There'd be a huge outcry if Blizzard were to rip-off DotA and - in order to actually make it successful - ban all other dota lookalikes.
People would set Blizzard employee's cars on fire if they dare to do so. They'd never do.
They might just release something like Candy War (wasn't that the name?) of WC3, but nothing more.
Honestly, threads like this one annoy the crap out of me and are the reason I troll...
Blizzard doesn't care about you or your maps. They aren't going to steal it and try to make money off of it because (surprise) it costs money to rip off a map. It is just easier to use the premium content system and have the mapmakers do the work for them and they just skim off the top.
Note:
Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, everything I have said on these forums today has been negative and condescending. Sorry...
For me it does not matter. I trust Blizzard not to abuse that right. If they did, rumors would spread and most people would just stop making maps, reducing Starcraft 2's longevity by who knows how many years!
Keep in mind that in order to get an play someone's map you DON'T always have to be online, heck, you don't even have to be in the game. You could technically distribute map files straight from the galaxy editor and run them through test mode. I play my WIP map regularly that way to make sure things are working and if I gave you access to that file you'd also be able to play that map in that way. The only constraint is that all the maps would be single player.
While that work around is there, I don't think it's ever going to become necessary. If they add a premium map system they're not going to steal the maps that players created. I wouldn't be suprised if they took a small percentage of the money those maps would (or most likely wouldn't) be earning; but it will be up to the creators whether they want to make their map a premium map and never have people play it.
They made this particular non peer to peer interface and system for the upcoming marketplace. And yes, they want to earn profit out of upcoming popular maps that are as trivial as DotA, but they will also let the author earn a share.
I think,
It's FAIR!
Just change the damn interface so that you can search maps by name/author and sort by popularity - descending/ascending order... That is all my complaint.
I was looking at a few things, including their actual statement about this, and from what I can tell I don't think they plan on forcing any map maker to charge for a map. Which means it's also a challenge for the map makers. If you want to charge for your map, you need to make it worth the cost of playing it. So really, they will have free and paid versions of many game types but the big difference is the paid versions will likely be less buggy and more features than the free ones.
Imagine if the people who made the DotA maps could work on improving it/releasing new versions full time, since they got paid to do it. They'd be able to work out bugs sooner, and make it an even better game that it already is...
Though, I wonder, using this system, could they charge for Major updates of a map you've already paid for? What if someone made a World of Starcraft map, and each month released a mandatory "Major" update, forcing you to pay for it or the old version won't be able to access your stored character info... and any bug fixes would be free "Minor" updates that you just download. Suddenly you have a monthly subscription map and have to pay to continue playing it. Anyone else see something like this happening? Of course, I wouldn't even pay for first try version of it unless it had enough content to keep me busy that whole month.
I'm just pointing out though, that a system like this could pay a small team to constantly work on and improve a map like that, if Blizzard would actually "pay" the map makers (real money anyone?).
tl;dr paying for maps could lead to some really well done and amazing maps, but I don't think it'll kill free maps completely.
Nah I think it would be like the Android or iPhone market, they just charge software purchase. So if you buy a map liscence ur set and you can receive updates from then on too. However if you think about it, in one battle.net server, there are like 300,000 players, if 50% of the players buy your map priced at $6, and Blizzard gets a 50% share, then you get $3*300,000 = $900,000 (Optimistic range).
I think all the games blizzard made have that. HOWEVER: since you now HAVE to publish a map to battle net to play it with people, it makes it easier. blizzard has become more controlling of their fans. I completely believe they DO intend to take our maps and sell them. And I for one, will NOT be paying for maps unless they are good enough to be a stand alone game.

its them covering their asses from getting sued for maps called "Revenge of the nig*s" and that other wc3 game where ur little kids running away from priests and than there was puffy the magic dragon where u escape something drug related... my $0.02
Blizzard doesn't intend to steal our maps or anything like that.
Pretty sure the legal clause about them owning our maps existed in WC3 as well. Also, premium maps would be completely optional for the map maker, as has been stated. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to charge for updates or stuff like that, would be pretty lame.
