I wonder how it affects to map's popularity if map gets updated the same day the expansion is going to be released and there is many people hesitant to get HotS for some strange reasons.
As far I'm aware, those who try to play map which uses HotS's Dependency File gets blocked from playing the map if they have not bought the expansion.
I really hope they had the foresight to either filter or tag maps that require HotS for people that won't be getting it so soon. Guess we might be seeing multiple versions of certain maps being published. The WoL version and HotS one. Community segregation. Yay!
Here's the official statement on it. Basically, here's the deal:
HotS and WoL are both part of the same client. Players will choose which "version" of the game they want to play in a dropdown, which will change the ladder they are on, the campaign they see, and the arcade maps available
WoL players will not be able to play maps that utilize HotS dependencies. The maps just won't show up for them.
You publish one version of your map. If it uses HotS assets, only HotS players can see it. Otherwise, everybody can play. You will not need to publish your map twice (although if you wanted to create two separate versions, one with HotS assets and one without, you could do that). That means your map shares popularity between the games, it's not seperate. A WoL-only map could potentially remain just as popular and played as a HotS map.
You may not use HotS dependencies in your own map if you don't own a HotS license yourself
You may not use HotS assets inside a custom-made mod. Although it may technically be possible, it is against the ToS and your map, and possibly your account, will likely be banned
Full Quote: "As a caveat to this user-generated mod flexibility, know that attempting to bypass our license restrictions by importing HotS assets into your custom mods will be policed and considered actionable violations of our Terms of Use. "
Wow, this is very useful information. I guess it's only necessary to make a map a HOTS map if you plan to use specific assets, otherwise it sounds better to keep things WoL so that it's open up to a bigger group of players.
This actually impacts my decision to get HOTS. I think I'll actually hold off getting the game if I can just grab it on sale later on.
I've been scouting, and the best buy I've found online is Amazon UK, going for 26 Euros. I think it's a digital version, not too sure. And it could be a pre-purchase promo. This is about 5 USD off the price of the blizzard stores digital download. (12.5% discount) Sadly, I ain't got no paypal nor credit card, So I won't be able to leverage.
The temptation to get HotS just for the new assets and campaign story is immense. Gee, I'm such a sucker for these things.
And I am the one that preordered HotS in January and while being from the first to get the game, I won't have what to play the game with haha.. because my laptop is for a change. Anyway I am probably buying a new laptop the same week, sadly only with 2GB video but I hope it is good enough to play HotS on ultra settings.. (nvidia geforce 675m) and will be on SSD drive. And Windows 8 better be nice. - If anyone can confirm they can run the game fine, I will ask on Tuesday how it goes.
Now, I know that HotS beta used mixed dependencies cause it was built from WoL beta so you could see both.
Does anybody know... are we gonna be able to use WoL and HotS dependencies for a HotS map? Soon I will go 100% HotS, my maps: will they be upgradeable to HotS?
Right now maps use WoL Dependencies, in HotS beta you couldn't combine liberty and HotS dependencies, also my maps use custom Mod, so how will this go for HotS?
@Eimtr: Go All maps can be 'upgraded' to HoTS by simply adding a HoTS dependency, but after that only HoTS players will find your map on battlenet. WoL maps can be played by both WoL and HoTS players. AS I've read from Blizzard, and I hope they kept their word, HoTS campaign dependency will include everything from WoL so you won't need both. If thats not the case I beliebe it will be possible to use both.
They took the time to say you can't combine multiplayer and campaign dependencies, but didn't say a thing about mixing WoL and HoTS, so I guess there is no problem with that.
I guess it's not worth it for me to use a few HotS assets for my map then - unless there are some reeeealy cool ones ;). I rather keep the map available for the poor people who doesn't have HotS preordered :p
EDIT: by the way, during the beta I tried to add the HotS dependecies to my map, but the editor froze up, and I had to close it after it stood there for about 10 minutes. Never got it to work, so either I screwed up somehow, or it is not that simple to add dependencies to a current map.
for SC2BW i extracted alot of the models/textures/sounds from the campaign assets mods and put them in my own mod files. this was to reduce the load times of the mod, technically im distributing assets but yea i really dont want to have to load everything and clutter my editor with story units and all that.
biggest issue i see is im not using the hots dependencies either so technically my mod will be WoL but i've extracted models from HotS to use in the mod arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
what do.
guess i have to add the basic swarm dependency and force hots so i dont get banned, i dunno.
Will the basic swarm dependencie cause that much more loading time? Isn't it a matter of seconds? If so, it would be an easy way to prevent WoL users from getting the swarm stuff, hence, you can not be banned!
Btw, how do you extract content from dependencies?
I know I used a program for that a long time ago but I have forgotten T_T

im not really sure what this means, does it mean of you publish a hots version and a wol version, their pupolarity will add up? or will they kind of compete against each other?

Okay let's say I have a WoL map with Liberty Mod and Liberty Multi, then I added Custom Mod that includes:
- Liberty (Mod)
- Liberty Multi
- Liberty Campaign
- Liberty Storymode
So as of this case, how can I proceed to have ALL WoL Campaign and Storymode, All HotS Campaign and Storymode
Also when creating a new Mod, cause in the future I will use a clean mod, which ones should it include to have: Latest Patch Melee changes, All Melee Units, All Campaign and Storymode units from Both WOL and Hots? Which ones should be selected?

Without ovewriting or causing corruption of data?
I just clicked on "Yes" and it seems to work fine. However, there is a weird bug for me that seems to make the sound less.... powerfull when I run the map that has all the dependencies. However, I dont think its because of that, seeing how the entire SC2 sound is less powerfull when I run the map, not only map sounds itself.
Unless you want to do a melee map. You should only pick the Campaign dependencies most of the time. Otherwise expect blizzard to break your map and more.

Just thought I'd share.

It's good that they had the foresight. Faith in Blizzard partially restored after the D3 Disaster.

I don't like the idea of having two entries of my map in a public. It causes my map to compete against itself.
What's great is that you don't have to. Just publish it once and use only WoL Dependencies. It's one unified server.
@zeldarules28: Go
Too bad it does not really help once I decide to update my map with a new stuff. I'm already looking forward to add Tempest and more to my map. :)

What about MOD files created in WoL? How can they be ported over to HoTS?
this is troubling.

Without having to open the registry, is there a new-quicker way to publish maps to different regions?
@tacticmove: Go
