You have to make new (set that will define all the objects if you create) or copy / duplicate elements (you cannot change core objects/abilities/validators ; making a "new" one is not the same as copying: if you are starting out with the data module, do really start by duplicating because it will ease you in / teach you all the crossed referenced objects/etc involved in "1" unit you are doing (in your case you want a hatchery with "x" different from the core hatchery and building that up from scratch (even if selecting the hatchery as "base" model) is not going to be easy)
the validator(s) correlated is the one that probably prevented you from building it ..
building a hatchery on creep what were you thinking..
the unit has a data field (select unit in data module/go in the unit tab/footprints : usually it has a #unit footprint# in there.. if you can find a core footprint that suits your needs .. just select that one, after having duplicated it (so as to be able to change its parameters if required / like changing validators attached for instance)
How would you change the footprint of a Hatchery without screwing up it's creep-spread and ability to be built on and off creep.
BECAUSE:
last time I messed with this, I was unable to build hatcheries on creep.
copy the footprint of the hatchery and change it from there if you have no clue what you are doing.

@FunkyUserName: Go
So how would one change the default Hatchery footprint to say 3x3 without switching to a pre-existing footprint?
Do you want to keep the "distance from minerals and vespene"? Paste this into the footprint data:
(disclaimer: havent tested properly, the relevant field is to set negative placement for creep into false/0/whatever)
And then on the hatchery unit data set Footprint to Footprint3x3DropOffCreepSourceContour and Placement Footprint to Footprint3x3DropOffCreepSource
