Ever since I opened up a map today, I've been having a really strange graphical problem. Black 'spots' appear on my map, seemingly shadows of objects I have scrolled over. I have absolutely no idea where they're coming from and more importantly, how to get rid of them, as I can't map like this. For a more detailed explanation, check the screenshots; the first one is an older map of mine that I loaded up. The second one is a test map I created and saved - when opening that from scratch, no weird blackness appears, but as you can see the last 'image' of blackness I saw on my previous map gets stuck solid to my screen, even on the new map. Just look at the pics, it's hard to explain this.
What I've tried;
-Restarting my PC
-Playing a game of SC to see if it was my video card or such - everything works perfectly in-game.
-Opening older maps and newer maps to see if it had something to do with a patch of some sorts. Apparently, maps made with the current version of the editor do not create the black 'goo', but it does get carried over from older maps. There is also a map of which I do not know with which version of the editor it was initially made (EW, if you're reading this, that's your map) - I have the problem here as well.
-Checking all in-editor options to see if I had some kind of odd lightning option enabled.
I suppose I could still reinstall the game, but before I commit to that I figured I'd ask here. Does anybody have the slightest idea where this bug comes from and/or how to fix it?
You`re probably right. Not too long ago, It was reported that Comodo anti-virus could black screen the game at launch. While that may have nothing to do with the editor. A change of some sort to your system could have brought this about.
Personally, I would just do a system restore. To a day or two or whenever it last worked.
Unfortunately, There is not much documentation on graphical errors via the editor. My searching yielded no helpful results.
Edit: What happens when you re-save an older map(to a different name). Close editor, then re-open that?
have you installed something else (that has nothing to do with sc2)?
it looks like a graphics card,/ plugging / synching problem
sorry to say, looks more computer linked then "sc2 only" related (i mean :( cp reinstall / graphics card problem or worse)
good luck, hope someone gives u an easy fix
Now that you mention it... A week or two back I suddenly started having a problem where, whenever I turned my PC on, I'd get a 400X600 resolution with the message that "I didn't have any drivers installed". Sometimes restarting my PC fixed the problem, sometimes it didn't. One day when I got annoyed with it, I completely removed my old drivers and installed new ones. This fixed the problem. Furthermore, this was one or two days after I last opened the editor - ever since then I haven't opened the editor, until today. It does indeed sound like it's a graphics card syncing problem, especially since I can make, save and re-open new maps without any problem. I guess I will have to reinstall SC2 to fix it.
thats pretty crazy ... it shows that same black stuff every time you open the terrain editor?
does it appear when you play other games
do you only see it in the sc2 editor
Does it go away if you close the terrain editor
sounds like the terrain editor may use a "temp file" of some sorts for helping to display the terrain. and it may have corrupted at some point... I know I get similiar effects from some of the other programs I uses but restarting them ussually fixes it.

1. does it appear when you play other games
2. do you only see it in the sc2 editor
3. Does it go away if you close the terrain editor
No, it's not always the same. It's very hard to describe, but the black goo changes depending on my camera movement. I'm sure you've all had a windows window crash on you before - it's similar to that; when you move the window around, it leaves a 'copy' of itself where it used to be while moving to the new location on top of the 'copy'. Something like this. As for your other questions; "Nope", "Yup" and "Yup" in that order.
I just reinstalled the game and still have the problem. I might need to see if I can somehow reinstall my drivers or such...
As for Stragus' additions... Good one - I'll need to try that. Will report back once I've tried other PCs.
Now this is odd. Whenever I put my shaders to 'low' or 'medium', the map just completely blacks out ALL textures. I can still see doodads and water just fine, but every piece of actual terrain turns black. Scrolling doesn't give the weird 'artifacts' anymore, it's just that I can't see any textures. At 'high', 'ultra' and 'ultra+' the black goo is back as it was before.
I suppose to move on, I need someone else to open one of my older maps and see what happens. Anybody in here would like to give me a hand?
Tried that too - doesn't seem to have any impact either. I don't think it's an editor-specific error. I've sent EW one of my older maps, waiting for a reply from him. If nothing works, I guess I'll have to abandon my older projects (luckily I didn't have anything going). As for your map EW; I suppose I can copy the entire terrain and doodads into a new map - I guess that would work for both of us.
Assuming I can't get it fixed and updating my drivers doesn't help.
Edit: EW just PM'd me back; looks like my older maps work fine on other PC's, Almaity.
When I go to 'troubleshoot' it tells me that I cannot change any options from that window with the driver I currently have.
I think I did fix it though! I fiddled a bit with my driver options. When that didn't work I updated them. The update didn't fix the problem, but it did give me some new options to fiddle with - I ended up disabling the Catalyst AI option, and now I can load up older maps just fine again. It would seem that the AI option that comes with ATI drivers may end up behaving a bit strangely in excentric cases such as mine, where it loads everything up perfectly fine when a new map is created but has problems loading up old maps that were created without the AI option.
I haven't restarted my PC yet or any of that jazz, but I've loaded up two seperate maps that didn't work before, and they are both working fine now.
Now, time to finally release my custom map contest map and get to work on your project, EW :)
This was definitely an interesting bug/problem(albeit `rare` )... I`ll make a note of it for archival purposes. Dont want people pulling their hair out for something that requires disabling the Catalyst AI option.

The same thing. It would seem that the problem occurs with anything that was originally created before now.
Looks like I'll go ahead and reinstall the game, then go on from there.

Do you get the same problem opening the map on a different computer? Does anyone else have trouble when opening your map?
If yes, the map is broken and the problem could perhaps be investigated and fixed in the raw XML files.
If not... check your computer again.

looks kinda like it could be your camera clipping settings...
try creating a new camera and use the preview camera view.... do you still see it?
If they are actual shadows of soemthing, try setting your shaders to low. There are no real shadows on low shaders.
Hope ya get it fixed :(

Tried the camera thing, didn't help.

try ... reseting the lighitng...
dunno never really seen anything like that ... but if your terrain turns black tells me something about the lighting.

Go to your "Display properties", Then "Settings" ---- "Advanced"----- "Troubleshoot"
Uncheck "Write combining"
And Set hardware acceleration two bars down(from the top). Aka "Disable cursor and advanced drawing accelerations".
See if it might help.
