It is possible to edit HotS models but you have to do it via Blender. The Blender scripts are able to import HotS models but the M3 files it itself exports are (unless they've changed it) compatible with the 3d Studio Max M3 scripts. So in other words, import the model to Blender, re-export it as a new M3 file and then import THAT into Max.
It does work with some models like I've done the primal hive into blender and exported it and then used it in max no problem. I think the issue is then switching it back to blender again. Even non HoTS models we've had issues with switching back and forth. At any rate there are certain ones that still won't work converting from blender like HoTS ghost Kerrigan.

HOTS models can't be exported out. I believe we can only edit WOL models right now.

@Kanitala: Go Not true. Me and GhostNova have a hard time cooperating because he uses 3dsmax and I use Blender.
