It seems to me like such a system(one where the most popular/polished maps are sold to players) would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to implement or would not be successful if implemented. Assumedly, they would wait until maps were popular on the ladder, remove them, and then add a download onto a separate menu for purchase.
Are people really going to pay for maps with such a plethora of available alternatives? What will stop people from simply making derivatives of the map in question? Would maps be deleted for too closely resembling existing ones?(e.g. if Blizzard released Blizzard DOTA for a $4.99 fee, would they delete maps like SOTIS etc. for being too similar? Or if Star Battles was added to the list, and I were to create, say "Ship Conflict" which closely resembled the aforementioned title, would it be removed?) Has Blizzard released anything to date with their plans?
I believe the goal of a Premium Map is to not take existing maps and move them into a pay to play portion. But merely an opt-in basis.
The creator of a map has spent substantial amount of time working on their map, have created all new art assets, and terrain textures. Maybe even put together a team that worked on it for a few months to put out a well polished map, they could Opt-In to selling their map because of the time spent on it.
I'm pretty sure their will be criteria that one must meet to be able to opt-in to selling their map too, what they might be is up to debate.
It is highly doubtful Blizzard will delete free maps that are too similar to Premium Maps, Premium Maps are supposed to profit creators, not Blizzard(I would hope it works out more in that favor, with nothing taken by Blizzard for the hosting of said maps).
The original goals if I recall would work similar to Valve and Half Life.
Ex: Person created a mod of Half Life 2, they released it free to the public for use, everyone rejoiced and enjoyed playing it, but nothing was too terribly ground breaking in the mod, new maps, new weapons, a few new strategies for traversing through the game.
Ex 2: A person puts together a team who works for weeks making a very polished complete Remake using the Half Life 2 engine, they change the play style to a top down shooter with bosses and puzzles and more. They are now allowed to sell their Mod to the community under Valve's rules(I don't know what Valve allows as mods being sold personally) and people who want to play it purchase and enjoy.
Lilliana, I think you are SERIOUSLY underestimating the amount of time and effort it takes to build total conversion mods. I'm part of a small team that has been working non-stop, every single day, since the beginning of August on a full-scale total conversion for SC2. New art, sound, music, gameplay, maps, and full-scale SP campaign.
Whether this map marketplace even exists is still up for debate, but we are doing it anyways. This isn't something that takes a couple weeks. More like one year minimum of extremely hard work.
ive been working on a map and i can say I put HOURS apon HOURS on it almost to the poitn where i should get paid for it LOL or altea put it on my CV!! haha
but evan witht hat said if Blizz adds a pay option to the maps im reverting to sc1! cause thats thwe dumess thing ive hurd!"!
people put hours apon hours in creating new APPS for cell phone and they barely sell for mroe then 3$$ and i can tell you we put ALOT mroe time on a cellphone app then a SC2 Editor that basicly has every thing done for you . ( triggers = noob rpograming ) data = data entry.
the galxie editor ( evan doh you can do SOOOOO much with it ) its like a Game maker for newbys (prety much all the lines of codes are done for you and you chose the right templates. ) Also they have Debuging programes that basicly fixes your polish programes . honestly peopel take way mroe time they need to make maps some times , just cause they lack the proper tools.
with that said . i would NEVER pay for a map on SC2 , id recreat one similar to it befor paying , LOL!!!
Hmmm.....If I were blizzard I would do one of 2 things..
1- stop being money hogs and leave OUR WORK free
2- Make it so selling your map is PURELY OPT-IN ONLY!!..>If they steal your work and make it pay-to-play without your permission, I'd be pissed. I know its legal but still....Also, blizzard should review the map and make sure it very high quality, non-buggy, and very polished- I'm talking polished like Aiur chef. THEN I would allow the creator to set his or her price and take X % of the profits for blizzard and they keep the other % of the profits. I'd also make it so you could play a premium map 5 times before having to buy it. I would NEVER buy a map without playing it first, and even If its good I''d still most likely not buy it.

