While this news is sad indeed, I keep asking myself a question ... What the hell those guys were thinking ? Reporting is an useful tool I believe, as I remember checking back on warcraft 3 "hentai maps" with adult contents (seriously ...) but "dyke" ? Who the f* find this word offensing ? First, it's a pretty rare word, second, it has various meanings, and third, noone use that word.
No fucking way. It's not Rodrigo's fault for using a word that has some negative connotations, how for example would I know if someone might be offended at the following words?
I agree with you, but "dyke" is only an example.
There is alot more words in the map that could have a negative, sexual, racist connotation.
Its the dictionary, all the words you can think of are there !
But yeah banning this map is stupid, like you said : Theses words have NO CONTEXT and are not toward any player.
Most likely a troll who ignorantly used the 'report' feature without half a thought.
Blizzard just takes reporting seriously... They'll scan the map for "any" offenses like a cop and add it to the list of "bannable stuff".
First of all, a dike refers to a levee or embankment designed to hold back water. A dyke is a derogatory term for a lesbian. And according to your Blizzard thread, a few users have listed other offensive words they've seen in your game. I never played the game so I can't really comment on that, but it is what it is.
For those of you saying "it's stupid they ban people over inappropriate word usage," it seems unlikely they banned him for ONE inappropriate word, but DYKE is particularly offensive. I know that here in Ontario, Canada, if you spray-painted DYKE on the hood of someone's car, they'd be investigating a hate crime.
I'm certain Rodrigo's intention wasn't to offend or hurt anyone, but his intentions don't matter. Blizzard is shielding its end-users from racist or sexually derogatory terms to protect the integrity of their game... as they should and as they are entitled to do so, since they made the game.
Look at it from a parents point of view. The game isn't rated NC-17 therefore. They can't allow anything in the game that can be considered at that level for the rating. As a parent would you want your kid to learn bad words or what you think are bad words. I know I wouldn't. This is why Blizzard took care of it quickly. I understand you used a database, but you have to read it first. Its like this when you write a paper you don't finish it without proof reading then revising.

In the US if you spray paint someones care and get caught its jail time unless you can afford the damages to be repaired.
Just had a thought. Slang is bad :/. Fag in the UK means 'Cigarette'. In the US it's short for 'faggot', of which the most widely used version is the homophobic insult version.
So if i make a map with cigarettes in and an NPC that has a cockney accent and calls them 'fags' it will get banned (although cigarettes would probably be a banning offence in itself :/).
I wonder what other stuff could be considered bad in some places, but not in others :/
EDIT: Just looked at the SC2 box and it clearly says that it is for 16+ only. So content should be appropriate for 16 year olds. And in the UK, you can legally smoke at 16. So they shouldn't ban smoking because if you are old enough to buy the game, you are old enough to smoke. Trouble is, they will ban it :(
Rated T for Teen in ESRB does not mean some offensive word that are used in their campaign can't be used, Those words can only be used rarely or to an extent before it break the Teen Rating. So what they mean is that their campaign can have those words, while custom map can't anymore.
While you can say that online experience might differ. The game has no offline content whatsoever, and the game together with bnet 0.2 is considered an online experience, its pretty retarded to say that online experience might differ while you're stamping a T for Teen on the box.
They cant handle the every single map. Some kiddo reported your map, write a list of words he found offensive, they take your map and ran a script check whether those word present inside, then banned it, give you 1 tiny example.
There's no reasons to blame blizzard and their course of actions, but its just feel so bad, that just happen when smt gone bad and you cant blame yourself.
The only advice for Rodrigo is to act professionally to deal with offensive word in your database. No childish rant can save the day.
After all, this just feel so bad, brb killing some puppies
I thought a dyke was the same as a levee... Didn't even know about the insult version.
Also, this word banning is ridiculous. It's online content, and that's not rated by the ESRB and Blizzard shouldn't be able to get sued for something like it. And ofcourse you'd get punished by the law if you spraypaint an offensive word on someone's hood, but that's in a context. This is just an unit running at you with a random word above it. No context, it's not aimed towards anyone. Seriously, how can you be offended by it!?
Where is the world going with it's retarded censorship. I miss the time when people could say fuck on the television without a beep.
The moment I see censorship in a game, I turn it off.
I find the term "teen" derogative and offensive! I shall report your post and it shall be removed!
j/k, but seriously, everything is offensive to someone. I find Justin Bieber offensive, doesn't mean he should be removed from the world (well, ok, it does, but doesn't mean he will be).
If words such as "dyke" or "spoon" (or such) appear randomly above units and you would have to type them to kill the units, but you get offended by it instead, you really have problems...
On the Blizzard Website is the Code of Conduct. It has pretty much every section for rules and the action that will follow while on the forums. It states:
Sexual Preference
This category includes both clear and masked language and/or links to websites containing such language or images which:
Insultingly refer to any aspect of sexual preference pertaining to themselves or other players
If a player is found to have participated in such actions, he/she will:
Be temporarily banned from the forums
Be given a final warning, any further Code of Conduct violations may result in a permanent ban from the forums
In this section you clearly can see where using the term dyke in a derogatory sense would lead you on the forums. So if you receive a temp ban first for first time offenders.. can they not do the same with there map system? It just seems that it was a little harsh even if they were covering there ass to ban his map epically seeing how in banning his map is unable to upload any new ones.
A word is a word, how one perceives it is THEIR fault, not those who used it (Think about it from a neutral standpoint, the owner of the bullet wouldn't be at fault, if someone trips on them and gets hospitalized, no matter how cunning you twists your words). The offended went online, played a map that uses words from a dictionary, so the offended was playing the game on behalf of his own discretion.
Humans will continue to find reasons, or in this case, excuses, to change their standpoint, so I agree with programmer's statement that it will lead to nowhere...
It's stupid to think that because the mass majority thinks it's bad, that it should be enforced. Blizzard enforced it not because they believed the mapper intended to use that word, but because of the mass media. But this is just me ranting about society, of which can't be saved from it's peculiar doom.
Apparantly, I think that if Blizzard lets this slide, it'll provoke some questions and "people" from the media who so loves to talk down Blizzard, so putting their reputation on the line, they won't let custom maps mess with their publicity...
Strangely enough, they don't care about the WoW rants and complaints.
It isn't reasonable to check 10000 words. That's not the issue. It's kind of lame that they are calling people on something that seems so insignificant, but that isn't as bad as the fact that they don't give any second chance to fix the problem -.-. Seems lazy and uptight of them.
Simple. Its your fault for not checking all the words. Its a lot of work, but yeah, you have to. Germany's version of Wolfenstein still had a swastika on one texture. It was small, but it was there. Its banned here for games. They had to remove all their games from the stores.
Check the words for what? Obviously a swastika is bad. What's wrong with the word dyke? It is just a dam.

Actually the spelling "dyke" is used interchangably with "dike". Its only recent the the term "dyke" had any meaning whatsoever relating to lesbians.
Well the term dyke is an engineering term used to generally describe anything the changes the route of a water way.
The fact that "stupid" people find it offensive should be a non-issue.

Lol, I just imagined a nexus word wars where you get to send insult at your opponents.
"noob" "butthead" "fucknut"
It'll be good for us blow off some steam, when we just lost a game !
lol

From what I have seen they don't ban for slang cause words such as bad ass, so imo blizzard has done nothing wrong what so ever.

Try reading a dictionary meant for grown-ups.
