Hey guys. I recently downloaded the WoW free 10 day trial so I could use the models in sc2 :D But it occurred to me it might be fun to actually play WoW, too. Anybody here who plays it or has played it have any advice? Is it fun, not fun, do you need friends for it to be fun, etc.. I'm thinking about getting the 20 dollar standard edition of WoW (just plain WoW before any of the expansions). But how limiting is that? Like would I, at a low level, even notice not being able to do things? I know Northrend and the outland would be off-limits, but they're higher level areas anyway. And I could always upgrade if I decide to do so. But would I have to buy Buring Crusade, Wrath of Lich king, and Cataclysm or could I just buy Cataclysm and get everything with that?
Also, is the 15 bucks a month worth it? Would you guys pay by 6 months at a time or what? Just trying to get some info :D
btw- I don't have any friends who play WoW, so that may be important (or not).
Don't do it! Wait for some of the new MMO's coming out. I have come to the realization that MMO's are no good when everyone else is ahead. It's better to start out in a brand new MMO than anything imo.
It's still the best MMO and it's fun if you want a casual skinner-box gameplay in your life. It will probably be hard to stick with it without friends in the game, but it's still enjoyable to level up for a while and murder murlocs. The end game is really take it, or leave it immediately when you reach max level.
Actually I am just surprised that there is a Blizzard nerd who hasn't played WoW yet.
Well actually I played on a private server a long time ago, got up to level 80 (although it was a sped up process, faster than the normal blizzard version). But it was glitchy and therefore not exactly enjoyable. Its just that 20 bucks is a very low cost for the game. Its the monthly fee that I hate >.<

