is up to: I never had much contact with him, and he pretty much but it on the backburner right around the time I came in.

Here's a link to a rar file that should include the latest version of the map plus all the mods required for it so you can give what we have a go. It's still like... pre-alpha, misses 2/3ths of the map, but the combat works and part of the storyline was done.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I've definitely enjoyed my time here and found most of you lot to be lovely folks!

Well this is a some sour news. Now you need to at least pass on the tread to the ones that are active and have already posted some treads on your absence.

I've destickied the old WTE (#255 or something), at least. I'd happily pass the general thread on and such if someone is willing to copy everything over and maintain a new one. If that person sends me a PM I can send them the raw text in a txt file so the lay-out isn't lost. Other than that, there's not much I can do.

tell us at least which game, is it about gaming / modding? what are you in to?

Dungeons & Dragons, mostly. I've taken to DMing, where you can craft the same stories as you could in a game like SC2 but without needing to use stock models or knowing code. It's been a wild ride so far. I still game, but I mostly play Bloodrite (to fill the competitive rush) and Civilization VI (with friends) lately. Aside from that, I've finished my master in Game Studies (how many DnD game masters do you know that can say they are officially a game Master? :D) and am looking at what to do next. Ideally I'll go on towards a PhD in the same realm, but I haven't found an opening yet. I may end up starting something myself, which could end up being anything ranging from Youtube videos on game/story/experience design to an indie dev company.

Sad day! You and Super Evil are the first people I remember from all those years ago. I'd also like to throw my hat into the ring for mod status if possible, I'm on this site all the time.

When it comes to mod status, Curse makes all the decisions. Or well, they would, if they actually made decisions. I'm all for making them some recommendations, but I don't see anybody relevant even bothering to ask about it anytime soon.

    Hey folks,

Just wanted to make a quick thread about this. I haven't been around for something like a month, and I just came back to a bunch of posts about it and a payload of PMs. So in order of importance:

    1. I'm fine, I'm alright. No hospitalization or anything, don't worry about that!

    2. I'd like to apologize for my unannounced absence. Commitments or not, a bunch of you were counting on me for updating the BWTT and the WTE, and I failed to either live up to those expectations or communicate about them without a good reason. My bad entirely.

    3. Perhaps the most significant one: the main reason I haven't been around is simply because I've moved onto other pastures. I wish I could say I've been busy (and this is true to some extent), but being real, I have found time to be active on other forums. I haven't done anything with SC2 mapping in a while, and I haven't been very engaged with the community here either: it now feels like whenever I wasn't just throwing away spam threads, all I was doing was sticking/maintaining the WTE posts and the ocassional BWTT. It's nothing personal: I think many of you are great guys in your own right, I just no longer share enough of the same interest to do the weekly updating of stuff, as last month demonstrated.

Knowing the speed at which Curse operates here, I'll likely never lose my mod status, and I'm happy to sticky the ocassional thread I may come across. Just don't expect too much; it's not unlikely I'll go weeks without checking here again. I'm glad to see people are still WTE-ing it up, at least.

Apologies again, and I wish you all the best.

Just a hint, look at the country of origin of the poster when you read their opinion, and see if you can understand by putting yourself in their CMC Suit...

I can try, but it usually doesn't help me. The thing with the EU is that it definitely has its issues, but most people don't seem to even know the difference between the various insitutions within it, and what their function is. The whole "it isn't democratic" thing does have a basis, but most people who use that argument can't even point that basis out. That annoys me, as it means they're just riding on the wave of populism that is - sadly - gaining traction. Which is exactly why I asked 'prove me wrong' up there.

the EU is an undemocratic elite project formed by lobbyists.

I find that the people who say this often have no idea what they're talking about, or simply like the sound of being able to shout that the EU is corrupt/undemocratic more than actually thinking about what it effectively does in the day to day life of European citizens. Prove me wrong. What exactly is undemocratic about it? And why? And how has this negatively impacted the UK?

posted a message on Bi-Weekly Testing Thread #11: (Campaign Mission) The Hammer of Dawn 8 by EDHRIANO

Hey hey people! After a week of absence, the Bi-Weekly Testing Thread is back!

As per an initiative from JayBorino and me, we've set up the Bi-Weekly Testing Thread, or BWTT, with the purpose of testing specific maps made by community members. What does this mean? Simple: editors in need of feedback suggest their own maps (either via PM to me or JayBorino, or by posting it in the intro thread), and we'll pick one that will be used for the BWTT.

For this edition, we've picked another campaign map by mapper EDHRIANO, who we have seen before in the BWTT. This time, he's looking for people to help test mission 8 of his The Hammer of Dawn campaign, which focuses on a Terran mercenary group taking jobs from a mysterious client. Mission 8, Attack on Titans, can be found here.

For the next two weeks, see if you can check out the map and give your feedback in this thread.

This thread will stay up until tuesday, September 27, at which point I'll upload thread #12. Up until that point, all suggestions for maps that require testing are welcome - please put them in the general thread found here.

Good luck and have fun to all!

I've been stupidly busy for the past 2 weeks. Like... "3 hours of DnD per week and 1 hour of Reddit on the phone per day is all my spare time" busy. If you keep the same format, feel free to put new WTE's up if it takes too long. I'll still need to do all the formatting/linking so it won't save me much time, but you'll at least be able to do your terraining.

posted a message on What is DOTA?

