I was running an Amd 3400 with 2 gigs of ram and all I could load was the trigger editor, the data editor would lag it out ... the new comp is an i7 930, 12 gigs of low-lat ram running off an SSD and I am extremely happy with my load times. A second compared to a minute or so before -_-. I do find that map loading is faster off the SSD rather than the Raid 10 which I use for backups, but the Raid 10 is still fast enough.
There is no real upgrade I can recommend rather than starting from scratch with a new comp.
I have a gaming PC with a great graphics card and processor, 3GB of ram, and classic 7200rpm hard disks.
I bought a laptop for map editing, and it has a slower processor, same ram, but its running with an SSD hard drive. Let me tell you, that thing is fast! When I test a map on my laptop it has much lower graphical settings and frame rate than my gaming PC, but it loads the map up much faster. You'll be testing maps a lot, so you want to cut down on those load times. SSD is a great technology, but it is very expensive for the storage space you get.
I also run a SSD for my operating system and wow + sc2. I hate waiting for the things I do often to load, everything else I chuck on my 500GB black WD drive, and then I have a 1 TB green WD drive for storage.
CPU only does so much, but if you have a slow HDD, the CPU is pointless, it will only end up doing more things at once faster.
If you have win 7. use the inbuilt tester.

My computer loads slowly but plays great.
Its just too bad i only have a 128k modem and cant play multi-player games properly.
Please have a nice day.
oh and here is a great quote from me.
Too err is human.
but to really Fuck it up you need a computer.

I'm tired of SC2 taking so long to load my map and galaxy taking long to load modules. What would be the best upgrade I should consider?
Better (faster) HDD.

7200 rpm sata drive, still think so?
@jmac321wky: Go
No.
SSD. I run a 50gb SSD just with Win7 + Sc2. All other stuff on the raid.

In addition to above, use common sense.
A computer is only as fast as it's slowest component.
investments should never spring eternal
