I was looking around for a map making community and I found myself here. I don't play sc2 or know the general state of the game but I'm really more interested in building something.
Never used the map editor but I have some experience with programming and plenty of ideas. I don't know how much time I have to devote to this, but I'd like to give it a shot.
It all depends on how ambitious you are I suppose. When I first started out I would make a map in under a week. Then as I got more experienced, I wanted to do cooler and cooler things. My last map took me like six months of on and off working on it, lol.
Yeah, I would definitely play a couple campaign maps and custom maps to get a better understanding what the editor is capable of.
Interesting. Lately seeing a bunch of people not interested in the game but more in the engine. Blizzard should really think of publishing a stand-alone version of the editor, much like Unity. If not for SC2 then definitely for WC4.
Check out the Custom Campaign Initiative for awesome maps to play!! Don't forget to leave feedback, encouragement or a gold star! Link in my signature.
Ive been working with the Editor for a year now. I had zero programming experience and it was an epic experience. Just things like conditional statements were mind boggling to me, but I kept at it. I spent countless hours figuring stuff out, but I'm pretty proud of my first map even though it pales in comparison to the stuff made on this site!! I guess in the end it was a complete waste of time, except I had a total blast and every time I play it I get so excited that I made something that doesn't break or produce 10 million zerglings or a black screen. :)
Good luck with your endeavors and remember that most of your problems have already been figured out by people on this site!! You just have to ask and provide the code snippet!!

This is something I think is awesome when game editors can do this. I also have no actual programming experience, but still have been able to get pretty decent at the editor over time. And it can be quite fun (definitely have spent more time in the editor than actually playing SC2, haha.)
Yeah exactly the same for me. I was bored when I saw crazy korean with like 400 actions minutes...
The key to accomplish your map is to ask when you don't know how to do what you want. I lost hundreds of hours to understand and you will save a lot of time with the forum.

Is there anybody out there?! :)
Yup. Do you at least have the game? You need the licences to publish any maps.
Programming skills will help you with triggers. Just spend what time you feel like and aim at a goal or maybe a few in parallel.
Main issue is with actors the devil is in the detail so you can find making a perfect unit can take as much time as everything else for the unit.

Welcome to the chat but you still have to play it to know the basics.

Most good rpg maps for WC3 took 2 years+ before hitting beta.