I actually recently wrote about this in my thesis. It's a bit long, but it should tell you everything you want to know:

    Quote:

On the third of July, 2002, game developer Blizzard Entertainment released their game WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos. As a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game, it shared many of its features with its predecessors and contemporaries of the time: the player looks down upon a battlefield from a bird's eye perspective, using the mouse to select troops and order them around the map, the objective usually being to defeat hostile forces and take over certain objectives. The player possesses a 'base' consisting of multiple structures from which more forces can be trained, and resources have to be gathered by non-combatant 'worker'-style units to sustain this model.

One particular type of game mechanic, however, sets WarCraft III apart from other RTS games available at the time: the concept of heroes. These characters are particularly powerful single units that stand out from all others because the player can access their specific abilities when selecting them, such as spells that heal friendly units or skills that stun enemy units. The concept has its roots in the Role Playing Game (RPG) genre: heroes have various unique abilities that can be improved by 'leveling up' the hero through experience gained in combat. They are also able to purchase certain items that can further be used to customize said hero. Part of the skill involved in playing the game is being able to maneuver these impactful heroes while ordering larger groups of troops around.

It is around this time that a map maker only known under the alias 'Eul' asks himself the question: why not automate the control of the troops so the player can focus only on their hero? As a result of this, 'Defense of the Ancients' is born: a custom map for WarCraft III where two AI-controlled factions clash as they send units at each other, and where players each control one highly complex hero with a multitude of abilities. The objective remains the same to regular RTS's: support your forces as they push into and destroy the enemy team's base.

    Quote:

... a large number of characteristics ... can be attributed to the MOBA genre: two teams of five players each are pitted against one another on maps that are usually made up out of three lanes, used by weaker computed-controlled 'minions' to move towards the enemy base. Each player controls a single avatar (called 'hero', 'champion', ' hero' and 'god' in HotS, LoL, DotA2 & Smite respectively) that has access to a set of abilities, usually one passive, three regular, and one very powerful 'heroic' or 'ultimate' ability that is usually not unlocked until some time into a match. Each lane is protected by a number of turrets that prevent the minions from pushing forward and that need to be taken down by a teams' players to progress. Between the lanes is an area of no man's land which holds several neutral objectives that aid the capturing team in pushing forward or becoming more powerful, often called the 'jungle'. The eventual goal for each team is to reach the opponents' base, where destroying forward structures causes your own team to spawn stronger minions, and where destroying the opponents' main structure wins your team the game. Each hero can die, but will come back to life near their team's main structure after a certain amount of time has expired. To gain power, the heroes kill opposing champions and minions to gain access to a small number of either passive or active bonuses.

posted a message on Bi-Weekly Testing Thread #10: (Campaign) Origins by Gradius12

Hey hey people, welcome to yet another Bi-Weekly Testing Thread!

After some online play and some arcade-y style maps, Jay and I figured it was once again time for something to tide over those invested in story and singleplayer. And boy do we have a treat for you. Long-respected mapper Gradius12 has been creating a custom campaign titled 'Origins', which focuses on the Zerg as they grew on Zerus - long before the events of even StarCraft 1 transpired. There's a lot more to it than just that, but I'll just leave it at: it'll be awesome.

For the next two weeks, see if you can check out the maps and give your feedback in this thread. Find the campaign plus install instructions here.

This thread will stay up until tuesday, September 6, at which point I'll upload thread #11. Up until that point, all suggestions for maps that require testing are welcome - please put them in the general thread found here.

Good luck and have fun to all!

posted a message on New terrain «Wasteland»

    Hey there Mocherad!

I saw your video earlier. I generally like what you're doing; you seem to have an aptitude for building city-like environments. My main comment would be that for playability, the area suffers from a more commonly seen problem in that it is too messy. It would be well suited towards a shooter-type game, but for RTS it needs to be clear in the blink of an eye where your units can move or not move. As such, subtly adding in some borders to all the debris lying on the ground (by adding more and connecting it to buildings, for example) would improve it. Additionally, you could add some height and depth to the region. Towns are generally somewhat flatter (either made that way or founded on flat land), but I think a simple hill here or there could help.

I think this discussion is pretty shameful.

I suppose it does bear mentioning that none of that discussion necessarily applies to Banshee Strike; I haven't actually tried the map. It's more that we've had complaints of unplayability in the past and without me trying stuff ahead of time that does potentially form a problem. Sorry Coyc, didn't mean to hijack your thread!

    Carry on!

I don't think anything extra needs to be done. I thought the purpose of these threads is to provide the feedback needed for improvement.

Yes, but it's rather lame and unfair to people who put a lot of work into their map if projects get picked up that aren't even playable without some outside knowledge. Let alone if creators end up disappearing or not even responding to feedback they're getting. I've poked JayBo over this, which is what sparked the discussion. The problem is that sadly, it is a symptom of us not having the will and time to stay involved enough to double check everything. If someone wants to volunteer helping out picking and preparing the BWTT projects, toss me a PM.

For now, let's try to keep discussion relevant to Banshee Strike.
