How to be Polite
Overview
Looking at the average forum post, I have developed a sense of ungratefulness from the askers. In other words, this is what I have noticed. If an asker posts a question that has a proper answer, there is no response afterwards. If a question has an answer that the asker does not like, he responds by saying that it was not what he was looking for.
So what is the problem?
The problem is that if you have helped someone out, you deserve to be thanked! I answered a question, and realized it was a problem when I was so shocked to get a thank you in return. There are too many times that I answer a question without getting a thank you or some other acknowledgement.
Dude... Are you serious? Chill out and stop being a loser.
I would do that if this was a normal community. The SC2Mapser community is one that is respectful, kind, and productive. Simply letting the people who are taking their time to help you out know that you appreciate what they are doing goes a long way.
So all I need to do is say thanks? WHY IS THAT SUCH A BIG DEAL?!?!?
It is a big deal because it benefits everyone on the website. And no, saying thank you is NOT all you should do. Say why it helped and what worked and what the eventual problem was. This is what is going to help viewers in the future. If you say "Thank you this worked", and someone views the thread at a later date, they will know that the answer given is a good one that worked well!
This whole "Thank You" thing is too confusing! Are there any guidelines I should follow?
Yes.
Say whether the advice worked or didn't
If you tweaked a part of the advice, say what you did
Specify WHY you were asking the question
Be as specific as you can
Tell the person who answered the question what they can do to improve their answers in the future. Was their answer too complex? Too simple? Too many words? Poorly organized? Be as specific as you can!
BE NICE! Saying "Thank you so much! You really helped me out!" is better than "Cool."
If a response is NOT what you are looking for, ask POLITELY if they could rephrase their answer
TROLLING IS BAD (More details next section)
Trolling
People will troll, it is the way of life (Mephs, Vexal, etc). Realize that this is not a direct insult to you, it is just entertaining to the person who is doing to trolling. Trolling is bad, but is also not the focus of this thread. There is nothing we can do about trolling except ignore it, and even at times laugh when someone takes it seriously. No, the point of this thread is to focus on being grateful to people who take the time to answer your questions, and be as helpful to future viewers of your thread as possible.
Ending Note
If you figure out your own question, POST IT! Nothing is worse than searching the forums for something, finding the question you are looking for, and then finding there is no answer. If you discover the answer yourself, help out future users by posting the most detailed answer you have time for.
@ responses: what's weird is that you guys don't realize what the value/importance/scope of healthy example are?
Mankind (eternal lol at this word, since we are not kind) has been leaving traces (then writings and now virtual) for millennias..
"history is written by the victor"... that is something worth fighting against and churchill knew saying "it" would be useful.. that is why he did say it.. so as a corollary: humor or sarcasm is best left to adults (hint hint)!
Teens (and yes (kid teen adult) is (here) not a "real age" issue but an experience/stance/state of mind issue) should stick to pretty pictures and songs while some try to make a better place shine for us ALL (and i do <3 your pictures and songs).
I know how great feeling is when you have fought with data editor for 7 hours and then someone helps you to find the answer. So "thank you" is really deserved. That's why I'm trying to make tutorials and help people. Also when I have helped someone I hope that he responds to me so I know that my help was useful.
Oh and btw there is a difference between "giving you shit" and "not liking your methods". I think the threads you make are super useful (in fact I am guilty of referring to them on several occasions) I just think that there are some times you were a bit harsh to "noobs" you know? Don't get me wrong, I do post some "mixed feeling" posts. One is from the moral side and one is from the educational side. I think that your posts are great, but just a bit harsh.
Sorry if I ever offended you personally, that was not my intention in the slightest.
Did any of you guys consider that the word "step" has been colored for ages by the "aa" types of associations (associations: organisations run and hosted by job/pay-less people doing "good" on a communal to international level)... ?
Say you were guilty of any social misconduct while under the influence of.. whatever, (gf dumped you, you didn't get the job, you felt like shit.. you acted like a dweeb, you just needed to vent out, you needed your dose so you did what you had to do... etc...)..
well.. one of the first "recognized" step is to go back and apologize to the people you've offended.. it is called "assuming responsibility".. and in ALL cultures acknowledging one's past faults is considered (rightly so) as a sign of accomplishment...
ps: i wouldn't want to sound less brat than i am = so i'll troll a bit :) :
i disagree that one cannot/should not be forced to improve (bad seed need love too ;^p ) ... for instance i try to reform pausers playing on photon cycles.. i'm up to 3/4 (depending on which way the wind blows off course :) ) ... it is true that one has to sacrifice a lot of time, energy and personal hygiene to do it, but it's "all in a day's work for program control " (flying circus reference ... god i love monty!)
again thank you undercover taco, i love people that cry in the night, claiming the world as their own (my own favorite these days: "Eliza (galaxy's muze) where are you, give me faith in you or i'll commit to the worst i've got in me" ...

edit 2: thank you.
Good post Mr. Tacoman.
I know how great feeling is when you have fought with data editor for 7 hours and then someone helps you to find the answer. So "thank you" is really deserved. Thank you =)
@TacoManStan: Go
My signature is reserved for the IRC thank you.
IMO, you are a dick,
You give me shit for making these threads and low behold, here you are great sir, sounding exactly like me.
@DogmaiSEA: Go
Nah dude, it is all about how you do it.

I said you sound exactly like me, consider that a compliment.
And btw, in case some people think I am actually insulting him, there is nothing wrong with being a dick, everyone is a dick sometimes.
Don't take a joke between mates out of context nooblets, :)
Thank you for this guide, I'm most likely guilty of not saying TY on forums. So the whole community thanks you for the reminder.
This thread made me lol. In a positive, constructive, and thankful way.
IMO, trolling is what makes the internet fun.

@Mephs: Go

Great to be back and part of the community again!