Don't get WoW, its addictive as hell, the only way I keep off of it is by:
1. Stop paying the monthly fee (And fighting the urge to buy another month)
2. Playing SC2
But if you do, I got to 85 on 4 characters and know the game like the back of my hand. I started a while after cata release too :P (Or at least I started playing again after a long time of off time when Lich King dungeons and raids were released)
And yes, the game is fun, just dont do it. The whole time I have been contradicting myself.
The only reason I find it addicting is because if you dont play, your wasting your money and if you do, your wasting your money. >.< You dont win.
Cataclysm updated all the 1-60 zones and you can play them with just basic WoW. Those zones are now better than outland and northrend, and you would have to play at least two characters (alliance and horde) to see them all.
You wouldn't be able to play the new cataclysm races, and their starting zones are really fun.
You have to buy ALL the expansions to play cataclysm, can't skip them (there are deals where you can buy them all in a package, which is cheaper, but nothing close to 20$)
Running dungeons and raids with groups is the most fun part of WoW. There are no raids in 1-60, but there's lots of dungeons and many of them got a nice rework with cataclysm (Deadmines!)
Don't listen to the haters about WoW sucking, dying, etc. It's not.
I played irregularly (2-6 month breaks) since burning crusade, paid with 2-month prepaid cards, enjoyed it immensely and never got "addicted".
Your intuition with that final thought was pretty spot-on: Playing WoW alone is a monumental waste of time. The only fun I got from WoW by myself was the PvP, mostly vanilla Alterac Valley (an epic 40v40 PvP battleground).
Most of the quests are a total bore and the UI has been completely dumbed down over the years that every quest objective is now pinpointed on the minimap. You're going to feel like you're looking at maps of the world more than the world itself. And you're gonna run into some temperamental people while doing it.
All trace of seriousness in this goofy-ass land of Azeroth flew out the window long ago. Prepare for internet memes and pop culture references in your travels, if you can be bothered to read why you're collecting the latest batch of bear claws. The monsters and all of PvE are not challenging, especially in the beginning...and on top of it everything was made noticeably easier since launch.
I only ever raided as far as Molten Core in vanilla but it sucked as you may have guessed. Monsters stand around picking their noses as you very slowly pull them piecemeal. The players are equally zombified, not batting an eye about everything being completely artificial and inexplicable. Don't expect any swashbuckling adventures is what I'm reaching here.
If you've never played it before and you feel like it could be interesting, then I think you're in for a treat if you try it. The level 1-60 content you'd have access to is very good now that they've remade most of it with the Cataclysm. Not having friends who play it shouldn't be too much of a limitation, you could easily join a leveling guild and find people to play with there.
Personally, I would recommend playing Rift instead of WoW. The company is less greedy (1 account = play on EU and US servers, free character transfers soon), soul system is really great, graphics are better, and overall I think Rift is a lot better than WoW is. I can set you up with a free trial for Rift if you want.
I've played WoW at the highest level. Thereby beeing rank Top 5 on both PvE and PvP part, EU/Worldwide.
Took about 18-20hours a day for months too get to this level of playing.
I never understood how people could be 'casual' and play 1-3 hours a day though. Gotta admit I respect those types !
My opinion : The game is and was great. But you missed the best parts. Ever since Vanilla it all went downhill making it way more casual and way too easy.
I've played WoW for a very long time, since TBC, played all classes and if I compare what it is now with what it used to be, there have been many improvements but the main thing of the game, which is playing together with social people.. has been made much harder. Some things have definetely changed for the worse, which is mostly caused by players, but also stimulated by the design changes they have made. Playing WoW for the first time is definetely fun but once you get to max level and want to do anything at all you WILL come across alot of annoying people.
The game has been made much more accessible for new players, but lost its challenge completely pre-max level because of that and even max level is boring now. There used to be alot of options while levelling which were more aimed at hardcore players, challenging things. This is what I personally prefer, others might not. It depends what you are after, the game becomes a grind and you will get 'reset' all the time with patches and expansions. I quit for the reason that the server I was on didn't feel like a community anymore, it basically turned into 'gearscore or begone'. I wouldn't recommend WoW now, the MMO project blizzard is working on is Titan will be better (no name set yet) and it will probably be announced within 1 year perhaps a little longer. I'd wait for that, I personally am done with the whole MMO things, they waste your time, force you to grind. Once you get what you want you will already need to grind for new things. It works for their money, but it has burned me off the game.
WoW is nothing if you're alone. Really.
I play WoW, but if my current guildies and my real-life mate I play with quit, I would quit in a heartbeat. The social aspect of MMOs is what keeps the game alive, and some of the most amazing people I've ever met are on WoW. If they weren't there, neither would I. So if you plan to start playing WoW alone, at least make plans to find a nice guild filled with nice folk, or get a friend to start playing with you :)
Tolkfan summed it up pretty well. It depends on what you're expecting from it. It's a blast right now leveling up to the max level, instead of the grind you will find in most MMORPGs. The storyline and everything you go through is just so much fun that you'll enjoy yourself playing through it, working and exploring your character along the way. You can basically consider 1-85 a single-player RPG similar to Baldur's Gate, Nox, Morrowind, and that kind of jazz.
Past that, at max level, is where the game changes completely. You've got three options:
A) PvP. WoW handles PvP incredibly well and it can be a lot of fun, but I'm going to go right ahead and say that you shouldn't pick WoW up for the PvP. If you want pure PvP and challenging content, get Bloodline Champions or some kind of arena game in that style. The problem with WoW PvP, aside from it being somewhat luck-based, is the fact that gear ruins so much. I did quite some PvP in my time on my rogue, and lost a lot of games I technically should've won because I was outgeared. Sure, I lost a lot of games because I did something wrong, too, but we had some games where I had a perfect CC streak on person A while both me and my partner unloaded on person B - except that person B wouldn't die because I simply did fuck all damage in my welfare epics and blues. I geared up completely twice (once in beta, once in WOTLK), but I never found the hassle of doing so to be really worth it, especially not now that I know that games like Bloodline Champions are out and about.
B) PvE. WoW handles PvE incredibly well these days, with interesting and challenging encounters - mastering them is generally quite a feat. As someone who has done raiding since vanilla, I think I can safely say that encounter-wise, you'll never grow bored of WoW raids. The main problem right now is the fact that you need to rely on others to get raiding done. I've literally seen it all - 10 man real-life friend raiding groups, hardcore server-first raiders and the zerg-style-guilds that rely on taking in over 9000 members and randomly take people to raids. The fact of the matter is, that the balance between accomplishment and friendship with guildies is always incredibly hard to even out. The more serious you get about raiding, the less you'll notice your guildies care about you. If you quit playing, none of them will give a shit. The less serious you get about raiding, the more awesome your cozy 10-man guild will be, but the less stuff you'll get down. To do raiding well in WoW you generally need to be able to cope with A) complete slack, and not care about progress or B) people who don't give a rat's ass about you as long as you don't stand in the fire.
C) RP. The WoW RP community is incredibly niche, but it's there. If you like the Warcraft lore specifically, go for it. If you like RP but aren't a huge fan of Warcraft lore, pick up LOTRO instead - it's got a lot more RP potential.
In the end, like I mentioned earlier, it depends on what you want from the game, and the realization that 1-85 should be seen as a completely different game to endgame PvP and PvE. It's a thrilling right regardless, but it might not be worth your money - the sad thing being that you won't find this out until you've spend a couple of hundred bucks on it already.
as zarakk said its good to have friends do it aswell because you can also find jerks and its fun doing it with real life people. i never got to end game and see no point to just farming for more gear and pvp. i mostly played which was by myself in the questing of the game. someone said that you wont see all the new stuff with only 1 from each race which isnt true. most people dont explore which i feel is pretty fun.
the game i feel was addictive but i did quit easy though.
i would play again if i had 100hrs to spare and the money to afford to waste on it, but it does get kinda lonely when your introverted and none of your real life friends play, and everyone can be a arse sometimes too noobs.
also ye the price for the complete pack of them is around 70 i think

I will be buying D3 for sure :D I've had my name in the D3 beta hat for like a year. Can't wait till they start.
Of course, theres always Blizzards 'project Titan'

There's a Blizard special offer that gives you original WoW + 30 days of play, just in case you didn't know. Look at the official page :P.
