I remember there one for a Diablo map in the past, which got removed or canceled. So now there is one for Mineralz and he's asking for $18.000 and you can back up to $10.000. Still don't know if kickstarting a sc2 map is allowed, wouldn't think so actually. But then again, the pledges aren't for a map, only for a mousepad or more.
This, quite frankly, seems like bullshit to me. If they were going for some sort of total conversion map, then that amount of money might make sense, but given how they are just developing these using primarily pre-made Blizzard assets, this just seems greedy.
I wonder what would happen if blizzard found out about this. On the other hand Who would give 10000 to a starcraft 2 map. Maybe he's hoping some rich kid likes his map.
I simply don't enjoy the game enough to donate. There's a whole lot of sitting there watching your money go up and not a whole lot of actually enjoying the game, so meh.
I have talked with wade about this a few times. He does state in the write up that the game is for sc2; and that the money goes to pay the people editing the map. No one is purchasing any blizzard assets, therefore blizzard cannot legally interact.

With that said, I am not opposed to anyone donating to the cause. Anyone investing money should take the time to read the write up. If they want to donate money, that is their choice.
I can see Blizzard trying to stop this but if they don't feel like it then I'm fine with this. Would I pay for a kickstarter for a SC2 map? Only if it were likely to be amazing. MineralZ didn't impress me. I am sure he is a decent editor but I wouldn't value a MineralZ sequel to be worth 18,000 dollars. It's not my opinion that matters though, if the community wants to give it $18,000 then by all means let him go through with it (as long as Blizzard is ok with it). For people that want to rely on a more full-time approach to SC2 map editing I feel people will need to rely on the Blizzard Map Market in the future if it ever comes out.
Minerals was developed definitely not by the creator of Squad TD. It's just Vindicator joined both maps' teams as UI guy, and now uses this fact to make an impression of experienced and relyable mapper that involved in cool maps development.
Thing is. You can have a big playerbase but that does not mean that even one percent of those players is going to even help by past playing the map when it comes to money at least.

I feel the reason the kickstarter isn't doing well is because most people don't see a game like Mineralz being worth more than what it already is, a free game on the SC2 Arcade. Also I am sure most of his player base doesn't even know his kickstarter exists. As for Map making only being feasible as a hobby? I'll wait until the Map Marketplace to make a firm answer, but yes it is very likely that a large majority (perhaps even all) of dedicated map makers will never be able to make a career out of it.
@grenegg: Go It does seem like that, the pledge rewards aren't interesting since he can't offer the game. $25 for a mouse pad, $50 and you also get a t-shirt, which is limited, with $75 you get nothing more, $150 and you also get a hoodie. If you're outside the US you'll to pay an additional $12, $20 or $25, which(imo) basically not worth it. $18.000 is just stupidly high for just a map. Compared to these kickstarters(Pandora,Terrashift) this one is just a joke. He also hasn't done any advertising whatsoever besides linking it on the arcade.

We're not asking for funding to pay us for the work that's already gone into the game, we're asking for money so we can take it above and beyond where it is now.

We should talk about that. I had originally planned to do an UI for it but then I got sucked into grad-school and left it with Swentz who was incompetent and broke too much stuff. That means I had to rollback to the last version I created (August 2012). I've now updated it to a more stable and balanced gameplay but lost some of the work you did because I didn't have any of the versions for the past 5 months or so. Shoot me an email or add me on Skype (celoisxar) if you're interested in getting it back in as I've had no way of contacting you.

The principe of kickstarter is that everybody gives a little money, but all added it can fund the project. Already 16 persons gave 769$.

This kichstarter just seems generally unrealistic. $18k? Even if they spend 1000 manhours on its that's still $18 an hour
