The title might be a little misleading, but here goes;
I want to create an ability that spawns 5 baneling unit (the roling baneling) circling around a the casting unit, and explodes upon contact with an enemy unit, dealing damage in a raduis.
The banelings should persist for 7 seconds, after which they would explode.
The banelings should circle around the caster, and keep a constant location (meaning that if the main unit moves, the banelings should move coresponding to that, and still keep their rotating location).
Can this be done with data (if yes, how would I do it?) or should I use triggers?
So it could be a purely actor based visual like the colossus beam impact.
I would recommend having a buff that applies a persistent effect that has periodic effects that move in a circle x3. The periodics have a Site (Mover) that follows them like the colossus weapon. You then use a SOp (Forward Vector) to get the banelings to always face the caster before rotating them 90 degrees with a SOp (Explicit Rotation).
Only issue with this would be if the unit turns fast the banelings would follow with the turn creating a clunky visuals and not working in the correct areas. This could be fixed by having a hidden unit with the Turnable flag diasbled that uses an Apply Force effect to follow the caster point that uses the previously mentioned system.

Nope, it would most likely work like a missile - It could be anything, the baneling is only to apply to the theme of the casting unit.
