since the difficult stuff on my main project is done, i decided to start a new map project that i had in mind for some time now.
the game idea is simple and based on a "indie" game from about 8 years ago called - Stranded.
that game had also a sequel called Stranded2, and i just think this is an awesome that needs to be "re-done" with a multiplayer touch inside of StarCraft2.
in Stranded you are a human character that is simply stranded on an "lonely" island.
ou were aboard a ship that had an accident and sunk, and were washed up onto a shore of some island.
point of the game will be, to leave the island and find you way back into society.
you'll have to eat, drink, find a safe place to spend the night and defend yourself against all kinds of stuff.
Features?
the main feature will be the combining of all kinds of stuff you would think about if you were really washed up on a lonely island.
find some sticks, combine them with a liane and you got an fishing rod to find some fish to eat. find a nail thats probably washed up and you have an fishing hook to improve your rod, and find bigger fish.
thats a simple example, but you can think of basically anything that makes sense in a way you would create in such an situation.
you'll create a hut or a fence, build a little "base camp" with your teammates and defend against all kind of creatures.
soon you're able to build a boat and take your chances on the ocean to find your way back.
Ideas?
what i need is ideas and feedback.
what do you guys think about the idea of such an game? how good could it be realized in a good multiplayer way?
it would need a randomized island on every game, random events like possible natives that live anywhere on that island or special creatures and things like that.
also it would have a time of day change triggering special events, making camp fires and torches important etc.
what kinds of tools, items, food, enemies, events etc.. would be possible?
im happy about all kinds of feedback.
also if anyone is interested in joining this project just send me a PM
kind regards,
PatchOne
PS: i know that my english sucks, and im sorry about that. but i hope you were able to read most of it and get what this game will be about.
sounds cool :D Might be fun in multiplayer. Perhaps some players could be on an enemy team? So there are like 3 'tribes' of players. And they wouldn't interact too much (because the island is big and they would be far away from each other to start) but obviously there would be more competition for resources. Theres only so much wood, meat, fruit, etc...

