Update: Blizzard has released a preview of the patch notes for their next major patch, 1.1. In this patch is fixes for GalaxyEdit and some changes to how the Custom Games system currently works. Read the full set on their blog.

We've just added a new poll: What are you thoughts on the Marketplace. Note that they said in April that this was planned for about one year after release. So don't expect it to be really soon :)

Another Custom Live is going to happen tomorrow starting at 6 PM Paris time. If you have some cool maps you want them to play, please give it to them!

    Mario - Sprites by DrHu

rrowland sprite demo gave some inspiration to DrHu. He made a demo of a mario map using this technique. This looks really nice :)

The Last Marine - Trailer by Refraction Entertainment

The Last Marine will be a 8-player horror map and a trailer is already available. It shows some really nice use of the lightning abilities of Starcraft 2.

    Battle.net - Starcraft 2 Editor Questions

There's a new sticky on the Battle.net Map Development forum called Starcraft 2 Editor Questions. I really don't understand what they are trying to do there. I mean having a single sticky thread for questions when there are like 500 posts on the mapster map development forum a day ... If you have ideas!

    Quote:

Calling all veteran and aspiring map developers! Do you have any questions regarding the creation of player-made maps or usability of the StarCraft II Editor? If so, we encourage you to post your inquiries in this thread.

As this discussion is only intended for questions related to the StarCraft II Editor and map creation process, for general feedback regarding the custom map system, we ask that you please continue to post here: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/248107291

    Thank you!

    Quote:

Hey everyone, we've been seeing some great questions in here and we do want to try to answer more of these for you as soon as we can. We want to make sure that we're providing you answers to your questions here as well as putting together a more comprehensive guide for using the new editor. These things take time though, so we won't be able to provide immediate answers, but we'll be doing what we can.

We'd like to thank those that have taken the time to participate in the thread and would like to encourage others to take part as well. Your input and questions will help us to better shape our responses and available information.

Please remember, feedback about the editor itself or bugs should go in the feedback thread also stickied in this forum. This thread should focus on asking questions about the use of the editor itself and how all the moving parts (or non-moving parts) work.

KR Battle.net Custom Maps Show Off

It looks like the Korean version of Battle.net is more active than the others. They already have made two blog posts about the custom maps.

As a side note, Blizzard is organizing a Starcraft 2 Tournament with $40 000 cash prize. With the $10 000 Custom map contest, they have money to spend!

    Blizzcon Stream

If you can't attend to Blizzcon, you can watch it from your home using the Blizzcon stream. It costs 30 euros

    Quote:

Everyone who attends this year's BlizzCon or purchases the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket will receive an exclusive set of murlocalyptic in-game items for World of Warcraft and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

You'll also be able to display your tidal pride in StarCraft II with a Murloc Marine character portrait and a pair of deep-sea decals to emblazon on your units, each with a different terran, protoss, and zerg design.

I would like to thanks iMisu for setting up a ventrilo server that everyone in mapster can use. Come on and talk with fellow map makers :)

    Garden of Aiur Tournament

GardenOfAiur has been an active member making various great maps and artworks and in order to promote his blog he decided to launch a Starcraft 2 tournament. You may wonder why I news it, it's because he is going to make show off matches on custom games during the breaks. So if you want to participate and win up to $300, you know what to do :)

    Haunted Temple by Bounty_98

I newsed the map recently Haunted Temple. It was played in the latest Custom Live and was reviewed by DarkRevenantX. Bounty_98 took many of your feedbacks and improved the map accordingly. He releases a new video to show us the latest version :)

    FPS Engine by BacklitAvenger

Making a FPS takes a good amount of time and basically it's always the same thing. You have to make a WASD movement system and a traceline. Instead of doing it from scratch all over again, BacklitAvenger released a FPS engine free to use :) Your feedback is welcome!

    Legends by Cedergren Productions

Blizzard games are not only great games but inspiring people to make great things. All your work on Starcraft 2 is really awesome and I want to feature today a World of Warcraft related work. It's a one hour machinima called Legends by Cedergren Productions. And, this is only the first of a serie! If you have the time, please watch it :)

Just wanted to let everyone know, our lovely new staffies have put up stickies in the Map Development forums for now, to make things run a little smoother. I'd recommend reading both the Guidelines for Asking Questions and Getting Answers and the Map Development Forum Rules before posting (or continuing to post)!

