Recently, a custom melee map has become popular on the NA servers called Team Monobattles. I really enjoyed the map a lot - it's 4v4 where each player can only make 1 type of unit - but it had some flaws. I felt like I could do better and it would be a nice small project, so over about two weeks I cranked out a playable alpha version called Hyper Team Monobattles with some new features, like new/campaign units, a new map, the ability to see your allies unit picks, better random functionality etc.
The problem is, I have no idea where to go from here. I don't know enough bnet people to even get a full 4v4 going, I have no idea where to promote the map. I know there's an audience, but I don't really know how I would go about informing people of this version. I haven't even really been able to play a full game from start to finish to test it, so I've kept it private.
How can I find players interested in playing something like this? Are there chat channels for people that like to play custom maps? What do I do with this map now that its playable?
Just, make the next one a little better, by the time you have 9 maps like me, if you keep making them better each time, eventually you will get something people love.... at least thats the theory.
Now you join in with the pessimist crew and start shouting how terrible bnet 0.2 is and how it's the popularity system's fault that your epic map gets no plays, or something.
Or you could just wait for a reset, try and get your map out there and try and find/make some friends online to play it with. Or wait for it to come up through Fun or Not.
1/be sure its playable = u need to test it . so you need to advertise it as a wip / state that it's a beta or something and that u wish to make it perfect
2/this IS a very popular type of map
so it will get played (lol to/for all those sc2mapster elitist pricks that show how much they are themselves wusses (say their maps are soooo awesome, yet...) that will never even try to confront the massses with their toy)
I love mono battles, the one that is at the top of the popularity list.
You are going to run into the same troubles I had with Phant3m, you can make a million times better map, with better features, more polishing etc. But the average Sc2 player is stupid, or perhaps rather than a lack of intelligence, is as lazy as all fuck. People will only play what is in front of them, what they can get a game going in about 30 seconds, otherwise they will leave the lobby.
My suggestion is don't waste your time working on Team Monobattles, because honestly, it is a map I am going to polish like a bitch after I finish Tofu, along with Phantom and a few other unique twists on the Melee Scene. All of these will be running off the same engine, so it will be extremely easy to drop and add rulesets like Monobattles to the maps.
Any noob can make a monobattles map, phantom map, etc. These are facts of life you are going to have to deal with when changing Melee Rulesets, as they are just that, Rulesets. The actual game - Starcraft - is already made by blizzard. If you want to have a popular map, you need to make a good map - then get people higher up involved in advertising your map. Otherwise, for Beta Testing your best bet is the IRC chatroom.
MonoBattles is better left for when Multiplayer Campaigns are allowed as what we have now is fine.
There's only one way to play your map, you need friends, a lot of them. No one is going to just play your map, whether you advertise it or not. You could get lucky though, sometimes a map will shoot to page 1 or 2 then you can play your map. There's no formula for having a page 1 map, it just happens sometimes.
So starting making friends online! THEN play your map.
Best way, in my opinion, to get a full group going, is to just start a thread in which you state when you'll be on and if people who want to help test could join a specific channel at that time. also go scout around the sc2 community forums, there are bound to be mapnights (sc2mapster has both on EU and NA a mapnight. but I don't know how well it goes on the NA server). Or a list/mention of a sc2 chat channel where people will be who might be available for map testing.
So basicly just open a thread on several community sites (like this one :) ) and post there something like:
Can anyone help me test my map, I'll be in the <Insert channel name here> channel on the <insert server here> server at <Insert time here> <insert timezone here>.
don't forget to explain what kind of map it is.
There are bound to be people who will be bored and are helpful enough to join ya. Also check out the IRC channels of the communities. since there are almost always people just lurking about there who can be asked to help test something.
Good luck with gathering a group of 8 to help ya. Sadly I can only play on EU servers so I can't help ya :(

