I don't need someone else to tell me whether or not its awesome before I start thinking its awesome. I have been forming my own opinions about things for a long time now and I don't intend to stop now. I was very impressed with the video when I saw it completed, as I am impressed with what we have achieved in so far with Tofu. I tell you right now I knew we would get some negative feedback on the Impressed part at the end, but that's ok, my feelings aren't hurt and neither are Dogmai's. You guys are absolutely entitled to your own opinions, and the right to express them, but that means we are too, and we proudly expressed ours with the Trailer.
Nobody is blaming you for being proud. Heck, I'm proud of my "The Turning" map (link underneath name) while technically it isn't at all interesting in terms of replayability, or revolutionairy at all. I think most people are just annoyed with the way you are presenting your map. You're shoving "This is a good map" in their face. That irritates people, as while you might have your own opinion on your product, people don't really care. They'll form their own once they've had their hands on it. Imagine if Nike started releasing shoe types with the slogan "Our shoes are so awesome, aren't they?" - wouldn't that annoy you? It's the forcing opinions upon people that's the problem, not you being proud on your map.
I totally understand bro, and yes TMA will be a challenge to balance but thats ok because all pvp games are. Don't worry though there is no healing really in Tofu except the healing powerups you can run over to pick up. Other than that there are 3 ultimates out of 18 that can produce healing effect, and only one of them can heal anyone other than the caster and thats Wydow and if she heals herself its reduced by 50% than if she were to heal an ally, but its also a nuke she can smack an enemy with, since it is an ulti though it has a hefty cooldown to counter its power. Violences can heal himself with his ultimate as well you will see in the video and his is dependant on their being multiple enemies around him to be effective which is adverse to healing yourself as it kinda makes you a bit of a target, and Pyro's heal requires him to be damaging himself also, which requires him to be above 30% life also so once he has dropped under 30% no more heal for him.
So you see theres really very little and very conditional healing in Tofu other than what is available for anyone to simply walk over before the next guy, I played a lot of WoW arena also and even more Warsong Gulch so I know the ramifications of having healers running around, and I didnt want whether or not this teams got a healer and that one doesn't to be such a major factor in victory.
Who doesnt like bursty damage? hehe crits r fun. But you are right it requires balancing, but I prefer it that way really, I would rather a hero produce a range of dps rather than 1 constant amount, as it adds variance and a certain un-knowability about the outcome of a fight, which to me is the way it should be, everyone should go into a fight believing they are going to win thats just a given for success but the actual outcome should not be decided before the fight has happened.
When I say I knew we would get some negative feedback I was thinking along the lines of people saying yeah you shouldn't have done that, or heh that was a bit cocky but not that some people would actualy appear to get truly angry over it, or be put off. If we thought it would put people off just on the basis that one of the last images is a bit cocky or arrogant then we wouldnt have done it.
Ah. Well, I hope people are willing to look past it and give the map a try. People can be very sensitive about what they see as arrogance, negativity, etc. They don't take the time to try to understand what people actually mean, just judge them based on some sort of set of norms. Thinking highly of yourself seems to be a definite no-no. But oddly enough so is having no self-esteem at all. I suppose mediocrity is what we should all strive for?
Having rather poor social skills, I've experienced people disliking me for no apparent reason, other than not being able to read their minds, I guess. At least on the Internet people tell you when they have a problem, instead of talking behind your back or using stupid euphemisms. How you react to that blunt criticism says a lot about your character, and from what I've seen you've handled it well. But I could go on an on with social commentary. I'll just wish you luck with your map, and leave it at that.
Holy American accent, Dryeyece! If you could sound any more American an eagle donning cowboy boots would come flying out of my screen, wrap me up in the star-sprangled banner and assault me with falcon punches while reciting the constitution =P
That's sure stereotypical. There are so many different dialects in the US. I'm an American, and I sound nothing like that.

If you're a "nerd" and don't follow social customs, people will tend to dislike you for no reason. I'm not assuming anything about you; when someone has poor hygiene, it is hard for most people (including myself) to stand to be around said person. That's an example of a situation where someone doesn't have to do anything to anyone to be disliked.
Dryeyece, I didn't really say much in my last post, other than expressing that I would like to test Tofu. It looks really interesting to me, and looks like it could be a lot of fun (at least Waterforts Arena). The mod looks very well polished.
I understand confidentiality very well. I'm very interested in you're project, and would really enjoy the opportunity to help refine it.
Thank you, and beta is creeping ever closer I am probably going to start a seperate thread with each persons name who has expressed interest at the top, and give it a day or so for more people to sign up just before beta starts so we can keep it as organized as possible once it gets going.