    Fringe RPG by Nashadun

Fringe is a coop RPG map recently released on EU servers. It is designed to put a focus on action, avoiding much of the tediousness of RPGs. Fringe takes place at the start of the Second Great War, on a fringe world under attack by the Zerg. With the Dominion retreating back to the core worlds, the only chance of survival a group of six soldiers have is to find a ship and leave the planet before it is fully engulfed by the Zerg.

    Haunted Temple Review by DarkRevenantX

Yet another great review by DRX as part of his Central Review Conglomerate. Thus far, the Haunted Temple has received the highest score: Silver! Be sure to check the thread as he goes in depth within his review and gives ratings to different parts of the map.

    Another Mapster Intro by Otixa

Otixa decided he wanted to take his hand at making a better intro cinematic for SC2Mapster. In fact, his is the only one currently that relates/ties into our new Halloween colored theme, so yay for him! Feel free to help promote SC2Mapster with the other various Mapster assets you can use, found here.

    Mapster Ventrilo/TeamSpeak by Taz

This had been brought up once before and the general response was, "i'm too busy making my map to talk." However, i'm putting it here in the news so we can get everyone's opinion on the matter, so please go leave some feedback! After all, we're here for you, so if you thinking making a Ventrilo/TeamSpeak server would help the community as a whole, consider it done.

Guide to Galaxy Scripting Tutorial by AzothHyjal

The purpose of this guide is to acclimate people with the Galaxy language and custom scripting in Starcraft II. This guide is not intended as reference and as such will build up from simple to more complicated concepts. The beginning parts of this guide are aimed at beginners to programming. Later portions will assume that you understand the earlier material and do less hand holding.

Azoth did a really great job with this Scripting Tutorial. scripting is becoming more and more popular, and in the near future will become somewhat common.

    Blender M3 Plugin by stante

This one's pretty self explanatory. Stante is doing a great job with his new M3 Plugin for Blender. It does exactly what NiNToxicated's tool did for 3DS Max, except his is for Blender!

    War of Finality by Tyrannical

This map is made up of 3 Teams. Teams 1 and 2 consist of 1 Builder and 2 Heroes. Team 3 consists of 3 Computers: Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. The goal for Teams 1 and 2 is to destroy the other team's builder, while the job of the heroes is to defend the builder from the initial computer attacks and capture the control points. The job of the Builder is to build up an army strong enough to support your heroes as they destroy the other player controlled side.

Important Update The first action from Blizzard since the release of the game towards the map popularity issues is to make featured maps. We don't know anything yet about how many maps will be featured, for how long ... But it's live!

Even if you've got some experience creating custom maps, you'll want to kick your efforts into overdrive for this one, because the stakes are high.

    THE Card Game Tournament

This is the first time I organize a tournament and I'm really happy as it went really well. I would like to thanks TinMan for the streaming, he was the only one from europe that accepted to stream and I found him 3 hours before the start of the event. There were technical difficulties but there will be gone for the next tournament :) Thanks to the 20 teams who participated (40 people!), I really hope you enjoyed it.

    Here's the final score:

    • First: Smeargle STFU (Forsen.298, Hjälten.780)
    • Second: Losers of Life (Antiga.940, fietstas.277)

    • Third: Team MerryMakers (Phaaze.598, enraze.406)
    • Third: The Crabs (Horrorplant.727, tedde93.205)

If you were'nt there, you can hear me and my super sexy french accent :) commenting the show off match between me and Clord, the map maker, versus the winners!

    Puzzle TD by gemGreg

While validating the maps I found out Puzzle TD. This is the first time I see a TD on a terrain that is not all square. Also there's a fun concept, your worker can also deposit mineral, and you have to build probes to gather minerals. This is interesting. It's currently in Alpha but I like the ideas :)

    Interface Contest

Yes, this was supposed to be over today... I have the feeling a lot of you are hesitant to participate because of a simply amazing submission early on. Don't be scared! Go for it! Keep in mind, these contests are for fun and to help create things people have never done before on GalaxyEdit. We want to extend the current knowledge we have! With that in mind, i'm going to extend the contest for a short time. For now, the extension will be one day. We will update the newspost with more information in a few hours.

Weekly Terraining Exercise #2: To be king you don't need a castle by Mozared

This week, the theme will be "To be king you don't need a castle" (cookie for the reference). What does this mean, you ask? Well, it means you're supposed to make the house, camp, spawning place or what-have-you of the leader/boss of a faction. This can be a home of a mining operations' overseer, the 'home' of an embedded Zerg cerebrate or the temple of a highly-ranked Protoss templar. Or even Mengsk's palace, if you feel so inclined. Go wild, I'd love to see what you make of this. Here's a few entries thus far, there's quite a few more, and the exercise has just started! Stay tuned for a future update on the exercise.

