Partly based on an idea by Gorandor, and partly based on last week's Terraining Thursday, the first theme for 2012 will be "Underground Spire". What this means is that you have to create some sort of huge underground cave that in some way incorporates a spire; as on the picture Gorandor posted here.
Happy new years to everyone I haven't really spoken to yet, and may your terrains be fruitful! =)
I think another contributing factor is people like me are getting back to school or work/ general life after the Christmas break and cant find much time to make this.
I'm busy making shiny stuff, because Christmas and such took time away from my progress. Will try to contribute, when I got some time. But, ye, might be a bit too high on the actual work required and for some maybe a bit too high of a skill level, even though there are some awesome options here ;/
I have an idea but I am working on my actual projects instead. (Use the height tool to raise up the terrain around an area then use rocktowers to make it close up a bit at the top. Then build a tower in the center)
Ok so, after a few weeks doing nothing here, I'm back for another post ! Um, I had no idea what is supposed to be the underground spire so I just tryed to copy the example from Gorandor. I worked at less two hours but after a moment I just continued without really copying. I think it is too much simple and need more doodads but I couldn,t find what I wanted. I do like the final result with the lightning and depth of field on the camera. Let's just say it is a creation inspired of the picture.
What Gorandor said, though also: you should probably raise those high areas to the left and right of the tower. Right now the sole reason this doesn't feel underground is because on that screenshot up there you can see past the cave wall.
I really like how you put a couple of WIP screenshots in there, should be very helpful to anyone new to terraining.
Acutally, there is alot more than one fog doodad. Haha.
And Mozared, I figured out too late that the picture which I inspired myself was an underground. And, that the black spot on the top left and top right, are actually the rocky roof. So you have to see my picture like if the black places in the back were actually in the front blocking your sight. Which doesn't work much. Haha. (Look at the example and see what I mean, it took me time to understand it the good way. At first I just saw a montain with a tower in front and a black background somehow. But the background is in front and is rock...)
For the screenshots during the making, I'll try to do that for the other WTEs. It might somtimes show how much work someone have put into the final picture. Because most of the time, we try something, we don't like it, we delete and retry something else until we find something we like. But all these try could show more than just something messed up. It could give ideas. It could inspire someone else for something. It could be better that the final picture... For example, I tryed to use the Xel'Naga wall, but it was not fitting well with the rest so I changed it into the temple wall, but I wanted something else than temple wall, but I didn't find. So I kept them.
Oh, and Gorandor, what do you mean by recolor the assets? You know... I just put some Omni red light on the mountains and played with the lightning setting haha.

This one may be a bit too demanding and restrictive, I guess.
*Strokes beard*
@Mozared: Go
To make an underground spire or not; that is the question.

@HPFarmer:
I'd suggest using imgur.com and the {{URL|Text}} tag for the forum ;D
Actually, it's week 63, the last one took 2 weeks :P
actually its 62 they count the exercises not the weeks P

@Scbroodsc2:
Like it. Try to recolor the assets you use for the tower and maybe place 2 fog doodads over the whole scene, instead of one =)
Try to upgrade on this one, should look very good.
