For this week, I've got another theme that you folks might find interesting. With the theme being "A Bug's Life", the idea is that you make a terrain from the viewpoint of an insect. Think huge Zerus plants and Zergs, and tiny rocks appearing as mountains to the bug whose eyes we're looking through. It's a pretty straightforward idea, but it is hard in execution.
Good luck everyone, let's see if you can make this happen!
I'm adding here for everyone, try to think about, if you do a very close view of something, the background should technicaly be blured. In this WTE you might want to work around the plants and stuff yeah, but also cameras and their settings. In general, when I think to a bug's life, it makes me think to all the things we doesn't care about at our scale, but at a very small scale it's a huge problem, think of rain, for us, we don't care, but for an ant getting flooded... it's another story.
I spotted the scantepede. This terrain is very dense, alot of trees and stuff in the view. I know real forest tends to be a mess, but here is it too much a mess? Still, it's cool. Well done Phail.
Lol I know. As I said too I rushed it a lot, because I just wanted to make something like it. I may try something new later.
The trees are supposed to be small plants though
There is not enough scale reference to get it right. The scantipede could either look like a small ant or, normal scale with the environment being huge. Maybe just a little camera setting could make it look better as i said in my first post.
Here is my try on this one. I really like the theme as it's something very small focussed and detailled. It's not about making a huge building, platform, forest, mining mine, etc. It's just a simple, bug's eye view of the world.
The night scenes are gorgeous, but I find it very hard to figure out what I'm supposed to look at on the more zoomed-out pictures. Do you have the bug through whose eyes we're looking through placed down somewhere? It's all a bit hard to differentiate between what's what, and if I didn't know to search for something I'd feel like the non-first person pictures are mostly just regular pictures of one specific bit of jungle terrain.
The top down view were mostly experiments about looking at something far while having something close in the view...like it happends all the time wherever you look. Think of looking at your monitor while having your finger near your eye. Also the pictures without depth of field were to show the whole terrain. So yeah, it's pretty much just looking at a forest-ish environment from different angles with scaled down units here and there.
I also used my new texture knowledge about alpha texturing, so you have multiple textures overlaying. For example you put grass and you want to see the texture of roots. You use the texture "=" tool, set the alpha to like 100 and then draw above. I also used the different like; spot drawing instead of circle. I used the foliage generator and all i could think of. I tried making my own light but it did not render very well. I wanted to do a night scene... in the end I just used a light from another pre-made light.
I should think of doing pictures during the work in progress.

That's quite an interesting idea.

Yeah I like the idea.
Working on projects:
I hurried with this one. Just to get a sense of it :p I usually make my maps seem a bit "campaign"-ish, this one differs.

Hmm I'm not sure myself. When I look at it I don't really see anything right off that gives a sense of scale...

Not even the scantipedes? ;d