So you're saying if Blizzard gave you the opportunity to make money for your hard work you'd switch back to SC1?!?!????!!!?????
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Stuff I've worked on: Carbot's StarCrafts Mod (2014-present) StarCraft 2 Hotkey Trainer (2010) | Mineralz Evolution (2011+) | Dungeon Legacy (2013+) | Phoenix TLMC 4 Entry (2014) Assisted: City of Tempest (2012) | BarCraft (2013) | Poker Defense (2014) and a few more.
Yeah I'm getting a little tired of these "I will quit everything and hate blizz for life if they add premium maps" posts.
I love making maps and hell if I could get something decent with well-done art done and on their marketplace system, which at the start won't be flooded like the iphone app store is atm... then I'm game to make a 10 grand or 20 grand or 100 grand etc. assuming I'm successful.
What would be greater than not having to have any 9-5 job or part-time job and just make cool mods/maps as your job?
That's my optimistic view :D
Also: For the most part donation is a failure system, very little people do it.
As long as we don't get flooded with "loz teh tower defenze map" and "my first DotA MAp" or "zErglin attack eekk!" crap maps, it might work ok. I'd love to make money doing map making- its fun and relatively easy once you learn the editor. But the issue is if blizz says "k guys you can sell maps" a billion people with NO IDEA how to use the editor will make crap maps and sell them...Ughhh...But like I said, if its handled well it might be good. But since blizz can't manage to fix popularity or even just add a search bar to custom games, I'm doubtful they will succeed with this. They certainly made one heck of an amazing game though....

When one considers it from this perspective, it actually does present itself as a logical system. I suppose I was only considering the most basic definition of "maps" - e.g. something along the lines of Nexus Wars, which A. I can't see anyone paying for and B. Is ridiculously easy to re-create. If one considers that maps would be more along the lines new games in their totality - I suppose something as competitive and popular as a well made DOTA remake could be included as well- would be sufficiently unique and entertaining to warrant payment.
still think its a bad Idea ,
,
if i wanted to get paid id get a job for blizzard!!! or go to school learn how to do REAL game design and get a job with EA, Ubisoft or w/e
Ether way there isnt a single MAP out there right now that is worth paying for.
Basically if people expect to get Paid , I better not RECONIZE SC2 in your map! . it better be 100% custom units custom doodads custom EVERYTHING...
Also i can only see this working if Blizzard Makes the BANK sytem better. or have Multy maps with in one map style things . to alow for UGE games.
honestly i think this is gona fail: how many of you are actually WILLING to pay 3-10$ for a map?? i know im not . thats my opignion.
Donations would be a GREAT idea doh. that i can agree with .

Ok I dont think you grasp the situation......
Premium would more then likey only be for "total conversions" in the case of where an "actual game company" or "group of dedicated modders" build a completely seperate "RTS" game out of the "SC2 Engine" and sell it through "B.net Premium Maps/ Campaignes"
Think about how... "steam" sells "borderlands" ... border lands is built off the "unreal Engine".... and they sell it.... online through "steam"
You could potentially sell your "campaign from your own website" (legal EULA issues involved) and let people down load your campaign pack after paying, but they would then have access to the raw files for the campaign which you prolly dont want.
now you might say ... we already have acces to all the components to "locked" maps.... but I think b.net is gonna step up the level of map protection when they bring the "premium system" live.... that is if they ever do
none of your peoples maps would qualify ... cept the guy who is on a team doing a "total-conversion"
PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES
As for premium maps.... I already have one in the works if the system goes live.
its called "I Haz Moniez" and I will charge $0.01 if I cant set the price.
well if REAL companys takes blizzards Editor and makes CRAZY games with it , then yes i would pay! , but any thing else , forget it.
honestly probly 0.0001% of mappers out there that have the POTENTIAL to make a game worth cash! unless they really have a UGE team in witch case your 5$ for a map wont really make you profit considering the HOURS your gona have to spend to make a pay map.
i think mappers are quickly gona relise its not worth the time/$$$
Should be opt-in with specialist Blizzard QA testers checking if the map is up to standard. If It's good enough, you set a price and it's sold (With blizz taking X% of the profits). If it isn't good enough, you can't sell it.
Another thing that could be good is 'Micro-transactions'. Eg, you make a really good map, and release it for free. Blizzard could think it's not good enough to sell, but that you could sell say a hero from it. Eg, a DotA map is popular. You level up to get new heroes, but some are locked. To unlock the locked ones, you go to the marketplace and buy a Hero for the map. You can then play it in the map. Allows people to buy stuff, without the need for having to buy it before playing it.
Iphone APP store has over 300,000 apps , but only 5000 sell! , 295000 usless apps.
the reasonf or that is because apple has a REALLY SHIIITY aprouval system , they have a 1 page paper with a check list on it . they dotn evan test them.
and i think the same BS is gona happen with this system. if they do come out with this system , blizzard better moderate it to the MAX or else its just gona get floaded

You've completely missed the point of this. Nobody is going to be able to sell a "loltower defense" or "dota2!!!"
Blizz has publicly stated that any "premium" projects have 100% new custom art, gameplay, everything.
We're talking complete re-do's of the entire game, with entire teams working very, very hard.
Calling it "maps marketplace" is a bit decieving. These are full scale, total conversion mods.
