So I've poked around with a few tutorials and found most of them honestly aren't that good. here's the one I've found to be the most straightforward and am currently referencing:
I've created my "unit" and the corresponding "actor" thing, and have linked the "actor" to the unit from where it says Token on the actor tab. However, this tutorial has different fields than I have (maybe it's old?) and even though I can place my unit on a map, it won't talk, move or do anything really. If someone can direct me from here that would be awesome.
Yay :) I wrote that tutorial ages ago.. sorry I never got around to finishing it. You are right in assuming it is old. Back when I wrote it, it was for the SEN Wiki, but that has merged with a lot of other SC2 wiki editing sites it seems.
Under Actor, you need to give the unit it's associated sound sets. Hope this helps :)
Thanks. So I manually have to replace every sound clip on the "Sounds - Group Sounds" and "Sounds - Sounds" field to make it match up with the marine? Seems awfully tedious.
Also, it says "For those with keen observational skills - you will notice that our Marine has no attack, he cannot move and only has 1 hit-point." I don't see this listed anywhere, what orange button do I need enabled to find and edit this information?
So I've put some of the basic commands on the command card (like move, patrol, and attack) but they don't show up on the unit's command card in-game. Is there another step?
If I am honest, most of the time when I create a unit - I 'base' it off of another existing unit. Usually a well known one such as the Marine. This way, when I look at the unit object I can easily distinguish what still needs to be changed...
Combat - Weapon: Gauss Rifle will need to be changed to the custom weapon that my unit is going to use.
Abilities - will show Stimpack, and Move, Attack, Hold Position etc so I can just edit the ones I want to remove.
Stats - will show the 40hp no shields, no energy etc so I can change that according to the new unit I want.
Hope this helps! Also, hangout in the SC2Mapster IRC channel, plenty (sometimes) of help available in there.
Thanks Nardival, you it's pretty difficult to find good tutorials out there, my biggest ally has definitely been this site. I will definitely check out the IRC channel. I'm not an IRC regular, maybe you can give me some more details on that channel?
Also maybe you can give me more details how to "base a unit" on something else, and I'm not sure what to do from the Abilties > Fields submenu, I'm staring at an ability list that doesn't have my unit or actor. Do I create new abilities for my custom unit?
Damn you and your over-complication, Galaxy Editor!!
No, under the Units data tpye at the far top is a field called Ability - Abilities - Ability. Any ability your unit want to use must be there. Command card buttons linked to abilities the unit cannot use will not show. If you have abilities in that field that are not linked to the command card, they can still be activated via Issue Order effects.
If you set your data editor to the standards found here, with any copied data type you find the altered fields in green/blue, these can be useful for highlighting what you might want to alter. I advise you start reading the wiki, it has more than enough info to make a complex unit like a broodlord from scratch.
I put some abilities in the Abilty: Abilities - Ability tab that were also present on the command card (namely, "Move" and "Attack") but the units could neither do anything by explicit command nor automatically when placed on the map. You mentioned "linking" the abilities, is that the step I'm missing? How do I do that? I read the galaxy/data/units wiki but I didn't know exactly what I was looking for because there was just so much information. If you could at least direct me to a section of that article that would be very helpful. Thanks!
While I'm at it let me also ask this: why does double-clicking on any menu item under the Ability: Command Card field (like, Ability: Command Card - Buttons - Face) bring me to the exact same menu? Why are there 12 fields that each appear to do the same thing (take me to the command card menu)?
With some parts of the data editor they are hard coded to bring up a window containing all the stuff. This can be problematic on rare occasions but can be overcome by viewing the fields in raw data mode. By linking I meant add the ability to the unit co to the command card, make a button, select the Ability Command command type, select your ability and then select the right ability command for your ability.
Check the flags of the unit under the Units data type that it does not have the uncommandable/unselectable flag enabled. To attack the unit needs both the Attack ability and a Weapon. To move the unit needs the Move ability, a Mover and speed, acceleration and turning values that are greater than 0. Also make sure it does not have a footprint because those lock the unit to the map grid like buildings.

Under the Units data type you need to give it the move and attack abilities. You also adjust the hp and starting hp there.

Wow that tutorial is rubbish :D
Yes - the Abilities > Field requires filling out.

Feel free to pm me as there is very little in the data editor I do not know. Also I have some experience in making tricky stuff.
