It takes a long long long time for anything of quality to pop up anyways, up until this point, no custom map/mod released would be close to a "premium" one.
I think there's a few maps that I would consider premium already. To name a few:
Smashcraft: I'd value this $1.99c-$2.99 really if the dev are willing to keep on updating with new contents.
StarBattle: I'm willing to pay 99c to $1.99 if they keep supporting it.
Blizzard DotA: if released and as good as LoL, HoN, $2.99 to $4.99 is reasonable imo.
I'm sorry if I offense creator of SmashCraft or StarBattle with that few $ valuation. But What I am trying to say here is that Battle.Net can adopt the idea of Mobile App Store. Believe it or not, Map and App rhymes. There's an app for that. There's a map for that. It is meant to work that way imo.
Sell it for 99c-4.99 I bet people are willing to pay really as long as the quality is there and there will be supports on the map.
Now more concern than the Popularity System, or the Custom Game list is the Mod Security. How to make sure nobody can rip it off and resell. Very crucial imo.

But even your TD, I'm willing to pay 99c or so if you keep updating with more waves and bosses and more race really. 99c is just one piece of grandma cookie from the vending machine. Oh and one (1) Street Fighter game at the arcade costs you $1.50 btw. If you're really good you can sit the whole day kicking new challenger's asses and that's it - Just one day of entertainment max. This is 99c and you can play Vexal TD for the rest of your life with mapmakers support, patch and updates. Very fair pricing imo...
I think Blizzard should be less strict on the qualification. Let us use their assets and they get like 30% royalty from map sales or something. Just adopt Mobile App Store model.

I respect your blizzard loyalty and I think for anyone running a site such as this that's great to have. But I'd be very surprised to see any kind of blizzard marketplace for SC2 mod content. This news is long coming and it's going to be long and drawn out moving forward to minimize bad PR.
Mark my words blizzard will slowly retract all the promises made concerning the marketplace and just try to wring out as much profit out of starcraft 2 with some hastily put together sequels. Blizzard Dota will be sub-par at best (I bet they're already trying to think of ways to cancel it without looking like morons considering DOTA 2 from valve will likely destroy this mod in quality). We likely wont see any more blizzard custom games considering the total disaster the already released 3 turned out to be.
Make all the suggestions you want, they will fall on deaf ears. They're cutting their losses. No one on this SC 2 team either has the passion or power to make this game the worthy successor of the blizzard RTS franchise.

You got a point there. What you can do is donate 50% of the yield to charity or so. Just like how Blizzard did to their WoW pet. And I am pretty sure your fans are willing to chip in if the price is something like 99c or so.
Look at Farmville, Frontierville, Cityville, Restaurant City, Mafia Wars. Basically all social games. In 2010, Zynga got $400M from 200M user base. Thats $1Million+ per day. That's Madness! If users are willing to spend that much, why won't they spend 99c, with 50c going to charity, and 49 cents for tributes to the mapmakers. I think charging small amount makes sense.

Except Angry Birds. The best mobile Apps out there really. 99c for about 250 levels, and they keep updating it with new content every few months. Total of almost 300 levels to date.

3/the creators would have to be vetted, the creators would have to sign contracts with blizz (ever thought of the average age of the mapmaker???), creators would have to graciously work their asses off to "implement" every single patch sc2 requires into their mod (imagine the shittload of maintenance), not to mention galaxy... a gamer would not buy a game but a temp game (one that will not be updated per say, when taken into a "marketplace" point of discussion), finally so much hassle while the community does it already for free (just have to "moderate" the content (mods and maps, bratchannels and .. the forums..., this costs, whether you think so or not, many a shinning coin)...
Don't get me started on the "how one would go about getting their mod online" (lol original models and 2gig cap.. yes it is a gig (the danse)... it's utterly impossible without SEVERAL copies... sounds.. terrain... you name it.. it's a quick math work, do it for your own educative purposes)

While in USA the price pool is only $25,000 ahahah fekin' lame. That's why 3 TV broadcasts StarCraft Brood War. And that's why all pro players from EU, US go to South Korea to compete. For the fame, competitiveness, and (don't forget) money! That's exactly why! Now, recenly, MLG announced, they will have price pool of $200,000 for StarCraft 2, and Boomm!! EG.IdrA decided to go back to his home country. Why? Because the price pool is worth it. It values him as a US pro gamer!!
Hate it or not: Money makes everything goes around. As long as you don't be greedy, a little bit of money incentives is VERY GOOD, VERY HEALTHY for the industry, for the community.

I don't think that it is.
We already recognize impressive coding work with the editor. We as in the developer community. After seeing work such as his, a person's opinion is likely high of him.
However, the audience for impressive coding is not the players. It's us. We definitely recognize these people because their contributions are relevant to our work in our own maps.
But they're not relevant to players. I'm sure they couldn't care less.
It depends who's opinion (if any) you care about. If you'd like to be recognized among the developer community, then work on pushing the boundaries of the editor. If you'd like to be recognized by the players, work on the ultimate fun game.
If youd like to be really really amazing, do both with one project. Such however is quite rare. Don't count on it.

I love how people complain constantly like they are being ripped off by Blizzard .They tied you to a chair and made you buy this horrible game. We dont even have true support for the GE ( um maybe they made it that way for a reason) so meh who knows about the marketplace. Nice perk if it happens IMO If you bought SC2 just to sell a map then I LOL @ you . Marketplace may or may not happen ....put out a good map either way if this is what you love to do.