oh thats an good idea to bring some competetive stuff in the game. nice!
what im thinking about right now is, in what perspective the game would make the most sense.
the "original" game is a first person styled game but i saw so much problems regarding fps issues on any first person styled SC2 game lately that im not sure about it...
Top-down view for sc2 is still currently the best. Any elaboration on using a boat and getting back?
edit : I think it'd also be rather cool if there was some sort of techtree to choose from.
eg. What would your source of food be? Fishing? -> Fishing rod, fishing nets, bait etc
Hunting? -> Bows & arrows, traps, laser guns
Vegetarian? -> Farm
Well, who says that we need to follow the same ol' game? For some inspiration, take a look at w3's Island Troll Tribes
In summary, it's also a survival map where players are split into groups called 'tribes', each on their own individual islands connected via shallow areas.
There's a day/night cycle involving wild beasts roaming around the map. For the first few days, the team's main priorities would be to find a nice camping spot and start gathering materials. The following few days would be building themselves up followed by an all-out war against the other tribes. The last tribe standing obviously wins (and will be forever alone).
Might've missed some other stuff but that's the gist of it.
The downsides of that map were it's incredibly slow pace and horrific resource system. I'd heartily suggest taking a look at that map if you have WC3 laying around because your proposal is near identical to the above and seeing some of the pitfalls they ran into could help you.
i see. that is basically the same idea but kinda.. weird executed.
hmm..
i played that troll tribes and its weird.. the resources are randomly placed just on the ground, right? kill animals and stuff makes sense but then its very different from what i had in mind.
the idea was an realistic approach..
like if there is a little bush you can search in it for sticks, leafes and probably some berries. if there is a tree you can look for sticks too (but not that much), lianes and some fruits - if you got an axe youre able to chop it down and use the wood to create heavier stuff etc...
basically like, the resources come where they really come from.
also i dont like all these abilities - the idea is being stranded, you are exhausted and try to fight for your life at first, then build primitive weapons to ensure you stay alive and then - whatever might be the best - but you dont have bloodlust or ensnare and stuff like that.. you would have to build one net, and if you use it you have to retreive it afterwards.
i also thought about making 2 gamemodes..
1 like "singleplayer" where a player or more players can just play in 1 team on a very difficult island and try to survive.
the other one the competetive one, but dont know how exactly.. the tribes stuff with some improvements probably
I personally never liked Island Troll tribes because if you couldn't find the item you were looking for you'd plain simply die, reviving teammates was hard aswell and often items spawned in the water or on unreachable areas. Your own idea is possibly a bit similar but if you execute it differently it could be alot more fun, I've done a game on wc3 once where you had to survive in a dark haunted forest similar to island troll tribes, but the way you got resources was alot better. You could use wood and make sticks to burn coal and then make a fireplace that lasts longer than regular wood etc.
if you want to make it both starcraft-y and with a competitive edge why not try introducing another faction which has the "boat off the island"
so basicly your a little probe which is having to fight the other probes in order to win the uberprobes aproval to get home or you can try and take fight to the "boat" at which point the other "tribe" would win a lot of aproval for killing you
i thought about something similar, a native race that is kinda.. "stupid and aggressive", worship a structure as a god figure - that is actually a boat^^
so you have to fight that race and steal their "god statue" - that would be funny, like in a movie.
@PatchOne: Go
I like that. Instead of a boat, make it a giant battlekruiser. Makes much more sense why they're worshiping something like that. edit : OH. Now for the end game of getting off the island, how about
1. Gathering materials/parts in order to steal the battlecruiser and fix it (Might make those natives hostile)
2. Cooperating with the natives and coming to an agreement of some sort to give that statue to you.
As stated above, island troll tribes would leave you dead if you couldn't find a specific material. So why not in Stranded, make it so that there'll be several different ways to get around each task
eg. For warmth ( If there will even be warmth ), you could get it from 1. A fire(Made from flammable stuff & wood) 2. Animal fur(Made from killing wild beasts) 3. A tent(Made from dirt, sticks, leaves etc, but gives the least warmth)
Also, to keep true to the realistic part, why not give them abilities that they could obtain from there?
Taking from my first post in this thread,
If you have a bow and arrow, ability -> fire arrow/flare. For flare, shoot a fire arrow into the sky (Or gunpowder) to scare away wild beasts.
If you go for something like farming, then you'll get an ability of identifying plants(Able to make poison/potions)
about the abilities.. these will be either in a custom UI dialog based thingy, or based on the items i think. but sure there will be actions you can do.
about the boat.. being a spaceship, i dont know..
i thought more about a non space game, youre not stranded on a planet, you are stranded on an island, you're an earthling and dont have space things...
the worship symbol could actually be something like a motor that you would need because the waves are too strong and would drag you towards the island (seen cast away with tom hanks?)
its your choice i was just throwing an idea out, but the thing you might want to remember is that your going to need custom models if you want to do a non starcraft version which would take a lot longer to do
For the perspective, I'd vote for top down unless you decide to do this single player. If its single player, lag wont be a problem and you can do third or first person.

it will be multiplayer, so top down is the way to go.
i have a small question about some technical stuff..
the terrain should be "randomly created" - at least stuff on the island, to make the game not the same everytime (you really have to search several things again etc..)
how would that be realized? the surface can stay the same but everything else really needs to be randomized in some way..
about the game system i thought something like this:
every "resource" will be a unit - trees etc. units with the model of a tree. (because theire targetable)
the player has a basic "search" function that targets something - if he targets a tree, bush, well whatever, the search is channeled and he finds something random after its finished.
if the player has some tools created, like an axe, a pickaxxe or something, he will have a skill to use this tool onto the resource unit (like axe on tree, obviously) to find different/better/more things.
ideas or improvements?
resources would be available everywhere, but rare stuff like some ore or whatever would be harder to find, but not necessary to keep yourself alive.
For randomly created, I suppose just set x number of trees to spawn within that region. I'm wondering whether it's possible to make random cliff&ramps appear on the map as well.
good evening people.

well im not really sure about the boat thingy.
the main game´s goal was to build a boat and try your luck on the ocean.
probably if there is some competetive play, there will be some race to a special material or something like that from what the boat is built of.
have to figure that out.. who knows, probably there wont be a boat at all.. i dont know^^

edit: another link http://www.thehelper.net/forums/showthread.php/26525-Island-Troll-Tribes-Experiences where the players discuss about the game. The only main problem would be that newbies wouldn't survive in that game.

just wanted to bump this, nearly forgot about it.
if anyone is interested in joining this map-idea i would consider starting to work on it.
so, i am still alone but i think i am starting to work out some "proof of concept" tonight.
if anyone is interested in helping with anything (ideas, triggers, data - whatever) just tell me an we'll see what we can do.