I don't understand what Christianity has to do with any of this...errr... what just happened. For the record, I am a Christian.
Anyways, I was simply trying to point out to ya a couple flaws in your marketing campaign. That's all dude. As I said, you can take our collective advice or leave it. I was personally /really/ excited when I saw all this hype for a project, as perhaps this could be a big project to give the mapping community a name, and some real credibility.
Just dissapointed is all. Remember, you specifically asked us if we are impressed in your video. I've never seen another promo video for a map or mod, ever, ask that. I'm merely responding to your question.
Like I said, a bit of modesty goes a long way. Anyways, best of luck
So I already made a few comments on the news post about this, but apparently I need to throw my two cents in here as well. While you've admitted that you wouldn't have been as bold in your video had you known there would be such backlash, you're still missing the REASON for the backlash.
You are currently advertising to one of largest mapping communities (if not THE largest) for StarCraft 2. When you think about that for a moment it stands to reason that some of the most talented mappers and modders would be in that crowd. Having said that, a sizable portion of your audience regularly makes content that is similar to or more complex/impressive than what you are making. Are you starting to see the problem?
I'm going to be blunt. Ignoring the UI, which is actually truly impressive and worthy of respect, everything data related that I have seen thus far I could make in an afternoon. I could even write a tutorial after finishing it and then make a video for said tutorial. So in <24hrs I could duplicate your content for heroes/spells/structures/teleporters/... and then make a tutorial for it. Keep in mind I'm not the only one capable of this. </brag>
That, right there, is the key to your problem. Regardless of how awesome your game is to you or how impressive you think it looks, you're not the only ones making content like this. So when you release a video that is chaotic and difficult to follow and then expect us to be impressed by it, the exact opposite happens. Especially when you then continue to believe your game is amazing.
You need to showcase the unique aspects of your game and illustrate how these new features are going to work. Instead you're saying you don't want to spoil anything by revealing these elements. Do you honestly think that we're going to fall in love with your game when all you are showcasing is common heroes with common abilities and a couple of twists?
I will be the first to say that most of us want you to succeed and will gladly support you in your endeavors, but you have to remember that you're making a hard sell here. The SC2Mapster is more impressed by the innovative features you create than the stereotypical heroes and abilities you've show us so far.
So take a step back, remember who you're talking to and then adjust your strategy. I don't doubt that you have a potentially great game, but you have to change your approach.
Totally agree with the long time lurker's opinion. I was expecting much more when sixen put this on hold and said it was impressive. Turn out still something along the line of Mephs's Smashcraft. Now more and more people being able to create such data content that it feels more bland (its still amazing nevetheless). Just hope that it can be more user-friendly in the future so that even the noobs can create some spell that does not look horrible (which is me).
We have uploaded two more videos, which are showcases of the heroes in the game. I know Dryeyce has done the audio for another 4 heroes, but I just lost an external harddrive with all my photoshop files on it, for all of Tofu. And whilst I do not technically need those photoshop files for the game anymore, as the UI work is done, I no longer have the files required to make the movies, so until I get some time to redo them, or to at least capture the frames from previous videos + put a raid in this comp, the videos will have to wait, cause with only 4gb free on the SSD, there is no way in hell I can capture video.
As stated numerous times, I always understood what community we are showcasing this map to. Obviously, if we marketted it hard to the general Battle.net population, they would be more impressed by eye candy than by technical features. It is really wise for me to list things out, like my engine is plug and play, extremely modular, etc ... to impress fellow scripters? No, because at the end of the day that is all invisible to the general community.
You have by far the best reputation as a Data editor, which by no doubt you are well aware of and is deserved. But I have yet to see anything totally amazing from you, in terms of a finished project. Does anyone care that Icefrog stole/copied/borrowed ideas from Tofu in 2004 whilst he was a beta tester? Or that my skills were greater than his and Guinsoo's at the time? No ... because put simply I never released a finished project. Having these amazing and revolutionary maps are all good and well, but if they are not in the popular map pool, say first five pages, then you have failed, as I did. I cannot wait for you to release something and utterly blow my mind, and I mean that with the utmost respect. Ie, AoS II if it is ever completed -_-.
The video was merely a teaser full of eye candy, a chaotic blend of flashy animation to simply get people to talk about the project, and in that regards we have most certainly succeeded. You guys want technical videos, which we want to do, but there is very little point doing them now if they are subject to change in the future before release. We have probably a few weeks left before full release, I am not talking about beta, which at that time, if we were up to scratch and there are a few bugs if any to fix, we will have time to do all the videos, which at that stage will not be needed as badly, as you can hop in the game and experience it for yourself.
. . .

