It's not related to SOPA (though I admit the timing is quite... convenient), but I think you guys will be interested in knowing that MegaUpload has been shut down for illegal activities by American feds.
Wow that's crazy how they can just arrest people anywhere for running a site. This is really getting out of hand. Glad we have a trillion dollars worth of companies on our side (google, twitter, yahoo, huffington, wikipedia, etc). I think a bigger fight is going to break out soon; and ultimately justice prevails, ie people win and media companies will have to change their ways. Silly how they can control US govt so easily. Maybe Google should do more lobbying.
And I got nothing against media companies, just they need to get their act together and provide content for us better rather than arresting people to keep an antiquated system in place.
@ZealNaga: Go "piracy hub Megaupload" fucking CNN propaganda... who the fuck still reads or listens CNN anyway?
I don't like CNN either, I just found this link first when browsing. But anyway, CNN or not, MegaUpload is a piracy hub, they've been caught red-handed. The site was well-known for this, and it helped them gaining notoriety. If MegaUpload was so huge, it's mostly because people shared illegal content on it. And MegaUpload let them do. So yes, no matter what we think of CNN, the facts are here and MegaUpload was responsible. They're not a piracy hub that can be compared to The Pirate Bay, but still, they did allow piracy and even made money out of it. It's kind of silly to blame the law for doing its job... It just seem fair to me that they got caught, we knew from the very beginning it could happen because we knew what was going on there.
Still, it doesn't mean we have to agree about the site being closed, or SOPA being voted. And that's precisely why I'm kind of glad Anonymous took part in this. Like I said earlier I'm not that worried about SOPA anyway, because even if they have the law with them, anti-piracy groups can't do shit. The internet medias are way too quick and way too hard to control, by the time they shut something down it will be "cloned" elsewhere in the world and they won't be able to control it. Hackers will always find a way to bypass such things, if SOPA is voted they can already prepare themselves for a huge mayhem orchestrated by the hackers they're trying to stop. There's no way something like SOPA could last. It's not the first law trying to control internet and it won't be the last, and I'm pretty sure it will fail miserably just like the others.
@ZealNaga: Go
The facts that Megaupload has nothing to do with piracy. Its the uploaders who make the piracy and they are responsible.
With this logic I can say Gmail is piracy hub, because I used it many times to send pirated stuff to others.
Or you can say that the airline companies responsible for the contraband.
So seems like CNN propaganda was effective at you.
I hope Megaupload will go now rogue and for now on they wont comply with any copyright laws.
Off the topic of SOPA there are so many.. stupid... stupid.. comments about politics and governments in general.
True that politicians owe favors. They owe a lot of favors. They have always owed favors; as long as presidents have played a role in government (there was a period when they didn't). Our economy is one of the strongest. China is our rival, and I'm not entirely sure if anyone here knows the conditions in china, but I will assume you do. In terms of human rights, we aren't too high on the list. You wanna know where you can go for unlimited power? Somalia. then all you need is a lot of guns, and a lot of friends with guns. If you would like the ideal benefits of Switzerland, you need to taken into account that their population is MUCH smaller than ours, and they pay 64% of their income to taxes. Which personally, I wouldn't mind, considering what is offered in return.
It is easy to make one paragraph suggestions as to how a country should be managed. Really easy. All of our laws and rights are contradictions of each other. 50% of our politics hate 50% of the others. to get anything passes is pretty amazing really. Two party politics split the country. I think we have had higher than a 50% support rate for 2 presidents since vietname.
Bash on the mentality of Americans, bash their foreign policies, bash the fact that we are having a permanent Civil War with our politics, or bash lobbiests; but really, our governmental system is about as good as it gets for a population of this size. If we were a country of a solid mindset, it would be different. Always remember that half of us hate the other half. We are like Canada and French Canada. (I cant think of any Asian or European countries that are similar, without suggesting militaristic arms)
/end rant, SOPA never had a chance; and within 2 years, it will be back up.
our governmental system is about as good as it gets for a population of this size.
Thats pretty narrow minded.
Special if you think that founding fathers of USA would have never wanted that much centralized power.
And Switzerland is a good example for that, regional governments have big power there.
I've seen those graphs before and they basically say everything. It also keeps surprising me what a ridiculous amount of censorship there is in the USA, and what a ridiculous amount of utterly retarded people live there. You can basically google Mitt Romney and come to the conclusion that he's a complete sock puppet in about five minutes time. His life, his family, his entire HISTORY plays into that. Yet there's still an absurdly large amount of people who support him.
And then on the one hand we have Obama, with a bunch of 'average' sponsors, and on the other there's Ron Paul; the only candidate who REALLY wants to pull the army out, and who's top three contributors are the three departments of the army.
Which is why I included that little bit about "before presidents had power". Before Washington, there were many presidents who did nothing; because the founding fathers didn't want any centralized power. They wanted individual freedom for the states. It didn't take too long before they realized that was a huge flop, and they needed some general guidelines or else we wouldn't be the "United States" but the "Individual States". Obviously if they changed it within a generation, their first goals were not quite what were best for the country.
obama corrupt? phht... but i will agree with your first post... btw none of us know whats going on... and the tea party doesn't want to get along with anyone EVEN THEIR OWN PARTY! they are just using them like puppets. censorship is satanic.

I wish people would actualy check their facts. This quote someone from another forum describes the megaupload case.
"If you actually read the indictment against them, it wasn't about "users uploaded copyrighted material to their servers", they have internal emails where the people running the site talked about, among other things, giving financial rewards to some users for uploading in-demand copyrighted materials, and knowingly using the uploaded files themselves to obtain copyrighted materials. This isn't a case of the users doing something and the people running the site taking the flack, the people running the site, based on the evidence we have, appear to have been knowingly and specifically encouraging this behavior."
Perhaps you should read an article or two about it before spouting off garbage, otherwise your not adding anything to the conversation.

Here's a detailed article I found in English:

EDIT: ...And the immediate response from Anonymous (the famous hackers group fighting for internet freedom and freedom of speech) is mentioned here:

Megaupload is almost back: http://109.236.83.66/ I hope after this, they wont obey any copyright laws.
