I think the format for entries should be like this: -The entries are SC2 maps (not a screenshot or a video) -The maps does not need to be playable (No needs of minerals, playable areas, etc) -There is no fog of war in the maps (so you can see everything) -Units and buildings are not allowed in the maps -The maps should be relatively small but not TOO small (you can leave a patch of terrain blank around if you like) -No trigger (except possibly for the no fog thing) -The camera should be limited to default (No custom or first person) -Limited usage of custom models is allowed but not evaluated
That the idea. Tell me what you think about it. I think a contest like this would improve the quality of maps in generals.
Oh and sorry, I said I would post my terrain work but I'm kinda lazy today. Maybe I work on it tonight. Shame I deleted all my old melee maps...
Nice trying to flesh out the details of the possible future contest, but I disagree a bit. I don't think there is a need for more requirements than a general theme. The way you choose to display the map, the pictures you take of it so to speak, are integral to the way you decide to design the terrain. So I would say that the actual contest would be "which screenshot/scene of a map you made is the best looking". Your rules would better fit a contest about the best looking melee map.
Yes indeed a screenshot would be fine too and some requirement could be scraped but the contest should not be the best looking melee map. I think the purpose of such a contest is to bring out concepts that could be integrated in future maps, whatever their style is.
Here's something I stumbled upon by accident the other day, and I saw loads of creative uses for it.
Basically, you make a doodad, and give it the model of a units portrait (I used the mule in my example pic)
It has all the animations of the portrait, and if you hide out the ugly background, the possibilities are awesome.
In my example, I used the Mule Portrait, to look sort of like a control panel, and because it has these fail wires hanging infront of it, I fix them by adding pipes to their ends to fill it out.
Another good example is to use The Immortal's portrait on the temple ruins walls, or in pyramids, as they appear as protoss men sealed away in glass.
good find zarakk! good way to make some interesting 'machines'... ill post a sshot of some things ive been playing with. nothing as good as you guys but its all i got!
the first few are just some 'temple' / 'golden city' thing i started at work tonight (im working graveyard so i bring my laptop...). my next temple will kick ass, ive got some great ideas for it!
the 3rd has some 'oil refining' stuff my map partner made. the whole cave has a roof so it seems enclosed in 1st peron from the inside, but the next picture is sc2 default so you can see into the cave still.
the next 2 are just playing with some doodads sizing /hdr stuff. and some sweet stairs. (i just made the stairs, didnt make them lookpretty or line up with anything obviously...) would have to make the terrain hidden and slope it up, then make rocks/etc... lowered to appear like a ground underneath it and make the stairs functional. but cool looking stairs i think... as the 'sky bridge' is just the bridge resized to walking lengths.
the last is a house i made with some paneling stuff resized from ingame. the same 'inhouse' applies, from within the ceiling is always visible, but on the outside once you enter it goes invisible. my game give the player a choice of view / control mode in game so its important to make me all work. :) theres also an attached 'rustic kinda 'raw' paneling of a tube resized to hell... haha... resizing is the name of my game! not the best, but with some more creativity itll find a better place no doubt..
the last is a 'refinery' location my partner made. hes pretty creative!
I have made a custom building using a bunch of different doodads. I have grouped the selection. How can I save the selection as a unit itself so I can set it as a structure?
Glowing eyes for a statue using neon tubes shrunk down and HDR multiplier increased. (left statue has eyes in the model already, right statue has the eyes i made)
Maybe its not new for you guys but I was always in search for an wooden fence. Even if you arn't in a medival setting you still could be really in use of one if you want to do some agriculture enviroment on Agria or stuff - were a metal fence with electricity on top just dont match.
So, I finaly found some doodates to creat on (used agrigrounddetails variation 2 and 4)

Amazing job. Perfect example of using one thing for something completely different that what it was made for.
Also, sorry for the bump, but the link is on the front page.
amazing stuff guys, I am really impressed

Bringing this old topic back to live :D