Character / Hero Selection Tutorial by Shinoogie12

This is an awesome tutorial about creating a hero/character selection dialog... Think Super Smash Bros or an RPG where you want to choose a character to play in-game. Not much else to say about it, other than check it out!!

    Corpses by Bibendus

This is an horror map designed to make you scream and run in fear :P You must control your hero and survive longer as possible against the incoming waves of zombies. The idea is taken from Call of Duty Nazi Zombies mod.

    Inappropriate Content Policies

    Chat Rooms by Kanaru

As you know, there aren't any chat rooms available in Battle.net. Instead Blizzard gave us maps. Kanaru had the nice idea of making a chat room map so people have a place to talk anyway :) This is less than idea, but it's a start!

    SC2Replayed

    SC2Replayed Logo

Together with Sixen we have been working hard on mapster for the last several months to create a mapping community. Our co-workers at Curse on their side spent their time developping a new website: sc2replayed.com.

We've spent a hard time working on the search function so you are able to browse the thousands of replays available and find those you really want to see. It has been a complex task but I think it is fairly good right now.

Also, we have figured out the replay format and are able to extract meaningful data from it. As we wanted to release the website for Starcraft 2 launch, we only have basic things like the build order. However we are planning to add more interesting stuff and even let you download a readable version of the replays so the theorycrafters you are can get factual data.

Finally we added some statistics for fun and forums :)

I really hope you will like this website as we put a lot of efforts in making it user friendly. You can add some of your replays and see from yourself!

    Third Person Shooter by iWaNN

I would like to news this work made by iWaNN as it is a complete non-intrusive library to do Third Person Shooter for your map. You just have to put the few triggers in there and your pretty much done. Also, a great thing is that you are still in control of your unit and can cast spells, have the UI ... You should check it out :)

    Interface Contest

If you come to mapster often you have probably noticed all the different maps with custom UI. It's time to make it a contest ! You have to make a custom interface element. It can be anything you want including action bars, player frame, menu panel ...

    • You are allowed to use both dialogs and .SC2Layout modifications
    • You must not re-use previous work (please be honest :) )
    • You can submit as many entries as wanted as long as they are all differents.

You have 8 days to complete this contest. You have to provide a video and the associated map.

    Reward

The main goal of the contest is to further community development within GalaxyEdit. The rewards can be see as follows:

    • First: 1-year Curse Premium
    • Second: 6-month Curse Premium
    • Third: 3-month Curse Premium
    • Everyone else: 1-month Curse Premium

    Blizz Blues

There have been somewhat interesting blue posts on Battle.net forums.

    Quote:

Has anyone heard the word on Blizzard Custom maps?

We have more information planned to share on the creating custom maps and will adding new maps of our own to the system over time. (I can't answer as to when.)

As we release information, we'll be sure to highlight it on the front blog and as always, we're keeping an eye out for any great community created guides or helpful hints that we can highlight and share with the community as well. We're also going to be keeping an eye out for great community created maps; and much like we've been doing with the Reconnaissance Report, we're hoping to highlight those maps in on the blog as well.

Idea: Why not let the community decide what maps it likes?

That's our intent. We'll be looking for recommendations of maps that the community is enjoying and look into potentially highlighting them in a post on the community site. We'll let everyone know further details on how we would like submissions sent our way etc. We'll also be taking a close look at those maps before we point them out, but we know that we have some amazing and creative community members that we're looking forward to seeing more of.

    Campaign Models Listing by Zarakk

You've probably played the campaign and saw the high-poly models. Did you know that all those scenes are maps done within the editor? And you can even use the models! They are probably too heavy for Battle.net but could be useful for cinematics. You can get a listing of all those done by Zarakk.

    Voice Great Destroyer by IskatuMesk

I've seen many people working on maps, models, artwork but that's the first time I see someone making voices. IskatuMesk is giving us a preview of the voices of his main character: The Great Destroyer. It is really well done, I couldn't say that it was made by a fan!

    Cardcraft SC by BeLugh

I am going to promote your maps that are released on Battle.net and we start with Cardcraft by BeLugh. It's a game that let you play cards with a real time fight associated. It's a pretty cool concept and even playable with AI if you can't find anyone due to the popularity system :)

    Islands at War by depthsofchaos

Another map available on EU. This is a really cool concept, you create buildings on islands and try to control the whole map. It also features an automatic border detection which is pretty nice.

