i haven't been able to find any information on what blizzard plans to do to address the popularity filtering issue since the blizzard community manager posted on the custom map forums exactly 3 weeks ago to date that they know the popularity system "sucks" and they are working on a solution to the problem. has anyone heard anything?
prior to starcraft 2, if i had read that post i would have had complete faith in blizzard to come up with the best solution for the game and the players. however, after their merger with activision and their sociopathic CEO robert kotick, i have zero faith whatsoever.
instead, i have complete faith that they will do what they think will maximize profits. i say "think" because many of the "features" of SC2 and BNet 2.0 in particular have completely shattered the trust that the RTS community once had in blizzard to create the best games possible. looking on amazon.com, SC2's rating after almost 1,000 reviews is only 3 stars out of 5. previously, all other blizzard games had been at least 4.5 stars. because they were that good. if blizzard doesn't clean up its act, i think we may be witnessing the death of the starcraft franchise.
i can't speak for anyone else but i personally will not be buying any sequels or expansions to this game unless the situation improves. i'm already bored of it because i can't play custom maps anymore since the only ones that show up are the same old crap that has been up there for weeks. in fact, if nothing changes i'm probably done with blizzard games in general at this point.
Well, they havn't officially released any information, nor do I think they have unofficially, but I still have faith in that they will get it right somewhere along the road, might not be an optimally short way down, but you have to take into consideration that the SC2 has only been released about a month, the really great custom games that will be timeless are still in development, some of them aren't even stared.
I'd say that a couple of months from now, hopefully, ums in starcraft will be just about right. Just hoping that they won't let me down.
i have hope but i don't have faith. with the release of SC2 and all of its "features" i have come to realize that this is not the same blizzard that has made so many games of the year. the old blizzard's goal was always to create the best game possible, even if their profits weren't quite as high as they could be (though their profits have been immense for some time). this new blizzard's goal is clearly to maximize profits and that's it.
my hope is the activision-blizzard executives decide that most of the things that are good for the game are also good for their wallets. but after playing SC2 for a while now it seems like this will not happen.
why is a popularity system a problem? most liked maps are on top of the list.
but the current popularity system is not a good one, a minutes played per hour would be a better way and help long/many player maps.
I don't know how the maps in wc have been sorted but i don't like to scroll down ten pages to find the map i'd like to play.
Well you already have to scroll down ten pages to find the map you want to play when it's not a popular map. And after that it's even harder to get a game started. I understand their thinking with how much DOTA clutters up the game list, but there's gotta be a better way. The maps on the front page are just maps that you can mindlessly play and play quick (so there's more games per hour to bump the popularity). Another flaw of the system is say I want to play a diplomacy map (hypothetically, since not many are out) and I choose the europe version. Well the Europe version now has to split popularity with the Africa and Asia versions since they aren't all included under the same thing.
"why is a popularity system a problem? most liked maps are on top of the list."
This isn't true with Blizzard's popularity system. In the old days, if people like a map, they'll re-host it. With this popularity system, it isn't people re-hosting, its people clicking maps on the 1st page to see what it is. Thus, the maps are perpetually getting played. So unpopular maps can get stuck to the top, and really popular ones where people would re-host could get left behind and disappear.
the most bad maps are falling as fast as they rose to the first page. after two or three days everyone has clicked them once and is no longer interested.
the feature system is a good step into the right direction I guess. They should feature like 5 maps random every day. if the people like it its going to rise afterwards. people keep looking for maps they like.if your map has been featured and then drops back to nowhere, maybe it just sucks hard.
popularity definitely shouldn't be the default sorting option. in fact, i'm not convinced it should even be an option at all as it is currently killing the custom map scene.
but anyway we're kind of off topic again. i was hoping someone had some info on what blizzard was planning to do to address this issue since it's been 3 weeks since the community manager said they were working on solutions and still no word.
Dudes and dudettes we all have come to the same conclusion that we hate the fact that there is no way to search for maps other then clicking show more and scrolling though the list.
Im pretty sure blizz has said they will address this.
Im pretty damn sure they will allow people to search for maps by name and catagory in the future were all just gonna have to wait for it.
Bnet "2.0"(more liek .5) is still being created. There is no chat support no clan support. Give it time people. If your map is suffering from the popularity seems like most of ours are there is nothing you can do but be patient. People will be playing SC2 custom maps till the end of time. Work on your maps so that they cant withstand the test of time. If nobody is playing your map and you find it dissapointing as most of us here probably are feeling a little of right now, just bear with it. Blizz will come up with something Im sure everybody can be happy with.

Anyone noticed, the "show new" option doesn't have 50 page list anymore? When I first used it, it has a long list of maps. But today when I used it, there's only like 4-5 pages of stuffs.
and amazingly enough, while testing the game online, my beta map showed up on the "show new" list. And a couple hours later, it jumped to like page 5 on the main popularity list. Which made me scramble to fix the few remaining bugs that was breaking the game. Too bad for the players, the map is still unfinished and has many features not added yet.

@WaterMolecule:
A lot of text, but you don't say anything at al. Why is this a bad game?
cute but you didn't address my question. please stay on topic or don't post at all.
Easily solution is to be creative.

@Atl0s: Go
but would sorting by name bring you more players into your diplomacy map?
it would make it harder to find the good quick mindless instant starting maps, a lot of people are playing.

I'm pretty sure there will be changes on the publishing systems along with the first content patch. It shouldn't be too long before it comes.
