Hello everybody! This week I've got something exciting for you all in the WTE...
Weekly Terraining Exercise #41
This week's theme is going to be a Tofu Arena Contest! For those who may not know, Tofu is a 'mod' that is being developped by Dogmai and Dreyece. The idea of the mod is that there will be a set number of heroes with specific skills, who can battle in different fashions - the mod will involve a pure arena, a CTF style play, deathmatch, DOTA-like maps, and more. Look here for their official thread.
That said: in co-operation with Dogmai I've decided to make this WTE a contest-style exercise. What you are going to do is create arenas that can be used with the Tofu mod - once they are finished, Dogmai and Dreyece will take a look at them and select the best of the bunch for use with their mod. This means that you can get your arena released as an official Tofu map, and your name will be credited in one of the most well-spoken projects currently in the community!
So let me provide you with a list of rules and conditions the arenas will need to adhere to;
As for the size, you can pick between creating a 1v1, 2v2/3v3 or 6v6 arena. All measurements are in 'red squares', which can be viewed by going view>show grid>large in the editor taskbar.
1v1 arenas should be 2 x 6.
2v2 or 3v3 arenas should be 6 x 6.
6v6 arenas should be 8 x 8.
Both cliffs and ramps can be used; note that in TOFU, there are teleporters in place that can teleport you up and down cliffs, meaning that not every cliff needs to have a ramp access to it (portals also take up less room than ramps). You can simulate portals by placing down simple beacons or points, as their working versions will have to be added in later. As for their colour coding - green teleporters teleport heroes to another area on the same level (say, across a canyon), blue teleporters teleport heroes a level up and red teleporters teleport heroes a level down. 'Multi-coloured' teleporters teleport them to a different level altogether.
Team Deathmatch Arenas should have a somewhat protected base. This means they need to have some method of anti-spawn camping and should be somewhat difficult (if at all possible) to access.
The idea behind the Arenas is that each one is a space station floating in space, so the outside around the Arena should look like a space station, but inside the Arena anything goes.
Texture set is a free choice, but one of the cliffs will be Ulnar Manmade.
FFA maps needs to be larger and have more spawn points. If people want to they can create these, but Dogmai has already said himself that these have little chance of actually making it into Tofu because of size complications.
That said, feel free to get to work! If you keep those simple 'rules' in terms of lay-out in your mind, anything else goes and you're free to come up with whatever you like. As a final note, this WTE will receive a week extension as it is a contest and I want to give everybody a chance to work on it. As a result, it won't end on monday the 25th, but rather monday the 1st of August.
I'll ask Dogmai to confirm, but I think just one - I think they are going to copy terrain over into one bigger map or such.
Also, week extension is really likely to happen with the responses we've gotten so far.
If they are going to copy terrain into a larger map, can we realy use different textures? (I don´t know if texture limit dosen´t apply to terrain copying?)
And if it is the same map, what textures are they using?
Sounds fun!
Keyeszx, you should ad the portal locations yourself, since you probably have an ide how you want the units to move around the map, dunno about towers and underground, but hence not mentioning it probably no.
They should state the 8 textures that can be used. Else this whole 'project' is pretty much useless...
Unless they just want too get some good ideas out of it ofcourse.
so we are supposed to make a battle arena for a unit duel type thing. I see... so what is it supposed to look like or does it matter? I have a few ideas but it will probably end up looking like a melee map but smaller. Also yeah what tileset are we working with?
Well those screenies just don't give the map justice. It looks like a series of cliffs going around in an oval? Of course I can do better than that ;) I just need to know what tileset I'm working with.
edit: what I was trying to ask before was if there were any American born English speaking mapsters out there. I sure as hell couldn't see any as 90% of all videos have Europeans in them. Sorry to word it all racisty before, I didn't mean to.
EDIT: Will they be adding portal locations and xel'naga towers in themselves? Do we need to create an underground area?
Yes to the first. If possible, like mentioned, mark them with simple beacons (place of power units) or points so it's more clear where they are supposed to located. In case of the second; you could create an underground arena, yeah, as long as you stick with the theme; the arenas themselves, lorewise, are located on several space platforms modeled and shaped to be arenas.
In regards to all questions about textures: I have no idea how Dogmai and Dreyece intend on implementing them but Dogmai has confirmed that aside from that one cliff, all texture choice is free right now - let them worry about implementation.
Actually I think I'll pass on this one. I don't know anything about the project and I have no affiliation with games like that. Congrats on what they did but like I said Id rather do an actual WTE later.

I'm in, just got one question: are we supposed to make just one arena? Or as many as we can fit in a map?
I'm in, but that one week extension would be great. ;)
I'm in for this too. Same question: how many maps can I make?
The week extension would be really nice.
Nine hours in the making...

Do they want any specific themes or layouts?

Your just putting down beacons to "mark" where you feel the portals should go. Dogmai will add in the working versions if he uses your map.

Goodluck everyone ;)

woah slow down there. These people hosting this here weekly terraining exercise are extremely european :D
Anyways, look at the sc2streamster or their video to get a feel of what the map should look like.

I'm in too. I was thinking of using the Meinhoff textures.
@Kingcrab09: Go Roflmao
Well, here's my first ever entry to a WTE. :)

Hope you like it! Feedback and constructive criticism are very much welcomed (and wanted :] ).

That looks okay, though the blood could be a bit less shiny.

Thanks, I had the alpha at full so you couldn't see all the space underneath it, thought that might look a bit strange. :)
