Hey everyone, I'm having trouble finishing my terrain cause I'm not very good at it and want to give up. Was wondering if someone would like to help me finish it so I can move on to the gameplay. The goal is to make a city so the terrain is urban/ suburban with different districts. I attached a top view of what i have so far (you can see there's some doodads scattered around). Also, part of a block that I almost finish.
I've found that terrainers tend to be somewhat shy - my suggestion would be to look in the terraining forums and personally PM a terrainer that you know isn't already engaged with other major projects.
I'm seeing Tarsonis buildings right? Hmmm well for a city the most important part is the doodads such as bridges, buildings, signs, and lights. I'll whip something up just for fun to test myself and then I may or may not get back to you. Mozared has said that I'm not very good but I like giving things a try when I'm in the right mood.
I've been meaning to make a decent city terrain that I can use for things like shooters and RPGs anyway. A generalized terrain able to be used for multiple things may be just what I need. Hmmm.....

Stop being so emo =P. I never said "you aren't very good". All I said was that I didn't really like anything you cooked up until a specific point, when everything I saw from you was really beginning to look pretty cool. I'm pretty sure you can make some awesome terrains if you stick with it.
same thing to me :P but anyway I'm "cooking up" a gourmet dinner now. It shall be the finest food you have ever tasted! Allow me to present the start of the main course.
Definitely not the BEST. but that looks reasonable nonetheless. Is this a WIP? If it is, then I would suggest that you use something else for the roads. What you're using right now just doesn't work. Also, is that Haven Grass Rocky that I see? If it is, then you must change that immediately. It hurts to look at :(
Other than those tips, just generally keep adding detail. Perhaps windows on the building/balconies, and maybe some fire escapes; adding curbs on the sides of the street and sidewalks wouldn't hurt either.
actually it's Tarsonis rubble tileset. I said it was just a start and I don't really like the texture either. What fire escapes? I could use Mar Sara roads instead if you want. What is WIP?
Cool, thanks a lot for the tips. I think terrain in general is just not something I can't get into, not sure why :). But, I do like putting doodads together. Especially like how Maxsvard does it. Main concern is sculpting the terrain with cliffs and trees to make everything look natural. Think that's really what I need help with.
What sort of city are you going for? Personally, I think that Korhal would work quite well. About the roads, the Tarsonis roads are actually train tracks. For fire escapes, you might be able to use the cliff scaffolding doodad.
Best way to get good at making terrains: Make lots of terrains. I've authored about 6 published cortex terrains. Looking at them, from first to last, I can see a steady improvement in my own skill and style. The nice thing about starting with cortex terrains is how much freedom you get to have as a terrainer. No, you don't learn important things like terrain balance between fractions as quickly, but you have free reign to experiment. Finally, you end up having to learn the basics of imports, triggers, publishing, and even data, to get your map on bnet; all of these things are essential, I think, to being not just a good terrainer, but a good mapmaker in general.
Anyways, this project will look great. I've seen DrHu's UI work before, and it is stunning.
I wanted to make an industrial Tarsonis city but I don't know what that looks like as there are no good terrains like that out there. O well back to making my Imperial Korhal cities.
Have to agree though, real city terrains are a bit scarce. Along with lava terrains, snow terrains and alien planets. Everyone makes jungle, Mar Sara, space platform or indoor terrains.
There aren't many snow terrains because there are no snowy doodads and it's a bit tricky to get access to the Niflheim texture set. That might change in HotS, though.

P.S. WIP means work in progress.

I agree, havent seen a really detailed city in maps yet. Only that one clip from the cinematic contest.
