I use the Sentry's Guardian Shield in a larger version on a powerful unit which protects all nearby units. Problem: performance goes down big time and I suspect it is partially related to the many distortion effects on screen. Can I somehow remove them from the model/actor? How are they even generated? I took a quick look at the actors and models, but my knowledge of models is pretty limited.
Hmm what do you mean by "distortion" effect? You can easily remove the visual effect by going into (Basic) Events: Events+ and deleting the event that starts Effect.GuardianShieldPersistent.Start, but unless you're on a machine with a fairly old video card, I'm not sure it's the problem. There are a ton of other blue bubbly Protoss-looking "shield" models though (like the lockdown one, just off the top of my head) but I don't think those are really that much less graphically intensive.
I don't think it works that way, the distortion is actually a mesh that has a distortion material.
Meaning, if you could change the distortion material texture ( normal probably) to a blanc texture, you don't need to checnge the model.
i believe you can just use TextureSelectedByID message to set the distortion texture to black.dds. It works almost in every case. I used this to hide unwanted parts (effects) of Archon model. Actualy "TextureSelectedByID" can produce some amazing results if used with some spell effect models. I realy didn't pay attention to this feature in the past, but for now i greatly increased available spell effects pool just by changing the textures of particles in spell models.

when the Normal guardian shield goes up it calls this
Field Guardian Shield
(Basic) Art: Model Assets\Effects\Protoss\SentryShieldBubble\SentryShieldBubble.m3
You are wanting it to NOT have this M3 model when the ability is used, Change it to this
Field Guardian Shield
(Basic) Art: Model Assets\Units\Test\InvisibleUnit\InvisibleUnit.m3

Or does anyone know a similar "shield dome" model that I can use which is not that performance intensive?
