As my map gets closer and closer to becoming at least complete enough for a good beta run, I have had mixed reviews from real life friends as to whether or not the map is offensive? If people find it too much so, then I will simply never publish it and play it privately.
Here is the basic storyline of the map:
Time Period/Location: a modified WW2 timeline in Europe
You are one of several heroes from several different regions, current heroes [more will be added eventually]:
British
Commando
a soldier unit, has several functions and grenades
Royal Sniper
a tactical sniper hero
-German-
- Wehrmacht Soldier
a soldier unit, has several functions and pipe bombs
- SS Occultist
a specialist troop, has abilities based on German/Norse mythology
- Specialist Tactician
a unit that uses special weapons, flame throwers, poison bombs, etc
Russian
- ROA trooper
a soldier, bonus movement speed on snow is main specialty, recon abilities
If you are on British/Roman sides, you attack Germany, and from encampments in neighboring countries, depending on locations based somewhat on actual history, + slight sub stories depending on which hero you pick.
If you are on German side, you are defending Germany from invasion.
The SS occultist by far has the most intricate and interesting storyline, not to reveal too much but he wakes up from a dream in which a Norse God comes down to him and tells him Ragnarok is now, and he must defend Germany.
Although my friends have given my map positive review, some seemed worried that a game where Germany is looked at from an invasion perspective might be offensive to some.
German here.
I personally do not think that this map is offensive, though the WW2 setting may bore some people and scare them off.
Yet I do look forward to playing this map, as it sounds quite interesting due to the Norse mythology background. As long as you don't take the whole thing too seriously, there shouldn't be a problem. I feel reminded of the Wolfenstein Series, which is plain awesome! And they didn't take themselves too seriously either.
Though of course there WILL always be some people that are offended by pretty much everything. Don't let them spoil your mapcreating enthusiasm.
This all is based off the info given by you; if the map contains the usual forbidden stuff (pr0nography, Nazi symbols [*cough* psistorm looks like an SS-Rune *cough*], racist paroles), it will be taken down solely due to the legal stuff. Just keep that in mind.
Blizzard is very strict with maps nowadays. If anything is named SS in your map and somebody reports it, I think your map will get banned (the ironic part being most of the lost viking stuff in the editor is actually prefixed with SS_ :D )
I would not take this to be offensive at all, theres lots of WW2 maps. But if somebody reports it, blizz could ban it. But I'd be shocked if they did. You could always "re-skin" the map and change the setting from WW 2 to sc2 without changing the gameplay too much.

Ya as a matter of fact you should change it to sc2 setting. I have a feeling and I've noticed this already. But I imagine blizzard will be much more apt to feature a game if it's baed off of the sc2 storyline. Infact I'm sure they'd be extactic(sp) if they noticed the map making community making an effort to keep it all as close to startcraft as possible.
Everything is offensive to someone somewhere. Even this post. Don't worry about it, from what I can tell it's just a map based on WWII. Now if you go trying to spread nazism or whatever it would be bad. But look at Wolfenstein, it's a game all about you taking down Germans. Sure it might be offensive but if you look at more recent ones they don't have as much Nazi content as previous games. I think you'll be fine with your map. Sounds interesting imo.
How would defending Germany from invasion be offensive? That's history. I hope your map would not be reported for simply spinning an alternate timeline story.

What do you guys think?

Doesnt seem to be any more offensive than the Red Alert series (meaning not)

Someone is bound to get butthurt, but to answer the thread's opening question - I wouldn't find it offensive.

If someone got offended by that, then playing any video game above the "E" rating obviously isn't for them.
Of course, these days you never know what things Blizzard will interpret as "offensive." Might as well just make the gamble.
