If you have not heard about it yet, or have not seen my overwhelming support for that game, I recommend you checking it out, on the merits of the awesome indie developers and their ARPG philosophy alone.
If that's not enough for you, here's a rundown of what's interesting about that game
- Immersive ARPG of what a successor to D2 should have been (the atmosphere, the character, the realistic style..)
- Free to Play, Online only, with absolutely no Pay to Win system (it is available right now in open beta).
- Complex item game and currency system. There are no gold in the economy.
- Complex and mind-blowing passive skill tree. Just give it a look, you won't be dissapointed.
- Active skill system as gem socketed into item with linked gems supporting active skill (FF materia system)
- Different ladder and leagues, with different duration, customizable rulesets (not available now), and frequent races.
If you are new, you might want to hold off for tomorrow to avoid the 0-day server rush. Nevetheless, it's less than 15 hours at the moment of this post.
I'm a huge supporter of indie projects and especially ARPGs... but:
I played it during that open beta weekend a few months back, and it didn't keep me interested. I felt like the camera angle/zoom was off and the speed of the game was quite slow. As much as Diablo 3 is hated, I found it to be much more smooth/inviting than PoE.
I also found the whole socketing thing confusing to start, and the UI design overall could use an upgrade :/ Maybe if I stuck around longer I could have gotten more into the depth that it appears to have...
Well, I honestly wanted to like the game more, but it didn't happen :(
Definitely stick around longer. Take my words for it. A big minus of the game is currently the slow casting and attacking speed early game, but as you progressed, it become more fast paced.
I don't know about the zoom but I think because I got used to it. Socketing is quite simple, any skill gem you socketed on your gear you can use, and it level up with you. Some might require a weapon equipped Any support gem (that are not active) socketed and linked (visually) with an active gem will support it. Rules are quire intuitive.
The depth of the game lies in the end game and the amount of customization that it has, which is precisely what D3 lacks. In a perfect world, I want blizz's programmer to be working for POE (their art team is fine) but here's what we had and it's pretty good.
yea, been playing this for awhile, amazing game. already put alot more time into it then i did with diablo 3.
yea. it's sluggish as shit at the beginning. but it definitely gets better and faster. you really get that feeling of getting stronger.
I have been casually playing this game for many months. I was never super into it. I got a handful of characters to 50+ but never got into late game maps or anything. The biggest problem I had with the game in all my time playing is that you could go ice witch, and win... or you could go leap slam marauder and win... Or you might be able to go all out summons and win. In any other scenario of what might be considered "A unique build which will keep game-play interesting" had to be based around CI. To me, the overall imbalance in classes and slow progression (especially with any fringe class) pushed me away from the game.
I am however starting back up again, now that act 3 is out. Hopefully the additional act will keep the game fresh. As a 7 year Diablo 2 player; I will say that this game is really geared towards that highest tier of player. The biggest downside is that you need to put in a lot of effort in order to get yourself hooked on the game. The game isn't immersible enough, or fast enough to make you think "Man, I can't wait to play PoE later!"
Might try it. Looks good visually and mechanically. Skill/attribute tree looks like a web of crap though which I dont like at first glance. but we'll see.
Also, No auction house!. So thats already a huge plus;p
I think it is superior to Diablo 2 in my opinion from the first few levels. though D2 was over a decade ago :P. The art style seems better, though some of the textures tend to blend into the walls inside of caves(hard not to make work good but its still okay), The Skill tree with its long ass paths is really cool, Also the Ability system with its runes is REALLY innovative You level up your abilities BY USING THEM, this was something I hated in D2, you hit the wrong skill tree button and you cant use your ability any more...
It does have a few problems though.
1. Hit boxes, Sometimes I click on a unit and their hitbox is like 1/2 cm away from the unit on one side. Sooo yeah.... those are a bit crappy and should be fixed.
2. Bosses, the ones I have encountered( I havent made it to the end of act 1 yet), Seem dinky, I mean I have just ran up spammed throwing knives/autoattack and spamming potions. They die quickly.
3. Special Creeps Are easy too, again im still act 1 on normal, but they seem TOO easy.
4. Theres no gold, You trade for pieces of specialty items, Like Scrolls Of Wisdom(identify), and orbs that do things, such as making a normal weapon magical(no weapon is crap in this game either thanks to this). It seems the further you go and the higher level items you sell you get new things, At first I had no Scrolls of TP or Wisdom, now minions drop them(lvl 10 place)
5. The Town Portal looks like crap.
A few pros
1. TPs Disappear if you go into town for over 15 minutes. lol i love this, no more scrubs waiting inside of town wasting time.
2. Town Portals are RARE, so its a big decision whether or not its worth using them
3. Waypoints are every other zone
4. The monsters are new/aren't Diablo ripoffs
5. The PASSIVE skill tree.
6. Ability Runes
7. Scrolls of Identify are rare, so you actually have to decide if its worth identifying to you, no more identifying items you cant even use :P
8. Orbs - Orbs Reroll stats, Give normal items stats, improve armor on items, etc
9. Potion system, no more having a belt that holdes 40 potions, and no more BUYING potions being mandatory, now potions recharge over time, and most have 4-5 uses until empty and have to charge 5 slots for potions. Also Potions CAN BE MAGIC ITEMS. which is VERY cool. so like Instant regen, and such.
10. Its FREE 2 PLAY SO ALL THOSE CONS DONT MATTER!!!!!
The difficult. Its easy like that at the start, but apparently it gets much harder. You should play hardcore mode. Normal is...
Another pro is that the game world supports many players. I know Diablo 3 was limited to 4 per game, which was kinda boring. Im not talking about party size, but its nice to have and see a lot of other players in and around town etc. The group forming displayed on the notice board is also cool.
Just beat act 1, Pretty good final boss, Reminds me of Andy from D2, the Model wasnt big enough was my only problem good fight though. Theres no Inbetween Cinematics(its Free 2 Play get over it) act 2 looks promising been killing monkies :P

Open Beta trailer for a quick rundown
In other news, Curse is pretty fast (and smart) for acquiring the POE wiki 24 hours before open beta went live.