It's clear to me that you're not interested in hearing what I/we have to say in our efforts to help you. As such I'll leave you with this:
If you assume my goal is to make it to the top of a system that I have publicly and frequently declared detrimental to the mapping community, then I suppose that I am indeed a failure and that my decision not to create a playable map thus far is representative of my inability to succeed.
If you assume that my goal is to teach and improve the community then you would realize that the tutorials I have created and the respectable reputation I have attained as an expert in my field IS how I have succeeded. I set goals for myself and I met them.
Just because you don't take the typical route through mapping doesn't mean "ur doing it wrong" and failed. Never forget that there are more ways than your own to succeed.
Not at all mate, but it has come to the point where there is very little left to say until the map is released, otherwise I would just be continually repeating myself.
This map, whether or not it succeeds, will push all fellow map makers to polish their maps further than ever before, because it is almost a showcase of what can be done with the editor for this type of game concept. Will it contain some super special slippery wet lap dance? *cough* technique? That is going to amaze fellow map makers? Probably not ... because there is nothing we have done that other people cannot do themselves. Why would we want to keep secrets from everyone? Both Dry and I agree, that whilst we do not want Tofu open-sourced, we will explain to anyone who wants to know how we did things, but as it stands at this moment neither of us have the time to make tutorials, or have the time to help people, simply because we are too busy working.
I have never for once assumed your goal is to make it to the top of the popularity system, because you know very well that I, along with the majority here, agree with what you have said in regards to that failure of a system. However, if your goal is indeed to teach and improve the community, then I urge you to finish AoS2, to prove to people what can be done.
It is well known that the majority of the current map pool of custom maps is complete and utter shit, compared to what could be done with the editor. There are of course numerous reasons for this, but one is simply because the majority of people who have the skills, like you and me, never finish their projects. Teaching people is all good in theory, but the majority of people you teach will either A) never learn enough to do anything worth while, or B) never follow through on their own projects. You kind sir, have the opportunity to set a new bar for the custom map scene, along with us, where we can continually push that bar higher and higher so that the majority of custom maps are amazingly good.
That is what we should be doing, rather than wasting time debating a simple trailer video that showed off some flashing graphics to the masses, which we both know will probably have no effect on the map what-so-ever, as the people who say they are going to boycott a map because of a simple video, would have boycotted it anyway for any number of different reasons, and the majority of people who will play it will never watch the video, never go to the website, never even care about anything other than clicking on it's name in the custom map list.
Your e-peen annoys me, stop it.
Just shut the hell up and deliver.
Walls of text aren't going too make you look less like a ego type.
I have faith in your project, yet I am tired of the same group of '2 Reply's' over and over in this thread.
Don't bother clicking my name, I am a nobody on part of proven projects. And I don't say your doing it bad.
Good luck on this project though !
Well it's not really bad to think that your map is amazing, it keeps you motivated. But what would be wrong is to force your ideals on other people by saying that it truly is amazing.
@DogmaiSEA
And to quote yourself, you really shouldn't be spending so much time typing out long walls of texts about... what you just typed. It leaves a rather bad impression. We all know you wish to create a revolutionary map. We all know you wish to up the standards of the maps out there. We all know how impressive you think this map will be. We all know how proud you feel about this great map. We all know how calm and collected your posts are. We all know how you seem to praise people to make them feel good. We all know how long your posts can get.
So seriously, we get your message. The sooner this map is out the better. Also, try not to type a huge long reply to this post. Hope you'll keep up the work though (On the map, not the posts =P )
When are you releasing your first map ? It's all very well be to be proud of one's map, and saying all the other custom maps are trash (which is quite true from a UI point of view, we must thank Blizzard for this), but for the moment it's as if you didn't do anything.
Yeah well, atm I wake up about 8am, finish about midnight-1am, every day, seven days a week.
I could release it right now, but I know in my heart that it is not finished. What we are doing now is basically polishing, that final 5% of map making, that is going to make it stand out against 95% of other maps. Dryeyce has finished his part, I am doing mine, so the delay is because of me and my choice not to release it. The game is finished, it is just polishing the UI, making special effects for the UI, custom art for all the abilities and items, things like that.
I really respect Prozaic, hence the long reply. I enjoy writing, it is relaxing for me, even if it is TL;DR for most. You gotta remember I need a break from map making every now and then, these posts are basically those breaks.
@ The release date, I presume a few weeks, so that would put it in first week of June? Depends on how fast I finish things off. It is hard to tell, the engine is done, the coding is done, the heroes and abilities are done, its just some final art and visual effects (for the UI) now.

ROFL.

@DogmaiSEA: Go
Your e-peen annoys me, stop it.
@DogmaiSEA
Will it take another 9 months ?
