There must be a way to increase player count. If we can have unlimited, or so it seems, spectators shouldn't we be able to give the playable player number go up? What is the max player count? I remember reading that anything over 10 players will crash the game, is this true?
Actually not, I have seen maps of 12 players. I don't know if there is a limit but beware the number of players, if it has lots of players playing (not espectators) the game will be slow, lagged, etc. so that only would work in RPG style maps.
Wouldn't it be slowed more in an RPG? Well the map I'm working on you command certain units and can only communicate with allies if they are close enough to you and it's turn based. So not much going on for each player, it might be slowed down if each player is giving orders at the same time but if they aren't it might go too slow. Battle phase will have to go unit by unit.
Indeed, the limit is 16 players, you can always change the 0: neutral and the enemy one into player slots instead. But remember, whatever you do inside the game to try and bypass this, it wont take place until the map actually starts, and by then the players are already determined by the standard limitation.

14 Playable Slots 2 Computer Slots
0 = Neutral 1-14 = Playable Slots 15 = Hostile
As far as I understand.

It all depends on your map and how you set everything up, with good clean efficient code you'll be able to handle 14 players fine.

16 people can be in a game at the same time.
