Is making a map a third person game still not viable due to bnet lag or whatever? Is there any way to make it better? What exactly was/is the problem with doing third person controls?
Battle.net has a 0.125sec delay and predictive collision is impractical with the SC2 engine, so things aren't ideal. We won't be seeing Halo or CoD anytime soon.
With that in mind, a less twitchy style of FPS or TPS would be interesting. The SC2 engine is capable of handling hundreds of times more units than an FPS engine (I believe Halo supported around 32, while SC2 comfortably supports up to 1024 and is capable of supporting 10x that). I'd like to see a FPS that played to the strengths of the SC2 engine rather than crying over the weaknesses.
You still have the problem of making a TPS in an RTS engine. The processes that real TPS games go through to make the game run smoothly are impossible to do in the SC2Editor.
You could always use a thrid party software and then upload your map to somewhere that isn't SC2. I use netbeans for that personally. (That was a joke. I was implying you would need to write the entire game from scratch with C++ or something)
The "Key Pressed" trigger event still generates network latency (as said in the tooltip).
Blizzard said they were going to reduce the key input lag in a later patch so that it will be about the same delay as issuing an order through a normal right-click command. This has not happened yet.
The only way that it's viable is offline and single-player.
Well I wasn't thinking of a shooter it's just third person view. I was thinking more along the lines of a dota in third person. Would there be a problem with a dota in third person? Would a third person where you lock on to the target and strafe and what not around that target be possible? Kind of like grand theft auto where you lock on and don't really aim.
Sorry I put shooter in. I should have put third person camera. Although maybe something like wow with wsad and click to move kind of controls if wsad is laggy.

Short answer: Yes, still bad.
Dunno... the delay? ;) If you are asking me, why exactly there is so much delay, no idea. But it easily surpasses 1 second in Bnet.
There were some attempts to somehow use data command buttons to improve the performance, but well, I didn't hear of any really major breakthrough.
Depends what kind of shooter.

Great to be back and part of the community again!

third person is fine , the WASD is not.
i have a third person on Bnet and its not laggy ( game only in ALPHA so far doh )
just make sure to add FAR CLIP to the camera to prevent people with shiiity comps from not being able to handle it.
@Selfcreation: Go
Could you tell me the name of the bnet map? I want to see how smooth the third person camera is.
its not open to public yet , it will be soon ish. ill let you know
Uh, sorry, your title gave me the wrong impression. How could this happen? ;)
