I'm up for making 1-2 macro maps. I think I've gotten pretty decent at using the AI editor in my Mapsters series (see missions 1-3).
I think we should set realistic finishing timelines for each map. Enough to give plenty of time to make a map, without being forever. This certainly could be a project to complete in 1-2 years in total. So I was thinking maybe giving each person 1-2 months to make their map, then an extra 1-2 weeks as people bug/balance tested. Once that finished, the map would be considered done.
Wow fast work haha. My maps usually take me at least 2 weeks. I'm currently looking for work, had a second interview today. Fingers crossed as it seemed like a great place. They said they start people in January. So if I did get that job, I'd be free through December.
Probably a good idea anyway, but for example, I have no clue as to what allies Subject 1115 will be gathering apart from other hybrid. Surely there's not enough hybrid to make them any more than just heroes and major units, right?
Yeah, there are so far only 5 types (+several hero units) which is not nearly enough. That said, it would be very cool if your allied hybrid could evolve after reaching certain amount of kills (or smth else?): reavers into Castanar=like types (bigger model and ability for temporal invulnerability), then into LotV behemoths; destroyers into Maar-like type (with bonus abilities and bigger model), then into LotV dominators (with more abilities and new model). It would make player cherish each unit much more than usually. Probably their stats have to be tweaked, though
Hybrids may seek control over independent zerg tribes, certainly there are some left and zerg should not be hard to dominate after killing their broodmother. But mission where you have to stuff similiar what Maar did in order to make enslaved protoss attack terrans (those who pursue you through missions?), so that they blame them in vile strike and start to fight protoss, letting you escape their attention
More importnant question is whats their ultimate goal...
We could have them dominate/mind control small groups of Terran/zerg and maybe even some Protoss would want to work with them. Perhaps there's a made up protoss tribe that worships hybrid.
@SiarX: Go We are not limited to the hybrid units from the campaigns. ;-)
@MaskedImposter: Go I think the worshipers idea again is boring. In my opinion the point is to make them different from what they were, so less aggressive in dominating other groups.
So far with the way that I've taken the story and how I think it'll influence future contributors is that the hybrid, no longer under the control of Amon, now have a sense of freedom. With their newly discovered freedom, I think the hybrid feel the need to maintain that feeling and I doubt they would enslave another race any time soon. Some among them may have lingering Amon culture, so it's Subject 1115's job to keep them in line, but who knows how long that will last...
Well I just hope you add plenty of assets to make a hybrid base then. Cuz making whole new races will explode the amount of work to be done :P. If there aren't when it's my turn to make a map, then I'll probably use the existing races. Of course, they could always make friends with existing factions rather than dominate them.
Personally, I think the hybrid should gather allies instead and use them as the source of macro and the hybrid could come from the main structure or some separate structure that produces hybrid specific units. Obviously some of the hybrid will be given to the player instead, but it's up to future contributors. I, personally, enjoy playing and making commando/installation missions the most and that's what I've studied and it's what I excel at. If I were to contribute with additional levels, I'd make those.
Creating the whole faction would be very long and complex process indeed. Thats why I suggested dominating over some zerg broods (since hybrids are very tough and obiously very expensive but their damage does not really correlate with their toughness - though dominators compensate it by their special abilities. Thats why they are supposed to be tanks in faction which has cheap dpsers... like original zerg). They need some sort of weak, massable ally to be competitive. Like enslaved zerglings. Or 3rd way - to make them all weaker and cheaper, which however doesnt make much sense lorewise. Here there are some possible concepts for hybrid faction: http://www.sc2mapster.com/forums/general/general-chat/59101-fourth-race-idea-hybrids/#p1
@yukaboy: Go Some specific structures would be nice. It makes me think about all the Moebius stuff we've seen, specially things like the use of Pylons attached to Terran tech. For a training structure I think we can start with the Science Facility in the case of Terran allies.
@SiarX: Go Not all are so powerful, the Flashpoint book describes 3 other types that were weaker. The ones in the campaigns happen to be the most successful experiments. Considering Zerg genetic diversity, hybrids could be anything.
GhostNova had a Hybrid campaign in mind and he created some models for the units. I wonder where his project stands now and if he'd be interested in this one.
@SiarX: Go Two of them together were killed by de-infested Kerrigan, the third was also killed by her, and she was still recovering. So yeah, I'd say weaker than an Ultralisk.
I don't think it would be too challenging to include other, normal races either. I don't think anyone would rush to this random Hybrid's defense, but if the Hybrid stumbles upon an existing battle and sides with some disaffected, made up faction, then they become allies moving forward.

Heck it could even be some sort of pirates or something that just want to use the hybrid for its power. To help them raid ships n stuff. That'd be another possible micro mission (raiding a ship for its cargo with terran pirate backup). If this hybrid is essentially a newborn, I don't think it would immediately know any sort of right from wrong. In the beginning it could even mind control some people without really knowing what it's doing.
I wouldn't want these hybrid to act like babies, so I'm avoiding the newborn idea, but I am allowing for a sense of naive nature. These characters don't understand the cultures or factions of others, only that they're friendly or unfriendly. In terms of speech especially, these guys are at the same level as any other species out there, just look at Maar.
I think you two are thinking along the same lines. The thing won't talk like a literal child, but it will be fairly naive and take things at face value without understanding complexity. If some pirates offer to help it with an obvious, underlying motive of capturing it later, it will probably just accept their help - then BAM, there's a reason to be able to also use Terran for a mission. There doesn't need to be huge amounts of headcannon to justify that sort of stuff as long as it's not over the top ridiculous I think.

Hmm, allies? More like aforementioned pirates would be willing to use them to deal with their enemies. But since even pirates know that "all hybrids are bad", and they know nothing about human relationships, later they would be in nasty surprise when pirates decide to "sell" them to nearest Dominion base (or someone else)...
@JayborinoPlays: Go Keep in mind they are telepaths, they are able to sense emotions and intentions, and they are probably better at it than Ghosts or Protoss. But I do agree we don't need to be so obsessed about it.

Great idea. My map will be finished tomorrow minus the testing and polish.

Very nice to see such topic and that many people approve this concepts While I am not mapmaker, I would be more than happy to share ideas and thoughts

Yeah, for example Void thrasher would make very unusual tower imho. And that void portals...
How much weaker though? On the level of Utter Darkness or even lower?

The internal testing phase of level 1 have begun. It is 100% functional. Only testing and polish phases remain.
