This week, I wanted to try a different theme based on an idea by Scbroodsc2: "Copypasta". What does this mean? It's relatively simple: first, you create a scene without doodads - use cliffs and textures to set yourself up. Next, you select this terrain, copy it and paste it in the same map (or in another if you're running out of space): this gives you three identical bases for creating a terrain. Last but not least, you try to create the scene you had in your mind three times, in the three different areas you pasted your landscape. It's alright to position doodads in the same or similar positions: the idea is to show people multiple ways of you working out a single scene over time, so you can decide which scene you like most and maybe learn from the decisions you've made.
It sounds difficult, but it's easier done than said. Good luck, and have fun people!
Create a landscape using only cliffs and textures, like this: (this represents a landscape made with only textures + cliffs)
[ A ]
Then, you select that landscape in the terrain pallet, and copy it. Then, paste the terrain, one area beside another, 3 times, like this:
[ A1 ] [ A2 ] [ A3 ]
After that, you add doodads to [ A1 ] to create a scene. After that, you proceed to do the same for [ A2 ] and [ A3 ], and making the same scene as you wanted to create in [ A1 ]. Now, you should have the same scene 3 times, but each with slightly different doodad setups, like this:
[ A1a ] [ A1b ] [ A1c ]
I might add pictorial references later, but for now work with this.
Umm.. I don't understand the 3th picture. But the first and second are great. Just a sidenote, the 2nd picture could have some more work around the area, like the first and thirth picture, with lightning and smog dodoads.
However, this is inspiring... just, having a very little spot in the map and change its story...
The explanation for the third one: That's one of the smaller ventilation rooms. Inside is a biohazard canister with a deadly virus. What happened is the zerg burrowed into the station platform after the terrans thought they won. They locked the doors with tentacles and then released the virus, killing all terrans on the station (cause it's the vent room).
What are you... doing? You should literally be able to drag across the terrain, press control+C and press control+V in the editor out of the box without any kind of options required. Are you in the terrain palette? I'm not sure if copying water works, but cliffs, texture and height should all go automatically.
I originally made this terrain for a small sandbox map a couple weeks ago with doodad placement similar to the zerg version. New to this stuff but I was really happy with it, and this seemed like a fun challenge to re-envision some new stories for my little world.
Terran
A Terran mining operation is making great progress in securing rich minerals to carter back to the homeworld. A small battalion of troops have setup defensive positions at the choke should any hostile forces happen to come across them.
Zerg
A Zerg Queen leads a small troop of zerglings on a perimiter patrol of their world, ever vigilant in protecting what remains of their dying race.
Protoss
Strange energy signals from a long abandoned Protoss colony have led a small contingent back to a place that brings back forgotten memories. But what could be causing these structures to emanate once again with life?
I like your spin on it, to do all three races on the same slab of terrain :)
A little less crazy on the zerg cloud in the second picture, and add a skybox that makes sense and you would be set. Or extend the map and add a rocky volcanic backdrop to get rid of the black :)
I wasn't aware of the sky box feature.. seems a lot of them don't work, but I found one that suited the map well. It's positioning was a bit difficult, I had to get the camera really low in order to make the skybox hit the skyline.. I think it made the shots more personal though.
I also lessened the cloud per your advice, and I enlarged the mothership. :)
Pics added to original post with the originals left for comparison.
Some of them only work well looking down upon them, and some of them need the camera far clip increased in order to view them in the editor. You can increase the far clip by holding the Ctrl key down and scrolling the mouse scroll back, and you can decrease by scrolling it forward. That or you can go into view, Camera editor, and look at some of the cool things you can do with the camera :)
@Nurdguy: Go Nice, I like the snippets/backstories you made for them, especially the Protoss one!
@tatatatate: Go Cool, I like the progression of uninhabited forset -> major city, though I think the water could use some waves/current, looks kinda like a deep abyss to me (at least in the third pic).
Though I love all these submissions, they aren't really what I had in mind when I came up with the theme: my aim was to have people recreate a similar scene three times so they could compare their three versions and find out which combinations of doodads work best together. Instead you folks have taken it as a "the same area through time" exercise =P
That's fine though, carry on as you are - I'll likely do a theme next week that is closer to my original idea. I'm just amazed by how original folks get with ideas that I had pretty clear-cut in my mind.

Weekly Terraining Exercise #149
Hey there people!

It sounds like 3x the work, or maybe 1.5x but... might be interesting ;)

ouf...
Honestly Moz, I'm lost... Could you give us an example?

Essentially I believe you do this:
Create a landscape using only cliffs and textures, like this: (this represents a landscape made with only textures + cliffs)
[ A ]
Then, you select that landscape in the terrain pallet, and copy it. Then, paste the terrain, one area beside another, 3 times, like this:

After that, you add doodads to [ A1 ] to create a scene. After that, you proceed to do the same for [ A2 ] and [ A3 ], and making the same scene as you wanted to create in [ A1 ]. Now, you should have the same scene 3 times, but each with slightly different doodad setups, like this:
[ A1a ] [ A1b ] [ A1c ]
I might add pictorial references later, but for now work with this.
HydraMannequin got it right. Like I said, it's easier done then said. I made you guys an album of screenshots that should illustrate what I mean.
Ohhhh I understand now.
Nice try, terrans

Thanks! I'll go fix up number 2 when I get home

Can someone tells me how to copy paste a terrain with cliff texture water and height? I checked all the copy options and it doesn't works...

Whoa it is very strange, I started working on another map and it works normally....
You know, my relation with the editor is a kind of love-hate relationship. Pictures will come soon

Here's my idea. A kind of New York on another planet...

Talking about water... why don't you make it like; wild water is clean, then a bit corrupted, then ugly green? xDD
