Hey guys! Let’s have some good time together, let’s do a themed mapping event. We set a theme and in coming month create a map, not for popularity, not for the masses, but purely for the lols (and self-growth).
The end product doesn’t need to be polished, or deep, or shackled by the cursed replayability factor. All it needs is to be playable for at least 10-15 minutes, so that we could check each other’s works and think to ourselves – “that’s cool”, or “that’s cute”, or “interesting”, or just “:3”
I too have a main project right now, but I oftentimes find myself lacking motivation to do anything. I know I want to make that awesome map and thus I keep pushing myself towards the vision, slowly exhausting the poor me. So step aside, focus on something fresh to gain a new perspective on the things you do, acquire additional flexibility and dismiss the tunnel vision you’ve fallen in while working vigorously on your precious.
But, playing in sandbox all by yourself isn’t too fun. I want someone with me. I want to see how different people approach and handle same objective.
The theme of this one would be “retro tribute/inspiration”. I’ve been playing some of the older games recently, and have experienced lots of sweet sugary feelings of joy and nostalgia. The idea is that you’ll need to pay a visit to some of your oldest friends, and see what they can show you. I’m not asking for a remake, or for a “worthy tribute”. It can be as simple as incorporating an element of old game (elements/ideas of some platformer for example) into a completely new environment (like TD or survival). It’s about the process and where it drives you. Another way to get to know ourselves better.
Aye? Nay? Are there any likeminded individuals here who would like to try this out with me?
No need to drag it out, let's try to finish it around this years last week (24-30th of dec.)
This is kinda exciting, looking forward to see what you'll pick and how it'll go for you. If you want, you can announce what you'll be doing but my own style is secrecy until it's ready. I don't believe that there is any need for another more official thread, so everything goes here.
I already feel the ideas shaping into something amusing. Let's see if I succeed in transforming visions into reality :3
I think there was something like that organized a while back already... I remember a map in which various members of our forums took part, each creating a little arena (some of which were quite nice). In the end, there was something like 36 arenas in a single map file... I have absolutely no clue what happened to the map (it's a shame really), but as far as I know, it was supposed to be a community-oriented project as well.
Anyway, I love the idea (retro gaming, YES!)... I can't really join you right now though, I have other important matters to deal with lately. I just wish this project will not suffer the same fate as the previous project. Maybe the first step would be to name a few retro games people would wish to see converted to a SC2 map, just to keep the inspiration coming! :)
Pacman, Double Dragon, Micro Machines, Duck Hunt, Punch Out,... You name it!
Pacman, Double Dragon, Micro Machines, Duck Hunt, Punch Out,... You name it!
Arcanoid, Paratrooper, Digger, Battle City, Death Track, F1 race, Scorched Earth, Snake Rattle and Roll, Gobliins... Also fly and shoot genre like Tyrian, run and shoot with Zelda-like top view genre.

That map is not forgotten, Don't worry I am sure you will see it again, I went through an extremely busy stage about a month after that finished, It still exists
Hhhmmm interesting, but since I barely have time to work on my projects and everything else I support, I know I can't participate.
May I suggest a different idea? Mainly because I'd like to get it started: What about "open source" maps? Like a mapper attaches the map he's been working on (and doesn't have the time to do it by himself) then someone else improves it (following guidelines for what the map is suppsoed to be) and then attaches it to his post... We could have a handful of maps improved this way.
It WAS supposed to work with the community project #2 but then we had few people working on it and all became too busy (me included).
Have a compelling idea that you think would be fun to work on and not require much time? It's a tricky one and I'm having hard times thinking what could be done other than puzzles/minigames collab.
@DuckyTheDuck: Go I don't think so. One of my "abandoned" projects right now is the Blizzard Kidzz april's fool idea. I was going to make some of those game playable in a map, like the Zergling Teaches Typing, and others, just for the lulz. But the whole idea is based on dialogs and lots of triggers, and this is the part of the editor I'm unfamiliar with. I've been working on the art a lot though, and I could make it look awesome if I had help.
What little time I have I am spending on developing new data editing techniques. My data only walker is near beta and once debugged will make for some awesome bosses for the community project.

Well as of Zolden and My understanding the author suggest to remake retro game by YOUR OWN and SUGGESTIONS mostly will be just for yourself to recreate i guess.
Once you know dialogs they're not hard at all, still as timeconsuming though (HotS UI editor promises to change that). But if you want to finish that game, make a very detailed description of what exactly is what you want from dialogs, if people know exactly what they need to do they're more likely to do it, if anything I know I'll take a look. For me the most bothersome thing about dialogs is finding/adjusting images/backgrounds, but if you're planning to make all the art, it should be piece of cake to make the rest.

Let me clarify, imagine: there is a cool old game you know, it’s so cool that you want to make something like that. This one is about what that old game compels you to do.
Maybe you have kindest memories of Battle City and you just want to completely recreate it in sc2. Do it! Or maybe you really liked the mechanics behind Lost Vikings and now want to try to make some sort of puzzle-adventure game with similar approach. Or you just played Shatterhand and think that smashing bullets with your bare fist is so good that that mechanic should be incorporated in sc2 map. The theme is: what it drives you to do, which is different for everyone.
If that game is special to you maybe you too would like join us? It doesn’t need to be a completed map, just a game with 3-4 levels will suffice, how far you want to go with it is completely up to you.
How about a remake of the game jetpack? Maybe a variation where it's coop and includes a map editor :P. This video might jog your memories if you've played this awesomely creative game

Yeah, I'd like to participate! Especially when you're talking about retro remakes!
Definitely! I have had this idea for a long time, just never kicked it off. But now that you've done so, I am more than happy to participate :)
Wonderful, let's get started then.

I can't seem to find these community projects. Can someone direct me to'em?

My remake project will be Patrician Trade Simulation game.
Main concept of the gameplay will try to recreate is the trade between locations, cities.
