I like seeing your progress. Keep us updated. For now, I'll keep my comments to "remember you're going to need textureplay later, rather than filling in one specific area with one texture".
I've been having an issue with texture play on this tile set.
I'm on Xil, and I quite like it, but I'm unsure how I could use the textures I have. It's easy for the dirt, but difficult for the rock. Here's some pics to show you.
It's a start, but you need to think a bit larger. Why combine 2 textures in a specific area when you have 8 at your disposal? You can easily go for 3-4 and throw some cracked dirt in there too. Whenever I try to create an accessible-looking rocky area myself, I tend to add clumps of 3-4 textures, with the rock texture and any kind of 'cracked dirt' being most prevalent while 'normal dirt' and some kind of soft grass/brush are less obvious.
Err, yeah... currently your map looks like it has acne. You can't just toss black rocks around at random with only brown dirt around it. Try adding patches of grass along the cliffside or in clutches, as on the blizzard map. Also, combine the textures. Make them flow over in eachother instead of adding random circles of one texture over the dirt.
I see improvements, but you still gotta work on the transition between the textures. The transition between the rock/grass at the cliffs and the sand looks a little sudden at times.

Yea, I'd say the sand/grass transition is pretty good, but the rock is kind of off.
It's really more the textures in general. Whereas the previous picture looked like your map had acne, this picture looks like your map simply has a bad skin. Take another look at the screenshots you made of 'The Dig'; you'll want all textures to flow over in eachother and never have an area where you can clearly only see *one* texture.
I made a map about a year and a half ago that should still be on the servers called "Verdant Fray". It has a Capture the Flag based gameplay with periodic flooding that players need to avoid :)

I'm not sure which 1 or 2 I should use with this.
Wait...wait...
I think I've got something.
Feedback.

I finally finished 1 base. Whew...
This took 4 textures and 4 hours to complete. Check out the 3 screenshots...
By the way...I'd call this texture mix a "mess" because there's so much different stuff going on...
I found what map Blizzard had this tileset on. It's the drakken laser drill mission...
It looks very different from this map...

A like your maps, infact, I created an underwater melee map a long time ago.. Kinda bad terrain though
Got rid of it though
Work in progress...
