28/04/2013 - State of the mod

Apparently HotS/the latest major Starcraft 2 update has once again caused some small problems throughout the campaigns. However, aside from episode 3, it seems there are no major issues present at the moment, 99% of everything should work. Everything should be compatible with both HotS and WoL - but probably more compatible with WoL. If you're experiencing problems, try switching to Wings of Liberty mode in the Starcraft 2 gameplay options menu. If you're getting "unable to open map" errors when using the campaign launcher and your Starcraft 2 is up to date, chances are you don't have the necessary files in the right locations - read the instructions carefully.

Know that we're still not happy with the state of the remake. We're already knee-deep in working towards a larger update to all six episodes, so there's no turning back to doing small bug fixing updates. We're making good progress so far, and looking to have everything done by the end of the year (hopefully major mod-breaking updates to the game have settled down a little bit by then). There likely won't be any updates this summer.

The upcoming version(s) will require Heart of the Swarm.

First of all, huge thanks to Ultraling and Maverck for having done most of the work and making this campaign possible. Both of them were awesome about letting me use their stuff to put this thing together. These are originally Ultraling's maps, found here in sc2mapster. I picked them up a long time ago and slowly worked on them, editing terrain, adding all kinds of flavor here and there, including Maverck's Brood War mod, and this is the result.

Features

  • all 10 original missions + the tutorial
  • original SC1 units and structures with original stats, including custom models
  • original SC1 Terran soundtrack
  • all the dialogue, voice acting & other miscellaneous text from the original campaign
  • classic unit decals, such as Alpha Squadron, Sons of Korhal etc.

"Artistic License"

(some notable differences from the original campaign)

  • Medics - to balance out the units Brood War style, and to provide more options to the player
  • extra "hero" abilities: Kerrigan has the snipe ability, Raynor can replenish Spider Mines
  • Mission 4 "The Jacobs Installation" - third person mode (optional)
  • two difficulty levels - with a somewhat more aggressive AI than in the original, in order to provide some challenge to the average player

Downloads

Links to the latest versions, by language. You will need both the maps and the mod file to play (see "How to play" below).

PLEASE NOTE that for the latest versions and the Campaign Launcher, you will also need the latest (or at least close to latest) version of Starcraft 2. For older versions, check the "Files" section.

English version

French version

German version

Russian version

Italian version

How to play

  • extract the mod file (SC1BWmod) to your "Mods" folder in your Starcraft 2 install directory (NOT the folder under "My Documents")
  • extract the map pack to the "Maps" folder in your Starcraft 2 install directory (create the folder if it doesn't exist)
  • extract the Campaign Launcher & setup to the same "Maps" folder (not the campaign folder)

Campaign Launcher installation:

  • launch the Starcraft 2 editor
  • open the setup map named SCMRsetup in your Maps folder and click the "test document" button on the top right (or press ctrl+F9)
  • wait until the launcher loads and you're at the title screen, then save the game and exit the map (press esc or F10 to open the game menu)
  • find the save file (named "Starcraft - Mass Recall" by default) in (your home/documents folder)/Starcraft II/Saves/VersusAI
  • copy or move the save file to the saves folder under your account folder (your home/documents folder)/Starcraft II/Accounts/.../.../Saves/Multiplayer (for example; any of the save folders will do)
  • Done! You can now log into the appropriate account and load the save from the load game-screen. You can use this save to play each episode.

more info:

  • You can copy the save file to whatever accounts you want. For example, if you want to play offline, copy it to your guest account folder.
  • If you're unsure of the right folders or can't find the Starcraft II documents folder, log into an account of your choice in SC2, go to the load game-screen, click on a save and click the "show in folder"-button. It will take you to the appropriate saves folder.

Fun, but damn hard. Also, for some reason the speed defaults to 'fastest' on every map. Not hard to change back to Normal or Fast but thought you should know.

This is kind of random, but in level 2 I encounted infested civilians shooting invisible guns. In videos of earlier builds of the mod these were infested marines. Is this change intended or a mistake?

Welp, a million downloads. Which of course include all the different components, versions, languages etc. Still, it's literally (and I mean literally) a thousand times more than I expected two years ago. Thanks for playing, everyone!