Agreed, Doesn't matter how good your map is when its a copy of a page 2 map.
And I wouldn't say the average user is stupid, I would agree with them that I rather not wait to play a map that I could just play a different version on page two.
Maybe work on reading comprehension as much as you should written expression? My post was not a troll comment, nor was I pissed off. The OP is asking what to do with his map now that it has reached the stage to go public. Telling him to go make more maps is beyond a stupid response. He is not asking to learn nor said anything about wanting to. He needs answers on how to promote his product...
Maybe work on it yourself instead of giving other people sarcastic and useless comments.
i typed that you (among others) are trying to discourage someone honest and forthcoming (2 things you know nothing about apparently)
and that he should post on tl because the monobattle type of map will be welcomed there and he will get support and be able to test it and improve it...
but you knew that, you're just a poser posing :)
u always post versus and i'm sad to say i care enough to say it (care about others getting your tone and demeanor)
ohhh and i don't care about the whole deal
but i care about helping people (you should try it sometimes)
Just because you disagree with me doesn't mean I'm not helping. The OP wants to make his creation popular so going out and making a bunch more maps is not going to serve him well. Tell me again how my post was useless?
Thanks for the replies, but jesus this sure is a sensitive issue isn't it.
Also, for what it's worth this isn't a "just learning" map that I want to discard. I was more curious if there was some sort of bnet2 community that I could present the map to, or something.
MonoBattles is better left for when Multiplayer Campaigns are allowed as
what we have now is fine.
It really isn't. Protoss Nexuses accumulate energy during the pregame state, so they often start with a chronoboost worth of energy, the random unit function allows for unplayable unit combinations like warp prism or corruptors, there is no indicator to show what your allies have selected in the way of units, the map is notoriously unstable for some reason, dropping people randomly at the start of the game, the pregame unit timer is a whole minute and thirty, which is absurdly and irritatingly long, there's no timer to indicate there is a time limit so people can be easily frustrated, there's no feedback once you select a unit other than a vague "waiting" dialog. I also don't think it's a very good choice of map, since it features enormous ramps that reward early pool type strategies.
I mean, it's playable, but it's really not a very good iteration of the concept.
I said what we have now is fine - which means playable. Not good but playable.
Yes, people who make these maps are noobs, they have no common sense to spawn the melee units after the vote has passed, the way they do the vote is completely wrong.
Random unit function should not choose special units, warp prism, mothership, medivac etc.
Corrupters are fine because they are part of the game. Their timer, or lack thereof, is completely and utterly stupid.
These are things I have thought about mate, and why I wish myself to remake Monobattles, I could care less if anyone else plays it, but more to prove to myself that I am better than them. And obviously, if Tofu succeeds to the number one spot, I can always use that to boost popularity for other projects.
Ur really starting to piss me off dude. In every single post you make, you talk as if you are better than everyone else at everything. Stop being an arrogant ass hole. "Don't make it, because I am going to and mine is obviously going to be better." Pssh, are you kidding me?
If you want someone to sugar coat everything, bottle feed you than obviously I am not that person. I could care less about hurting your fragile ego, or your opinion of myself. Take a look at who I am and what my line of work is, and what that work requires.
I am a Corporate Image Consultant, it is my job to be the hardass who comes in and shakes things up if you want to succeed (and if it is required), it is my job to redesign companies from the ground up. Yes people will get pissed off at me no doubt, they will even hate me, but in the end for the majority of the time I am correct, because my job requires me to be. There are numerous people here who want to do map making for fun, for relaxation, I am one of them. The majority of my projects will never see the light of day because I do it for myself, that is fine.
But when he comes in here and say, why can't I get people to play my map, I tell him the truth. I do not care about his feelings because it is better he knows the truth than for you to lie to him like you would a child, out of telling him the truth I show him respect and that itself shows you a shitload about my character.
I gave him a suggestion, I did not say OMFG don't make it cause I am going to, I said it would be better if he created something other than Monobattles. It is the same as if he created a RoundRobin Spectator Map to compete with the 3-4 different types we already have, and he is wondering why he can't succeed where there is clearly already another Monobattles map on Page 2 that the majority of the community is comfortable with playing.
The only thing left for him to do to "outshine" the other Monobattles is custom UI work for the loading screen+setup screens, as well as the above mentioned 'fixes'. As of this moment I am the only one who has proven his worth in Custom UI work, so I am at the top of the world because no one else has challenged me yet. Will I stay at the top forever? I hope the fuck not, I hope you guys can match me, out do me, become better than me. Because it would lift the whole community standard higher. But as it stands, because I am better than him in that regard, it is sound advice that I heeded. If you ask why I don't help him, it would because all the custom graphics would be mine, and a Monobattle map requires very little work, thus it would end up being my map with his name on it. Common Sense 101, that is stupid.
If you are too ignorant to even fully read a post and instead will continually take out of context a specific sentence in my whole post to prove your point valid, when it still remains invalid when applied into context, you will continually fail and look like a troll.

finished a map? whats that non-sense, i got about 20 unfinished maps waiting for minor fixes to be published
Anyone touting quantity over quality (directly or indirectly) should be ignored. You're going to get nowhere fast releasing a bunch of crap.
karassawa speaks the troll

or did blizz fix this?
