The English monarchy is a figurehead. They have no power, they are just there to look pretty and be in the news for getting married.
Yeah, I know, they're like mascots. They don't do anything at all, don't have any responsibilities and get to live in a palace just because they're "royalty" :S
we make money from tourism by advertising them (how much do you think the wedding made) and they are a check on the parliament, they do actually have the power to stop laws becoming laws but the last time they actually did that was a century ago i think

This is completely ignorant. They have a purpose. They have responsibilities. You could find these with just a few seconds of searching on the internet.

I'm not too sure about England, but here in Holland the queen actually has quite a lot of impact on what happens. She and her 'advisors' have so much impact that they are rarely ignored when a parliament is formed. It happens of course, but she's been called "the only man in the Dutch government" multiple times. That's not to say she decides everything that goes on, though.

Hey, I found it! It says they're a government sanctioned Paris Hilton. Royal party clowns that appear to make people feel better. Even parasites have a purpose.
By "responsibility" I meant stuff that they can't just abandon, like jobs. You know, working to support a family, pay taxes, payments on the house, car, kids education.
Their "responsibility" is to look pretty, award medals and lay flowers on monuments. And they can just say "screw it" and go back to their castle.
They're in afghanastan helping the U.S. How is that not a responsibility and not doing anything at all?
The Royal Family is out there, in their camo gear, trying to flush bin-laden out of his cave, eh? I guess they use the queen to disarm minefields, because what mine would dare explode under the damned Queen of England!
Haha, no, the royalty of England has NO power. AT ALL. Some other countries royalty can INFLUENCE the government, but still have no real direct control over anything.
But that is not the case in England. They do nothing. AT ALL.
Their only purpose to be there and be rich.
(Technically that isn't true, they are there to symbolize what as England's glorious past of monarchy, and almost be the true government's "advisors". There was some sort of agreement a while back when England first became a democracy. The monarchy would step down, only if they would have the role of advisors and still hole their titles. But the "advisor" role has almost entirely died out, although it does linger in some other countries)
I love how your a complete idiot in about every thread you create. So much so that I almost wish you would leave. My gosh.
Besides that I was referring to you saying England had no responsibility at all, which I mistook and thought you were referring to the Country as a whole not the Monarchy. ._.
they are the descendants of the ex most influential people in England. They themselves don't really have power but it is pretty much all for British traditions. Can you imagine the prince enlisting in the army and being a general in actual combat? I certainly can't. The only titles royalty holds are for symbolic and traditional purposes. Their opinions matter, just not so much as say, Obama.

If you're genuinely interested in why Britain has a royal family, and what purpose they serve for the country, I could happily explain.
However, your mind is obviously already made up and nothing would change your mind, so why are you posting here?
I wouldn't waste my time explaining the purpose of the royals to someone who already has their opinion set in stone.
I am sorry to hear that. I hope your country get rid of monarchy as soon as possible.
I didn't mean it like that, tbf. I'm not particularly fond of our royal house, but they have done a lot of good for the country as well. I don't like the idea of "nobles" in the 21st century any more than you do, but I'm just saying it's not all bad.
That said, play nice, people. Platonic discussions are the only ones worth having :D
Not trying to sound rude, dang internet does not convey emotions. I'm just pretty pissed that Tolkfan is acting like a complete idiot, I really don't want to act like good-two-shoes to him. U.U

Which is why I mentioned platonic discussions; why would you be pissed at Tolkfan for having an opinion? He doesn't really have any influence in your life, so why would you care? There's people out there who'd like to burn all gays if they could - are you pissed at them too? You must spend a lot of time being angry =P. Feel free to point out close-mindedness, but try to stay as objective as possible. While I'm usually a fan of uttering emotions, it tends to be the people flaming who have the problem. We can have discussions without calling anyone anything through viewing 'opinions' loose from their posters.
Enough philosophical crap now though, continue with the thread.

Most government activities are performed by parliament nowadays though.

I have to say, that is the most compelling argument I've heard :D Does it outweigh the cost of supporting their parasite lifestyle and castles?

For one thing, the Queen DOES have the power to dissolve parliament. So she does have some power, just as an fyi.
@iSaintx: Go
that means to stop it temporarily yes? Like to hold off on a meeting and stuff?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dissolve The only reason she wouldn't really dissolve it is because it would literally cause a Civil War, unless she has other ways of thinking. ;)

CONQUEST! RULE THE WORLD! ADOLF HITLER ALL OVER AGAIN!
@Reaper872: Go
lol'd. I'd actually be okay with that because I know the Queen is no where near like Hitler. :)
