Another week starts, and so does another Terraining Exercise! Following up on a theme we had three weeks ago, I thought that aside from 'outposts', and interesting theme would be the 'Listening Post'! This week I'm not looking for simple lookout towers, but rather for facilities of espionage, radar fields and generally some kind of spy-base that looks like it's performing within the more grey areas of our morals. Let's see what you guys make of this, and remember; I'm watching you! ;)
I'd rather people look at the map for themselves because taking screenshots of this thing is kinda annoying, I can't keep the radar in view without all the shadows of the cave-base disappearing, I dunno how to fix that. It does have antenna and radars and stuff, I swear! :]
Tried control+zoom out? Shadows only show at a certain max camera distance though, I think. Anyway, love that - another one of those terrains I'll have a stab at making it playable. The view from the angle on the screenshot below is the one that gets me most. It's literaly depth in terrains that makes them look so awesome, and SC2 can do this.
That radio and the two turrets are also storymode models? Overall pretty nice, though I think you went a little overboard on the storymode; you might want to grab a couple of 'regular' doodads and spice up the area around the listening post a bit. Mostly natural things seem to be missing; some vegetation, more crystals and some more rocks might do the trick.
Have you tried
A) those huge ass wayboard-pillars currently standing on the platforms, scaled down majorly
or
B) those huge ass space station pillars currently holding your platforms up, scaled down majorly
?
They're a little busy, they could work, but if you were zoomed in enough you'd see all the other struts and things to it, and it wouldn't make much sense.
Hmmm... It's a shame wood won't work, else you'd be able to go full metal window boards on its ass. There has to be something, though? Basically anything metallic looking could be scaled down to size to work.
Also, it took me three different looks to notice the euphemism you've hidden east of the Goliath. In your defense, *not* making that shape is actually a pretty hard job. I'm not afraid to say that one of the major struggles of terraining for me is making sure that there aren't a payload of subliminal penises accidentally hidden in my map.
Really like the spiky rocks, you could try Mar Sara Blackened Rock as a texture under them though, it might fit them better, as it is now the rocks are much darker than the ground. Also the far back mountains seem a bit lazy compaired to the rest. And how the hell did you manage to flip that radar dish? Did you do some purdy Sit ops editing or is it a separate model?
I was intentionally going for some contrast with black rocks on bright sand (and the rocks were also the last thing I added, after most of the texture work was done - no texture slots free).
The radar dish is a model attachment on top of a supply depot, which I then sunk into a big crater (It takes a pretty big crater to sink a 10x scaled radar dish to the rim). Lots of crazy SiteOp hijinks to make it do what it does - would be so much nicer if you could just throw SOps on doodads...
The building on the side of the dish is covering the hole where the base of the dish is sticking out to the side.
It's good, but the smoke around the disk and the waterfall seem a bit... I dunno... they just stand out too much? Maybe it's your intention with this shot, but the waterfall looks far too bright. That being said, I do love the angle and the floating islands - nice touches there.
Well, why do you think i didn't get done until this weeks exercise started? ;) In all honesty though i enjoyed it too much to care, it is only the "boring" part that actually feels like it is taking time IMO.

Weekly Terraining Exercise #76

Good luck, and have fun!

Internet is being a douche today... Heres my submission.

Yeah, I figured as much. I suppose it's my fault for making things to scale. :(
I also couldn't find a good model to use for railings on the walkway, which it is why it's protocol-breakingly unsafe.

IT'S A HEAVY WALKWAY OKAY? :P

Also, I stole your screenshot idea, thx :)
Crap I never finished last week's map.

It's a shame the metal walls have lasers/electricity instead of metal, because that would work.
That wasn't intentional, but funnily enough it did cross my mind when I was using typhon rocks :P
There are actually a lot of really stupid unintentional errors in the map, too late now though I suppose.
In every WTE I've submitted I always put two crows together. Not that it makes sense on shakruas, but it's a trademark :]
I ran out of inspiration for little details on my rooftops and decided to throw this one out there as it is.
Figured I'd do another desert since I haven't made one in about forever. Was going into sand withdrawals.

WHO NEEDS LISTENING POSTS WHEN YOU HAVE LAZOR SHARKS?
jk
Hey putting such a big dish in the middle of Bel'shir forest is suspect, even for the dominion, no ?

Indeed it catches the eye but thanks for your feedback !
Just something i was fiddling around with:

I like it.
How many hours did it take to line those paths with decals? :)
