Hmm, I was just curious, How many mappers out there are engineers like I am?
I suppose a trait of mappers is that we enjoy building stuff, So I'm sort of expecting a big portion of the community to be in either engineering or IT majors.
Anyways, the question is: What is your profession? Also, why do you map?
For me, I map because I enjoy building stuff and finding the most efficient way to implement an idea/system within the galaxy editor :)
I'm a bored teenager. I think that answers both questions :)
OK, seriously, why do I map? No friggin idea. Seriously. Trying to think about it and I have no clue why I bother with mapping. What made me first map? Well, i liked the creeps in wc3 and wanted to use them, so I made a map spammed with mercenary camps. After that I have no idea what motivated me to map. I guess I like playing custom maps and wanted to try it out on my own, and I find it real easy so I just do it.
Currently unemployed, my last job was with a counter top manufacturer which I won't name because they sent me down the river so they could replace me with Illegals, but I have some friends that still work there so I don't wanna get the place closed down. Anyway I did everything from autocad, to running a CnC machine to, fabricating solid surface counter tops. The job was great the people running the company not so much.
I make maps because I dream of someday working for Blizzard or some other company in the video game industry. I truly enjoy making and play testing my maps everything from building triggers to making my terrain pretty. My first experience was over 10 years ago with something called RPG maker, but not that crappy PS1 thing some of you may remember I think it was made in japan then translated to English by a Russian so it wasn't the easiest thing to use but I had a lot of fun making my own little super deformed rpg which was kinda like Shining Force and FF3 had a baby full of terrible dialog but a few of my high school buddies still played it to the end which only took about 5 hours if your read everything.
I'm a high school student, and I've always loved making games. When I was little I'd draw and plan out games, even though I had no idea how to make games. Eventually I started making real computers games. The Sc2 editor is just so easy to make really cool maps. Its irresistible!

