While the entire mechanics of making a 3d portal game is not viable, bring the mechanics of 2d into combat can be fun.
Edit: About the question someone ask about specifying where you can and cant place portal, probably since each map is preset and no white gel around, just use pre-defined region to control where the portal can be placed
And yea, what models did you use? I'd guess for blizzard it looks a bit like a scaled "HybridPlasmaMissile", but I have no idea what the impact model is.
Right now it's just an in-depth spell engine. I plan to allow players to customise their mage and their spells using an inter-game reward system. The rewards would be 90% vanity though, with the other 10% being minor changes in effect. I did plan to add a leveling system so that new players aren't bombed with 15 abilities, though I'd like it to be short and ideally optional.
All the spells are that blue-ish white colour since that is the colour I wanted for unmodified spells. I plan to add Terran inspired fire based spells, and Zerg inspired posion/healing based spells. I already made plenty of the poison/healing spells, though didn't include them yet because I feel healing would throw balance off too much. Healing is kinda cool though, in addition to restoring health, the spells also extend spell duration. Throwing a healing zone on yourself will heal over time. Throwing a healing zone on a reflect wall will make it last longer, while throwing a healing spell on a fluffball projectile will extend it's lifespan and hence range.
The goals I had while making this map were that everything should be visual. No hidden dots or damage buffs etc. All projectiles are avoidable and counterable by a large number of the support spells, so if you get hit by one you should "feel stupid", as in it's the player's fault for taking damage since everything can be avoided or countered.
At the end of the day I just wanted to make something that looked flashy and cool while being fast paced. Also talking a lot.
No the fun is watching someone crumble so badly to your taunts that they have to make a point of showing how angry you've made them even when you're not even talking to them. Must be the realization of how non-existant on the totem pole of awesome they are. Eivivyn, for example, has made some cool stuff. Karawasa on the other hand...well he's "making" a TD or something. It eats away at him.

there was going to be a "portal" mechanic in a future smashcraft map (2 more maps from the last one) that worked exactly like that.