    Tutorials Part 1/2

During the few weeks of the beta, a lot of tutorials have been written by you! They cover a wide range of things from introduction to the editor to advanced stuff. Since I want to show off your awesome work, I am going to post in two days all the tutorials. I'm sure it will help a lot of people! Keep up the great job!

    • Update: Online Planetary Boss video has changed: it's now a multiplayer footage!
    • Update: The minigame thread is now working. Sorry ...

Many of you have experienced issues with the dependencies (1, 2, 3, 4). These will be fixed in the next content patch (I have no ETA though). Also, Blizzard is aware of our huge concerns about the publishing system, let's just hope changes will be made soon!

While playing custom maps on Battle.net, I have seen many of you add "sc2mapster" either in the map description or loading screen. I would really like to thank you for doing that :)

    Planetary Boss by Bounty

If you have been following mapster, you have probably heard of this map. Today Bounty is releasing a multiplayer version on Battle.net called "Planetary Boss - Valdar the Vindicator"! You can play it on the NA servers and contact him: Bounty.820. Have fun :)

Diablo - The Curse of Tristram by egodbout

The Diablo remake by egodbout keeps growing. The new video features Weapons, Potion Bar, Party Screen, Character Stats, Alt Item/Show/Pickup. As a side note, there's a Diablo model as an easter egg in the campaign. It will probably be of great use for all of your maps :)

    Minigame Vote

The Minigame Contest is now closed. There have been 30 entries so that will be 3 votes with 10 maps each. Each vote will lasts 3 days. There will be no final round :)

    >> Vote Now! <<

There are entries missing either videos / maps. You have 3 days to find people to help you out making the video/upload the map or unfortunatly you won't enter the contest :(

    Missing Map

    Missing Video

Since many of you are new to mapster, you probably don't know about the contests. They are organised to feature some interesting aspects of the Galaxy Editor. To get an idea, here is the listing of all the contests and their respective winners!

    Wallpaper Contest

    Spell Contest

EDIT: There was a bug with the IRC Channel Flags last night so only registered users could join the channel. It's all fixed now, the channel is open to anyone and everyone.

Beta ends tomorrow! (19th July). This second phase has been really bad for the mappers. Many of the maps broke in some way or another, the popularity boost has been removed but the system hasn't changed, Europe did not get custom map publishing and leaderboards textures are messed up.

Let's hope Blizzard will make a smoother release and give more attentions to the custom maps.

    Wild Aiurfrica by 38dedo

I've seen many many maps since I first played Wacraft 3 custom games and I have to say, this one is really a total new concept. Instead of controlling a hero or lead an army, you are in the skin of an animal in Africa. This is an incredible concept! You have to balance your hunger, thirst and rest with some nice mechanisms. For example in order to eat you have to stealth next to some buzards and "capture" one.

    Animated Textures by Corbo

Starcraft 2 supports videos as textures. The Exporter Plugin now handles them great and you can see the result in this short video made by Corbo.

    Voting Library by ArcadeRenegade

You probably want to use a voting system in your map to choose the difficulty, to kick someone ... ArcadeRenegade made a nice library that allows you to do just that in a few lines of code. This is pretty handy and supports synchronisation!

EDIT2: Patch 18 has gone live for US, not for EU just yet. No patch notes or anything of the sort yet. Any Undocumented Editor Changes can be found here.
EDIT: Blizzard has also released an FAQ regarding common Real ID questions that have been popping up since it's inception. We recommend checking out it, as it's a rather informative read. Click here for the thread.

Rocket Arena Deluxe - RAD by Acemore

You have probably seen the first Rocket Arena Deluxe Dev Diary, Acemore has been doing some great work since then. The map is now playable on Battle.net and this is really so much fun. He added new power-ups like shields and invisibility, and is looking for your inputs (in comments) for new ones!

Since the map is really good and fun, I invite you to play it on Battle.net. And here is the deal: if the map goes to page 1 (it's around page 3 atm) I will promote your Battle.net maps at a faster pace (like 2 maps a week or something).

Play it on Battle.net! The game name is RAD

    Psyborg by ProzaicMuze

ProzaicMuze missed the Creature Contest deadline. So he decided to release a video of his creature anyway: the Psyborg. This is really amazing the combination of so many parts which ends up looking extremly great. If you want to know how he did the little missiles you should check out his new tutorial: Customized Projectiles.

    Starship Troopers Arachnid by kinkycactus

For his first model, kinkycactus decided to do the Starship Trooper Arachnid. This is really well done with all the required animations: Stand, Walk, (Un)burrow and Attack. He used the M3 Exporter plugin if you wonder how he added it in Starcraft 2. I hope to see more models made by you in the future :)
