I'm feeling particularly mean this week, so I've got a tough WTE theme for you guys: "The Sea". Since the Galaxy Editor really isn't equipped for water type terrains, it's up to you all to make a terrain that represents a sea or ocean and make it look enticing.
I remembered the Under Da Sea one, but the difference between this one and the other two is that the sea itself really is the central subject here. With The Rising Tide, a bunch of people made a 'floating base' or such. I want to see a sea that somehow isn't just water and waves. Which sounds like a challenge to me, so I'm wondering what folks will come up with.
2 things, 1 is graphic settings, 2 is data. In this case the graphics are set to low which looks ugly. If it was set to Max it would probably have shorewaves. Then to remove those you would have to go in the data and edit the water settings.
Dude! No need to use Ugly when it comes to terrain. Is all about low graphic's

Your island could use some rocks that will give a more real look. Also in the doodad section there are bubbles doodad that will help a lot when it comes to under the sea screenshots. It looks really cool also if you can use debris from damage command center or barracks actually any debris looks good. Other than, on every WTE i see your posts I will say you are getting better every time. So yes I do keep an eye on what is your next screenshots going to look like and your take on Moz homework for the week. Keep up the good work. :-)
This is map I did sometime last year for MikeTheSpike Is called When Subs Attack you can find it on Bnet. I did try to capture the bubbles with no luck. I did not wanted to add too many doodad cause of lag. Thats why is a little empty.
This is the link of the map on youtube
Yeah its ok... Its just i get pissed off when i get judged even though my computer can not support high graphics and people think i am bad at terrainig...
Would love to start doing some mapping. But im currently serving in the military for some time.
Anyways, about the "ugly" word. You are all acting like pre-teens about that. People are coming here to be judged etc etc. Some people use words that they think describe it best. Dont get mad about something like that. We are (most) a bunch of adults, so act like it here okay.
I really like the concept of this. I feel you could expand your skill set by making more use of textures and elevation. For example, if you take a look at many beach islands (e.g. Caribbean etc) often times the trees will come right up to the shoreline, often holding the bank together as the sea eats away underneath it. There doesn't always need to be that level of such a crisp, clean, distinct border on the shore.
As well as this, the coral reef I love - the doodad placement and detail are great. I always recommend adding variety into a terrain. Again, the shoreline is the easiest focal point of this piece of critique - are there no stones? No doodads you could re-colour to make coconuts? etc. etc.
Small things like this can transform a terrain from 'great' to 'oh wow'.

To be fair, I don't think that's what Brood was doing at all. He's been here a long time and he's usually a very helpful and stand-up fellow. His wording might've been a little strong, but I think the main attitude behind his post was "As great as a terrain might be, low graphics will always detract from it as it just makes things look objectively worse". Which I completely agree with. Nobody's judging you for not having a high-end computer or for the terrain you make here, it's simply a shame when stuff ends up being low graphics. Please don't take it as a personal attack, everyone here is glad to have more people participate in the WTE.
As for constructive criticism: what I think your terrain mostly needs is some kind of barrier to make the middle bit a proper lagoon (a body of water that is at low tide separated from the ocean). I really liked the rocks you put in that were sticking out, perhaps adding 15 of those would make it look pretty nice. You'd have a bit of a fish-trap like situation too, so you could even add castaway humans on the island.

Here is my little 2 cents. I was at first inspired by Wargirl's terrain, and though "it'd be cool if I make a kind of drown temple" but in the making of, I was not so inspired and went a bit randomly with heigh and cliffs. I added water but found it would be better if the view point was underwater with some kind of effects to make it feel it this way. I added couple of green stuff, water bubble from the scaled Biodomes hidden underground, sunrays, etc. And this is what it turned out. I did not put that much effort into it, but it's the first wte i participate in since a couple weeks. I could have added rocks, modified the lighting, make the whole scene better etc.
When I though "it looks decent" I had a reflexion about, what is the subject? And it was just vaguely underwater stuff without any focal point. So I added the blimp and made the camera depth of field to focus on it. Sounds okay to me. Definitly could be better, but the point of WTE is not to make a perfect terrain but to find little tricks and interesting ways of approaching an idea and doing it.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #235
Hey hey people!

Good luck to you all! :)

We've got a similar WTE with some awesome terrain if you remember...
But it's a good time to get back into it again and give the chance to new people to explore this good idea :D

So you hope to see something more of this genre: http://cdn.lightgalleries.net/4d39ace4991e4/images/IMG_9111-1.jpg

I have made an island with a small lagoon within it... As you can see, there are fish, "crabs" and "lobsters". The Doodads are suppose to be corals...
How did you make no waves appear when the water touches the land.

Oh come on—you don't need to call it ugly.

Well... My computer does not handle high graphics, that is why it looks bad... This is a message for Scbrood2.

Oh well, excuse me. Maybe the word was more significant than I thought. I'm too used to terrains in high graphics :S Sorry.

I would not have been able to say it better.
