Yup. I used to play it a ton when I was younger. Very fun & quirky game :D
I just read something about it somewhere and it got me thinking. What if there was a pikmin sc2 map? A marine or something that controls colored zerglings? The tricky part would be getting them to carry things properly. What do you guys think about a) how fun the game would be (especially if you add a 2nd player ;) ) and b) how technically possible it would be. I'm kind of debating between this and another project idea, so I wanted to hear what the community thought.
Update: I made a quick (and very VERY basic) engine.
That's actually a cool Idea, a marine, or any other unit, throwing zerglings. You could use scaled down ultralisks for purple ones. Maybe you can make it up to four players or even more. They're also making a new Pikmin game for the WiiU.
I LOVED PIKMIN
I was addicted (or whatevre you call a 3-day craze) when i was alot younger
I used to stick kebab sticks into onions and my mom would get mad at me
Also, i think the 'carrying' mechanics would work like StarShooters (The soccer/football game)
Might be fun. But does anybody have any idea at all how you would be able to get them to carry stuff? I am unaware of a way to make a "group ability" to do something like carry an object.
But what would people do? It could be a sort of like the original (scavenge for parts, time limit, etc...) but that would be single player only. The multiplayer for pikmin 2 was.. meh. I preferred the original one to the squeal. I'll whip together a basic engine or something to see how fun/terrible this might be.

Well I made a quick engine to let you control the zerglings. It's really really basic and doesn't do too much (mostly proof of concept). Basically here's how I have it.
Third Person Camera follows marine. Mouse is visible
Camera will be automatic (turn with player movement, player can press shift to force it to match the player angle)
Select zerglings with drag-select
Zerglings get deselected and put into your group
Group members follow you automatically
Right clicking "Throws" a zergling (right now it just runs over there). This removes that zergling from your group.
While holding control, zerglings will follow your mouse cursor instead of you (if you want them to get out of the way or something. ) While in this state, they will attack nearby enemies (and when it's finished, they would carry nearby stuff)
I'm still thinking it's going to be nearly impossible to get a system to let them carry stuff. =/
Hmm try to use power ups to give behavior and and do actor when unit has behavior attach model to it :)
But what would it be like? Co-op campaign style or pvp?
Edit: Actually I don't even know how you want them to carry stuff xD
I thought of this myself lol. It was a fun game for the Cube. Basically you have onion thingies that come in red, blue, yellow, and I think green or something and you need to collect parts for your ship in a month because your survival suit will work for that long. Along with collecting parts, you must fight bad guys that get tougher and tougher. Giant frogs, spiders the size odins, etc etc. Killing the enemy and taking their remains to the ship spawned you more colorful onion heads. You need a certain number of pikmin (the colorful onion thingies) to accomplish certain tasks such as knocking over bridges and carrying back enemies and ship parts. Each type of pikmin has special abilities (the blue ones could go in water and not die, the red ones could survive fire, I forget the rest). Also, the game has a day-night cycle. If any pikmin are alive when it gets dark but they are out of their spawner, they die. I haven't played it in years but I have a good memory.
You would need to make more than one map because there are multiple large maps in the game. A Char map would be perfect for the red pikmin while a Bel'Shir map would work well for the blue and yellow ones.
Oh yeah, I shield probably describe the game for those who never played it O.o
You play as this little space guy that crashed his ship on this planet. He only has enough battery left in his suit to survive 30 days. He finds these little pikmin, and he can use them to find the parts of his ship scattered around. When you carry a pellet or a dead body back to the ship, you get more pikmin. The goal is to get all 30 parts of the ship before you run out of days.
So the way they carry is stuff is like this: Every carry-able object has a certain weight. You can carry parts of your ship, the bodies of dead enemies, and these little pellets that you find. Whatever the weight is, you need that many pikmin to carry it. So the pikmin grab the object one by one until enough of them are holding it, and then they start carrying it (together, as a group) back to the ship. If one of them dies while holding the thing, the rest of them will drop it and be unable to continue until you get the required amount of pikmin back on it.

As I said before, ask the StarShooters programmer how he did it.
I suggest we do a 8 player 2v2v2v2/4v4/FFA game where you each start at a different area and meet at the center. The zerglings spawn in the virophrange while the hydralisk (who can't attack) runs around with a group of (400/#ofPlayers max for lag) zerglings.
This way, they all have one theme. I would watch out for copyright violations even thought the 'spaceman civilizes aliens' idea is pretty common.
Also, can I join the team as an artist or something? I really wanna be a part of the team that makes this.
I'm going to clarify this real quick- I am by no means dedicated to making this. It's just an idea I am exploring. If it ends up looking like something that would be fun and possible to make, I will probably go ahead with it. But by no means is this an "official" project or anything.
Star Shooters? He has a carry-ing system? Wasn't that a FPS?
I will make a demo video if and when I get the basics running. Perhaps it could be more of a multiplayer deathmatch type of thing? With a single player mode? Lol I have no idea.
