It's been quite an interesting two weeks, and many submission has been send in to the terraining contest. Because I'm in the middle of my finals and completely stuffed for time, we'll do something easy instead of a WTE this week: public voting! While I'll announce a personal winner next week, you guys can use this week to take a look at all of the submissions to vote for your personal favourite, so we can see who wins the "fan favourite" prize.
To vote, simply make a post here stating which submission you would like to win. Contestants are allowed to vote, but not on their own submissions.
I really liked some of the terrain concepts that I got to see when reviewing your submissions. But I feel like most of them are somewhat incomplete, like you have put a lot of detail to create some small showcase of a new terrain idea, but you didn't have the time to complete the whole terrain. And that's definitelly something understandable, since you only got two weeks for submiting your creations.
I'd really love to see your current terrain concepts to grow and to evolve into a full terrain, and so I'd vote for extending the deadline of this contest for a couple more weeks.
Still, if I'm forced to vote right now for the best terrain concept showcase, I'd vote for "One Wicked Dream, by Maxsvard". Good job there.
I'll vote for Sgt. Noobkilla's The Patrol. His use of lighting is unbelievable.
Edit: After downloading his map I couldn't figure out how the hell he did the lighting. When I went into the lighting editor it just said that it was all one lighting.

To avoid confusion, I'd rather not change all of this up again now. However, this is good food for a new WTE - perhaps something along the lines of expanding one of the contest submissions, making an all-round larger and more complete terrain, or another joint-terraining exercise.
Id like to point out that a more complete version of my terrain is shown further down page 2, it is a shame I didn't get the terrain complete. As for who I will vote for I have yet to decide, it is a tough one, each one has it's own unique and cool elements...
I think I'll have to go with Maxsvard on this one.
Looks like something straight out of Bastion, but pretty awesome in SC2. With a larger area and a more colorful backdrop it could turn into something spectacular.
Would be cool to see a full melee map done in that style.

A new JTE to expand and develop the winning map could be pretty awesome. We haven't had one of those in a while.
KingRadical's terrain is a good idea in making a new race look, but failed in originality and details... The overall terrain looks incomplete to me.
tatatatate's terrain is also a good idea, but lacked details.
Maxsvard's terrain is really interesting and unique... but I would personally not give a 10/10 because of the points I brough up in my commentaries later in the thread. The background is what bugs me the most.
My own terrain is interesting, yet incomplete. There are details, but my idea was by far bigger than that. I would not vote myself even if I could. But, I'm proud of the project I am working on that took this contest place... And if I get it done, I'm sure all of you will want to use it.
joecab's terrain brings light, color, shiny optoss... It a whole new feeling... it's joyful. When you look at that terrain you can't be depressed...just like if you was looking at mine, haha. There are quite alot of details...but I still feel it as incomplete. There are so many possibilities of things that could have been added I think.
ScrinKing's terrain lacks diversity. I find it too boring... I know I'm straight sometimes...
Cacho56's terrain brings us a good ol'town with a whole story told by original use of doodads... Overall it's not the best looking terrain, or the one with the most direct effect, but it's really interesting...
sgtnoobkilla's terrain is all about mountains... and few guys. The map edge is what prevent the terrain from beeing more epic. A 50% scale would have made this a whole new story. But something is happening here, it's in action...
Nebuli2's terrain is just epic. He kept re-ajusting it, adding small details, and made this terrain a story teller.
Sooo... I still have to pick through 5 terrains that I liked... which means I must eliminate the ones I like slightly less. Based on the quality and overall detail of the terrain, I won't vote joecab, something more had to be happening instead of a static place and I won't vote sgtnoobkilla because overall there is no originality in the doodad use execpt the unit. Now I'm at 3... either Maxsvard, Cacho56 or Nebuli2. Nebuli2 has greatly improved his terrain over time... and the story telling of Cacho is just great. Maxsvard'S terrain needs a little more of something to create a deeper feeling... Now, I think Nebuli2 deserves the victory by his constant improvement followed closely by the Cacho56's story.
I love everyone who participated, you all deserves a piece of victory for trying. Keep up improving!
Little note: Do I always have to make huge text to say what I think?... Yes. <3

