Man, I'll be honest, I don't like HotS for the story. But I sure can't complain for the load of new assets the expansion brought. Yeah, call it hype, overpraising, overcritizing, whatever, but I swore somewhere along the line (I can't remember) that I'd update my work to be playable only by HotS if the assets were decent enough. Well, lo and behold, I'm revamping stuff, which should be worked on as soon as I'm done.
To get you an idea of how this will affect, I made a small 'before and after' case, just to show you the changes and how serious they'll change stuff. That and all the learning on terraining I've been getting with you guys.
Enjoy.
/edit I'm still stuck in the city map. I'm still to finalize the industrial district and then the housing neighborhood, which is, IMO, my worst work on a map thus far.
Nice, nice. I like how you replaced a lot of the kitbash buildings with proper new ones. Kitbashes rarely look as good as complete doodads when ti comes to cities, though you've managed to find a nice mix between the two now. I'm quite curious to see these changes in a non-city map to see what you'll do to your more natural areas...
I'd say all of the after images are better than their predecessors. Your terrain work is phenomenal, which is one of the reasons I love having you as an Amber Sun tester. Now, let us play this already!
Yeah, well, you'll see that by yourself by the time I'm finished with the city's reconstruction and stuff. So far, the only organic terrain I've worked thus far is the Lava world, which didn't do that much because it didn't need the new lava assets that much. Just some bits here and there. I should get to those by the time I've revised the city and then worked on it's destroyed/infested version in the Terran campaign. Then, it's an express train through out the remainder of the Zerg and Protoss campaigns.
It's not entirely finished. It's been a revamping mess since HotS came out, because I liked the assets and how they solved an enormous amount of terraining problems, not only gameplay, but lore-wise. I don't want to disappoint you people on the Terrain aspect, but I need time to work that out dude. I'm a map maker, not a MIRACLE maker, you know. xD
On a side note, glad you liked the differences. That was the idea of improvement I had in mind. :)
City (Intact, unoccupied version) is finished. I'm starting on the infested/destroyed/ruined version as of now. I could use some advice of sorts in this criteria, I know it's the beginning of the work, but I'm feeling this scene is just too generic.
First of all, make the entire city, but blank. Slap down any kitbash buildings and roads. Then work to adding ruined buildings, followed by all the chaos in that scene. Try to spread things out, instead of shoving them all in one scene. Except the entrance. That looks sexy. ... You couldn't possible copy that entrance onto another map and send it to me... Pretty please?

Wot is kitbash
@ScrinKing: Go
A kit of doodads bashed together. I.e. using a lamp post, fences, floor boards, antennae and terrain cliffs to create a good looking building.

It's perfect.
