Time for an opinion probing. Think about all the 'campaigns' you've played across many different games and genres.
Do the good ones immediately stick out in your mind?
What made them memorable?
So far, this is the only kind of map I enjoy making, and I want to get good at it. I think some of you veterans have come from War 3 and SC1 mapping communities, perhaps you could share some specific insight into what made good campaigns in those communities.
What I want to do with my new project is create different blends of tactics with (mostly stock) Terran and Protoss units, while adding some new units of my own. Like the various campaign scenarios in the SC2 campaign, these units are one 'gimmick' I'm adding to make things different. My last question, did you think the SC2 campaign over did it with these scenarios?
Honestly, the starcraft 2 campagin was by far the best rts campagin I have ever played. It crushed every other campagin I've ever played. Here's why (in my opinion)
Flexibility with what missions you pick
Tech purchases that last the entire game, not just 1 mission.
Research points made the optional goals actually worth doing
Replay Value was very good. Theres lots of stuff you can't get in a single play through, plus the mission branching at those key points
This is the most important. Not a single mission was like another one. Wc3 and sc1 had TONS of missions that were basically the same 'build up, kill enemy' with different optional quests. But every single mission was drastically different than any other mission, so it as a fresh experience each mission.
Like I said up there, the most important if the mission variety. I cant stand it when people make a "campagin" map and the objective is to build up and kill the enemy. I could have played melee if I wanted to do that.

Zelda kind of spoke my mind in regards to the SC2 campaign. If we stick to RTS campaigns, SC2 has basically got it nailed. Mainly because there's RPG aspects in there that improve immersiveness.
If we're just comparing "SC2 Singleplayer" to other games, the case differs a little bit, though. There are a lot of games I played through that stick out in my mind. Half-life had AMAZING progression and a good storyline. Mass Effect... well yeah, is Mass Effect. Assassin's Creed has done an amazing job of making a conspiracy theory into a game. Heroes of Might & Magic 4 has SICK depth in its storyline, with everything up to its characters' haircuts explained. All of these games have a less hollywood-inspired theme than SC2 too, which is the one thing I really disliked about the campaign.
Assassin's Creed was a great game. I'd like to find out who came up with such a crazy story. lol.. And I just found out the entire story ties into the whole 2012 doomsday thoery.... Shesh. And I think it was historically accurate with a lot of the events and characters, too.
As for non-rts campaigns... Definitely AC 2 and AC brotherhood because of the freedom you get and the great gameplay. Theres lots of different ways to get to your goal (stealthy assassin, fight people, hire mercs, run away from guards, etc...) so you can kind of pick the style of play you want. Plus there is replay value because of the optional objectives in brotherhood that each mission has. You can go back and finish up all those to unlock extra stuff. Then theres all the optional side quests you can do that once again enhance the amount of freedom and choices you have. The only thing I dislike about AC brotherhood is the ending, which I hate, because its such a horrible cliffhanger. >.<
The Mass Effect series. It got me thinking and replaying over and over again. The main reasons are these:
Interesting story
A whole new world
Team managment - I really got a feeling that everyone of them are real persons, not just game-entities. Their side-missions were really interesting and repeating. Also, relationship is a +.
Paragoon/Neutral/Renegade.
Beautiful world. There were some placed in the game, that made me slow down and watch at the nature, or an amazing landscape.
About Desmond: It wasn't his intention, no? I can't even imagine what kind of story awaits :S I'm nervous :S
Ilike the Age of Empires 3 The Asian Dynasties campaigns quite a bit. They have homecities so you can research different things at different times. There aren't really any objectives, but secondarys give you bonuses like more experience. Replayability? You can get through it 2-3 times without getting bored but after that, really no point.
I don't think I spoiled anything...I just said there was a cliffhanger. :D
But I don't play too many games. Cod and halo are made for multiplayer and as such, the campagin is less than awesome. BioShock 2's campagin was decent, again because of the flexibility offered to players. Lots of choices to make.

I'm not sure if that was a typo or a joke, but that's the one thing I kind of dislike about ME2; it's either full Paragon or full Renegade. Renegade makes you a complete asshole and Paragon makes you anal beyond hippie level. I decided to go Paragon because hey, I'm not a bastard, but I did find the side mission of the scientist rather annoying, where my character insisted on consistantly telling him that "all life is sacred" and all that crap while I personally fully understood why he had done it and agreed with his point of view.
I guess it's not that bad now that I fully read all of it, but it was more the first sentence. I didn't have a clue where they were going with the whole conspiracy theory thing and hadn't guessed they'd make 2012 tie into it. According to a pall there's hints for that as early as game 1 though, so I guess it's my own fault.
Ohhh. I didn't play the first game but I think it does talk about it there. Didn't think about that, I thought you were talking about the cliffhanger bit. My apologies :D

For me it's a plus. Some people like to be such assholes, and I know some examples. Even one of my classmates is an asshole, and he likes it :D
Also, I don't no bad in paragon as a Peacemaker. It fit's the world, where you decision has ability to change others or world.
Star wars Knights of the old republic is definitely one of the best
you can play as one of 9 characters each with a different talent tree
you have loads of choice which can turn you into a dark sider and a light sider (different endings for both based on a final choice)
really good story until the 3rd last world
major plot twist
each of the individual characters has their own story you can learn
choices you make affect the entire game
lots of armors and clothes your characters can wear (or none if thats what you prefer though they still have underwear)
basicly if you haven't played it before don't go read up the story but go get it and play it through to the very end

It does. I've only played AC1 so far and the ending has some stuff about 2012 in it.