    Kostyarik:

Yeah there are random waypoints or otherwise designated targets in some maps, but the AI generally tends to go for the nearest base. I'd rather not talk about the AI in detail. :p We're hoping to make some small improvements on how it works.

Thanks for quick and informative reply, I wasn't in time to edit my post - I've just checked Trump Card - ingame with map cheat and in map editor. Looks like i just got into bad game situation: after that patroller group was sent to the cliff and noticed my exp, the goliaph wave which was gathering in Middle point went to help those tanks instead of rushing into my base. After that I loaded my savegame and right before that patrolling group came for me, I did a trick twice - first i pulled off my exp to main base, leaving com.station behind and nothing changed, the second time i pulled back my exp and blew com. station, so nothing would sign about my presence there and voila, the goliaph wave rushed into my base through the middle. For now I don't know how attack wave mechanic works, so conclusions are for you to make. I can provide a savegame if necessary.

EDIT: I confirm, auto-repair is working.. missed the button i suppose :)

Yes, you're very welcome to do that - it's appreciated.

    1. Fixed for the next version.

    2. We'll likely make adjustments to the difficulty in certain maps, such as The Trump Card. Some tweaks to the easier setting for this map have already been done, including reducing the amount of medics used by the AI.

It's possible the "path bug" you described does in fact exist. You should be using the high ground to your advantage as much as possible, though, which would prompt the death squad to engage you regardless. We'll look into it.

    3. The original mission objectives are one of the things we've never wanted to mess with. Something I'd be willing to consider is making the victory condition ignore missile turrets, perhaps. The expansion issue will be fixed (already is) for the next version.

Auto-repair is very much intended to be in the game. I believe it currently only works when you disable simple command card from the gameplay options.

Looking back at all the maps, there are so many small things that make me cringe, especially considering they're being played by thousands of people. So, since this is now what we do, we're taking care of all that and more. We won't be rushing out updates, but we're certainly not satisfied with this thing yet.

Hope it's alright to post a bit of bugs/sugestions here =)

    Well, here they are:

    1. The "Continue Campaign" button after the Tutoial doesn't work.

    2. The "Trump Card" is hell hard, even on easy difficuty. I couldn't catch the right mixture of units for completeing this mission at all for that amount of minerals which I have before base expansion, which I couldn't expand as well because of lack of defence. There could be several problems:

    • There could be a path bug for group of tanks and marines which patrol valley near the place where you make exp, because some times that group is sent to cliff which is between the exp.place and valley, and when it happens all that swarm of men and machines comes and exterminates my exp. to fu... ashes.
    • Even if I manage to blast off that company (I can only do that using wraths), another swarm, this time of goliaphs, comes and owns me in all the ways they want. I think ai builds way more of those than it sends in attack waves. Lowering the numbers of idle goliaphs or restrictng to construct them after a certain amount could help.
    • Medics are allowed for A.I. This should be considered only if for some reasons two previous problems can't be solved. This map is just too crowded to allow medics for ai, so they make a noticeable imbalance.

    3. In the "Bigh Push" mission can you edit the victory condition trigger so it would check not the whole map, but territories of gray and orange bases, so there won't be need for useless hunt for turrets, ect. Also there is a bug in this map - you can't build/land a command center in the middle of the minerals in the top-left corner, but, I'm trying to remember - maybe I am wrong, but I think there was just the same bug (or it was blizz's author desicion?) in the original starcraft campaign, so I don't know if it is right to fix it..

That's what I could notice so far, but I haven't played further than that)

Also, considering an author desicion not to completely port sc1 gameplay, which I support to be honest (such as placing medics in first three campaigns), it'll be "comme il faut" to have repair autocast for SCMs here. It would be a really great help for people like me, whose mirco is not prefect =)

P.S. I really like what you've made, I had a very exciting game experience and was about to forget that I'm playing fan-made maps. Terrain, decals, scripts, balance, etc are really on high level (there are some things of cause not polished to perfection, but most of them are close to it). Cheers and keep up such a good work.

Every episode now available in German, translated version by FirefoxGhost. Much props to him for the effort!

Uhh, no idea what's going on there. The textures should all be in there.

I get this starter edition bullshit too, occasionally. I find it helps to simply not have Starcraft 2 running when starting maps from the editor.