There is? Sorry about that, I tried to link to the latest versions of every terrain I could find. I'll rectify the situation as soon as I get access to my pc again.
As for the JTE based around expanding the winner's terrain... Some terrains aren't as suitable for this, but I'll see what I can do!
Some really interesting submissions. The three that really stood out in my mind were Nebuli, sgtnoobkilla, and Maxsvard:
sgtnoobkilla's terrain is hard to compliment. It is really the idea that jumps at you with his pictures, you know what he wants to accomplish. The pictures tell a very compelling story, the two view points excellent for this purpose. You know something is going on by looking at these pictures and you're interested. Lighting is also very good. Like I feel bad but the terrain itself, only thing good is the grassy hill and the soldier models upon it. You look to the town, road, other hill, and you're disappointed. Immediately drags you in, got you interested, but objectively, some interesting foliage work, good lighting work but not much else. Definitely got potential.
Maxsvard features a terrain which makes great use of the standard camera position which all the textures and doodads are made for, even though I know the inspiration I would still call it very unique. The ashes and blue particles are excellent additions, adding to a 'floaty' feeling. The textures have little going on for them, I do think you could have gotten away with some pretty serious texture work, textures are less busy than doodads. The background is abysmal. Having Zeratul in it might not have been the best decision, he could make it more apparent that this isn't its own universe, this is still Starcraft, the way he is facing straight forward is also a little strange. The cluttered mix of doodads looks good, but if you think of were your eyes are drawn, at least for me it's the little jungle cliff, then the junk mix higher up, those areas are great. If you think what makes them great, though, it is that cluttered beauty that's hard to describe. Anyway if you then look towards the crystal it looks out of place, it needed some smaller crystals, some blue shards and particles floating. Then of course you think how would a larger area with a crystal theme look, and the area Maxsvard used starts to feel a bit cramped... It is a terrain that leaves you wanting more, but also feeling more could've been done.
Nebuli's terrain has excellent lighting and crisp colours. The sun shining on the bridge is so good, but the rest of the bridge is a little dark IMO, I would have liked some more visible detail. The exterior pictures, they're good, but they don't tell you much of what kind of ship it is, no familiar shapes or objects. And the Umojan doodads are ridiculously white compared to the rest of the ship. In the interior laboratory picture there are only three models in focus against a blurred out background, don't get me wrong it works, but I would want to have more models in focus, you don't want the Blizzard modellers doing half your work. I realize the armoury picture is the same but the doodads are much more fit for purpose and they blend together better, so you know more thought have been put in. Overall though, these pictures are consistently pleasant to look at, simple, some minimalistic, the exterior ship pictures are a bit busier but it still isn't overdone.
It is for those reasons my vote goes to Umojan Research Ship, by Nebuli2.
I have to give it to sgtnoobkilla's The Patrol
you all rock with the maps submissions but The Patrol i could not get mi eyes away from im a Battlefield and Ghost Recon veteran so i know this is my Vote.
Thank you for making it downloadable so we can look further in detail and learn from. For the the next WTE please suggest making the WTE submissions available thats something we all can benefit greatly thank you to all great job.

Pls rename mine to uh "Too close to the sun" or something, I don't know.
I vote for
Umm...
Oh man, I can't decide between the last two. I have to think...

@Mozared: Go
JTE could be interesting, no matter the subject :D
Working on projects:
All the submissions are pretty great, but I think I'll have to go with sgtnoobkilla's The Patrol. Love the lighting, details and camera angles. :)
Edit: JTE? I know about WTEs for Terrain and MDEs for Data, but what are JTEs? o.O
One Wicked Dream, by Maxsvard
I don't know if it was a conscious decision or not, but the color scheme is just fantastic.

Joint Terraining Exercise. One map that gets passed around between the participants, and each person adds to it.
