You forget that most people would. In a few years I will be going to university. I plan to study Computer Science and get a job as a game programmer. Now if me and someone else try to get a job at the same place, but I made a reasonably successful SC2 map, and the other guy hadn't, who would they hire? Now whilst at uni, if I can create an SC2 map that I am allowed to sell, that could also go part of the way to covering fees (And I'll need it. Damn conservatives ><).
If you really want something to show off, then learn C+ + / Java and program a real game. Nothing too big, but something that shows you know the real deal.
A Sc2 map might get you good marks in art or gameplay design, but triggering in Sc2 and programming for real are two very different things.
You don't seem to be grasping the point that it IS big teams of people working on these mods. I've attached a pic below of what my small group is working on (7 of us right now). Can we sell it? I have no idea at this point. Would we like to be able to make a few dollars off this, sure? But either way, it's a decent introduction to trying to become a professional game designer.
We're not talking about simple maps with a new twist on tower defense here, its all new stuff. The only reused piece of art is a few of those tiny vegetation models.
like i said in the other post: If its a not 100% NEW game ( new doodas ,new units , new weapons , ect...) i would not pay for it. if u wana make maps nothing stoping you from puting it on yoru CV for future Jobs , but doesnt mean your gona get paid for it.
I Compose alot of music , and befor i released a little CD and made a little $$ on it , i made maybe 1000Songs befor ever seing a peny for it , meaning . your stuff better be dam good and polish if u expect it to make ANY cash!
well GL to you guys out there that plan on releaseing paid map , i wish you the best. seriously. i just dont feel its gona do that good.
and i dont think you guys understand what im saying , go nust man take your team of 7 people make a map i dont care , just dont expect to make mroe then a couple $$$ and like i said befor and ill say it again . nothing stoping you from maki9gn REALLY good maps and puting on your CV for a future job . just dont expect to make alot of acsh.
Actually as a full programmer myself I will say that triggers are very close to real programming... just with most of the headaches gone... e.g. no need to make a method to find the angle between points, cause blizz made it for you!
And yeah it shocks me too the shit that's top-rated on the app store and worth money... the problem is the blizz system started out free so suddenly when you add money system it makes people angry. Even though most maps are actually better than apps on the app store aside from having no custom art.
you know what else is sad?? they waist mroe time makign does crappy apps then you take on a SC2 map lol . kidna sad really
but you CANOT compare cell phone to a PC game Editor , not evan the same categori of Gaming!! or the same market
Iphone users = 100000000X more then people playing SC2 , and Apps on cell phone are not just game oriented , MOST of all the apps that DO sell are app related to Sytem improvement for your cell phone , or work related like sync programes , e-mails , things liek that . so you cant really compare.

hmmm , i dont understand why your so deffencive ( your working ona TD map ? )
I know how economics works , all youve been doing is reply by saying im wrong , got any thing to back your self up?
wana talk economics ?? i BET you 10$ this project fails! , then img ona use that 10$ to make mroe $$ , got spend $$ to make $$ thats the real world. so go to school learn hwo to do it like a pro. ( or spend countless hours figuering it out your self , etehr way )
all i did was give you my opignion , and seriously i think the Porject by blizzard will FAIL! if you dont thats ok , good for you , im not insolting you.
AGAIN! like i said in otehr post witch you CLEARLY skipped and just assumed iw as negative : i said GL to all you mappsters that wana do this i wish you the best of luck .
followed by , dont get your hopes up that your gona make a crap load of cash on this , this is GREAT for you that wana get into game desing later . you can put it on your CV ( i said it 4 time in 4 post but hopelly you can read this time soul ) and hosnestly . if you ever get to the point where you make alot of cash , chances are , your gona be working for blizzard way befor that happends. lol.
I wouldn't mind if premium maps worked the same way as youtube partnership. Toss an advertisement on the loading screen (what else will you do while loading?) and give money to the map author. This way the users don't have to pay for maps, and the authors get $$ that scales with its popularity.
Iphone sucks ( meaning people spend lots of money on the stupidest things)
Iphone apps suck ( meaning people spend lots of money on the stupidest things)
nobody here really cares if you think attempting to make a premium maps would be a waiste of time
premium maps currently dont exist.... why worry about it
I wouldnt make a premium map other then a small custom model that does nothing .... but requires them to pay me for something that does nothing... just like that one Iphone app called "I am Rich".... that did nothing for like $900 bucks
so yeah... eh... if your not a fan why post anything....
they wont require we pay for all maps....
just custom ones.... if say ... a real company published a completely new game using SC2 engine whats wrong with selling it through Bnet map store?
Your logic is flawed good sir.
Theres no backing anything up..... Your just plain wrong.....

Also, to cheezdip, That's not a bad idea... As an example, I want partnership on my YouTube channel so I can put more time into tutorials instead of working parttime somewhere.
On an ironic note, I'm actually posting this from my iPhone because I just dropped my laptop and the cd drive won't stop making noises... F lol.
As a software engineer, I take offense to this. Art is worth money, but logic, game design, and testing are not? Have to agree with OneTwo - it's just writing code at a higher level of abstraction. Building on a solid API / existing assets just makes sense if you think about it. No one discredits database apps because they didnt rewrite mysql or oracle.

In what area of programming are you? You usually don't use trigger-action systems to code the core game. These are only for gameplay programming or whatever you call it.

You must not understand economics too well.... must be all the socialism in the air these days.
In a real economy .... people spend time, blood , sweet , tears creating a new product on a chance to make it big and succede.
There is no garenteed reward for all that is put into following your dreams.
Just as... theres no garentee people will even enjoy your map if it is free.
It all comes down to chance.
Quit being so negative
(cant believe I just said that)

But anyways guys, obvious troll is obvious...
