Though the update's a bit late, this week's WTE is ready for you guys to take it on: we're bringing the "Do That Doodad" back again. The idea of the theme is still the same: I pick one doodad along with a minimum size, after which you are required to build any kind of terrain you like as long as it includes the doodad in question. In essence, you're forced to build your terrain around a single huge doodad. This time, the doodad of choice is "Redstone Lavafall" while the size is "At least 300". This means that you need to use the doodad 'Redstone Lavafall' in your map with a size of at least 300 - aside from that you're free to terrain as you like.
I'm hoping to see some amazing volcano's or huge firey landscapes up here. Good luck everyone, and have fun!
Hm. I was waiting for the next WTE. But its almost impossible for me to make something out of this, as the texture and model is very outdated and odd looking. Makes it even worse when the size has to be minimum 300. Another problem is that it's only half a model, so to make something real you'd have to roll, or to place it up against something else.
I guess it's made as a challenge, or an exercise, but I think this one was bad, sorry :(
I agree with you Phail that this model at scale 300 is quite..ugly, but in order to get something to look good you have to explore all possibilities, color, scale, pitch roll, lighting, fog, water, textures, create some environment to explore the possibilities...
Of course when you start with something not looking good, its harder to get it to look good, but anything is possible ;) And I'll do something this time. Believe.
Edit: this is what i came up with in about 30 min. It's not the most interesting terrain, but still can be more optimised to look more nice. Note this was just a fast try than a wte that i would force myself to do something good. :P
Yeah, I know you're right about it. But yet I still think that it's impossible to make something nice and... modern looking if you know what I mean. The model looks like something from Warcraft 3 IMO. And having to make an environment with 1 prop that looks weird, and then a bunch of other ones that looks.. newer and better- that's just weird, and it will make it stand out.. and not in a good way.
Either way, I liked your terrain as a picture. But what I personally strife for when I'm doing the WTE, or just terraining in general,- is to make a terrain that looks like it was made for a campaign map, or just made by Blizzard themselfes. which I think that a lot of people in WTE fails to do. But then again, it is an exercise.. and no ones perfect, I'm not perfect either..
Yeah. The idea is always to spread the possibilities of what you can do / think of when doing a terrain for anything. Adding some restriction, like what would happend if you do maps, sometimes its space, sometimes its the kind of terrain, the cilffs, the textures... whatever does a restriction... And this is WTE, ofc its kind of "meh" starting with a bad looking doodad, but there is still plenty of possibilities. :)

Yeah, it's not a great doodad, but that just means you have to get creative. Threw this together while I was watching True Detective.
I like it! Lucidiguana you are a creative guy and this is good. I know i will be seen more from you. Good work!