I can't say exactly but to me it's one of the funnest things to do. To answer your question, I just graduated with a comp sci. degree and will probably do iphone app development; but I just love making maps... it gets rid of the stupid things you don't want to do like physics and math and lets you focus on the interesting game design parts. Triggers are also like simpler programming which is great.
As much as I do love it though, it will probably always be a non-paid hobby of mine. I like to do my own thing, but also the pay for mapping is quite weak or nonexistant...
I finished the highest possible form of 'Secondary Education' we have here in Holland, which translates to something between 'high school' and 'college' for the American folks here. I don't have a current 'profession', and by now it's bugging me - school so far wore me out so badly that it took a full year of recovering for me to really get back up to strength. Right now I'm in what you could call a sabbatical, where I'm trying to figure out what exactly I want to do. I'm looking into some educations, but the most likely path I'll see myself take is surfing the wave of e-sports renewal, mainly on the mapping front. Basically a second generation to what folks like Day9 are doing right now.
To me, games never have what I want. Whenever I used to play a game, I would be like "Man, why can't this happen!" I perfect example was pokemon. In 3rd grade it bugged me how there was no way to tell where you were while you were moving, and that bugged me a ton. So I started messing around with HTML and XML and stuff in 3rd grade, then got into C and Java in 5th grade.
Now that I am in High School I can actually learn how to use the knowledge that I have obtained over the years. The issue for me has always been the memorizing part of everything. I never had a problem with anything relating to syntax or anything, I just couldn't remember stuff. But now that I am in High School, like I said before, that is becoming easier, and especially now that I have my own computer.
The only problem is that I was born with what may seem like a blessing, but it's not. I was born athletic, but I don't really like sports. So I am obligated to devote a lot of my time to sports, which I don't want to do. And then of course there is school and my social life, which I have to keep up with as well.
So the point is that the SC2 Editor is a fast and easy way to keep up with my programming with the limited time I have. I can go on the computer for a while, but most of that time I am doing homework or facebook or something else... So the SC2 Editor is perfect because I don't have to take the time to write out every line of code, the triggers kind of do that for me.
So yeah, that's pretty much it. You now know more about me than I would like you to know, but w/e. I will live. (I think?)
Hmm, I was just curious, How many mappers out there are engineers like I am?
None, were all teenagers.
Me, I'm in middle school. I go to a special school for gifted and rich kids. (I'm one of the gifted kids there, not one of the rich ones.) I've made games my whole life, sense a little 5 year old making board games. Nowdays I spend my time sitting behind my computer. (When I'm not doing my geometry homework or my LASS pappers.) I already have some exprience in Cplusplus tons of experienced in mapping. Last saterday my team (me and a friend.) won the WORLD robofestcompetition. I did the programming for that robot. :) In general I'm just skilled with computers (It runs in the family, thats why I'm allowed to sit all day.) I'm also creative and stuff. :) Why do I map?... Because It's fun, and I feel like I'm learning stuff. Figuring out stuff in the editor is so rewarding. For those that don't know, I'm proud of the fact I figured this whole editor out.
I finished College in NZ (high school in US?) and did one year of university here. which completely wore me out I have spent the last 3 years doing odd jobs and not really knowing what path I want to take as a career, I think I may have finally set upon something, but again its not something i am passionate about but could settle doing.
I have always enjoyed gaming and when it comes down to it I like coming up with ideas. the problem being I come up with to many and fail to implement them, but I guess that is a good thing as when I do it i'm enjoying it, and its before the stage where it feels like its becoming a chore.
Judging from that one video where we saw his looks, I think Sixen came out of his mother at birth spurting sunglasses, a beard, an Ipod and a beanie, and he makes money of looking suave.
Artist and video editor and professional media roadie/decorator and father and comic book penciller/painter (or was that the artist bit ? ;) )..
i also redecorate/fix people's houses to feed the wife and kid :)
i understand the need to ask/question, but isn't obvious that grown ups are not the norm in games?
i map therefore i am, or is that "sideways"..i can never remember?
Nice to meet you, i've meet loads of engineers throughout the years and you're right, you guys like building stuff.. ;)
i started almost 25 years ago, was sick bored in school and then life got too busy for it... now when my kid naps/sleeps i get mapmaking/gaming time :)
ouuu i think the devil is upppp bye ;)
I'm certainly no engineer, more of an artist. Most likely my profession will end up being 3D Animation, though it could also be modeling, texturing, or concept art. Can go any way in the art field of Game Design at this point, as I'm still in college.
And I map because I want to see good maps, and I sometimes have ideas for them.
Whoa >_> you're really senior to me then. I'm still 25, almost done with masters in engineering and expecting to start working before the end of this year. Still not really sure which line I wanna go into, but I gotta pick carefully. I started back in the SC era and picked up from there. I have this thing for programming stuffs : ) I don't really play games much. I prefer making them, its just damn satisfying watching the pieces come together :P
Very interesting thread. I haven't introduced myself yet so I'm going to do it now too.
I'm 25-year old and I live in central Finland. I graduated from business school 2005 and I have been intrested about computers and games my whole life. At the moment I'm working as a civilian servant and doing office work about economy of our town's (Jämsä) health care. (Sorry for bad explanation / grammar...) In Finland every man have to serve in military for 6 to 12 monts or complete 12 months civilian service. I have worked as a customer servicer in few companies.
I made my first map to Starcraft1 about... 12 years ago? I also did few maps to Warcraft3 but not many because I didn't liked WC3 so much. I have also done some maps for Wolfenstein3D and Doom. Or well... I mostly just added more monsters and weapons for current maps =D
Why I'm doing maps? ... Hmmm... I think this some kind of way to do something creative like a musician who plays guitar or an artist who paints. It is great feeling to figure how to do some things by editor and use in my map. As always in hobbies it have to be fun and (enough) challenging. By doing my maps I'm also giving a message to Blizzard that I really enjoy your game.
Going to post this as it is =) Maybe I'm going to add something later.
the only real problem is that you got to fight teeth and nails to get into the few jobs where your input is valued/used (most jobs give you "too much done already" and although the satisfaction is still present, it's not the same... )
if i may, go/aim for a high responsibility spot in a "dull status/market", make a "win", and then switch to a post with less responsibility but huge input :)
i have only picked up galaxy for the editor. i laddered season 1 to get back into gamer mindset and then maped (on my scarce spare time).. got back off playing again (bia t ches took my loose/win ratio, this will not do!) for more than a month... i agree it's so much more fun "seeing it all work out "better than your "cautious estimates" made you think it would.
just got into ppppppppppphoton cycles : precious and awe some, might give up season 2 altogether and get into triggers or even a heinous actors... so refreshing to switch games ;)
i might even go into politics :))
ps: your picture is hot... too bad they don't make them like this for real ;)
my girl has that eye lock thingee, boy am i lucky :)

Im a terrainer and i enjoy creating good looking maps. It helps kill bordem.
Because I fucking love it!

+1 to that xD
