in the mdx importer/exporter there is a box you can tick that says "import as .m3"
Or it MIGHT work if you convert the model to editable mesh then export it with "m3_export_v0.18"
when you go to utilities are all the plugins in the utilities dropdown?
If i try to save as m3 with M3 Export 0.18, it says " No material assigned to mesh ".
I don't know what's wrong.
I'm just try Convert to Editable_Mesh
And using Material Editor.
I haven't tried first hand, but didn't the instruction said that you had to make sure to use SC2 materials or other kind but really specific about that, so maybe that's a problem? IDK
also, are you really THE real Angry video game nerd?
Ok in 5 steps... main parts.

Make sure you have 1 model. 1 mesh, and only 1 mesh on the scene; this is your model. Everything that is not mesh will be tolerated as bone.
Pic 2:
Tip: Before you place texture on your unit, you have to unwrap the model. You can animate it also, before unwraping. But its not important.
Pic 3:
From material editor you have to pick Starcraft 2 material and choose Starcraft 2 Bitmap. Then select your texture. Now just drag texture on your model.
Pic 4:
Go into sequences. Set animations for your model.
Pic 5:
Go into exporting tool and set FPS for your model.
Also bind pose should be frame 0 probbly, and Base pose should be probbly start of stand animation. 1st frame.
Export and import ingame.
If there is something you dont understand, say and I will go into details. Well, just say on what part you bump into a wall.
Those are just 5 main points. I did it like this so you can tell me on what part you stopped.ΕΎ
Now to your problem.
"If i try to save as m3 with M3 Export 0.18, it says " No material assigned to mesh ".

Select your mesh, main mesh. Now Hold ctrl and press I(i) . Your selection will be reverted. Now right click and convert to, editable poly.
Now try. If it will apply, that means that you have more than one mesh on your scene.
\If you cant find it. Then select all parts on the scene you SEE. Press revert selection again. And press delete. Try again.
You're somewhat right but you forgot 1 detail.... you have to convert the .BLP into a .DDS file since that's the new textures they use for SC2.
I successfully imported and export Tichondrius so I can give you some steps I did for it to work.
1. Place it in the right folders (ya stupid step but I have to scratch my head why it wouldn't work lol.)
2. Open it up and go to MAXscript then run all of the scripts.
3. After you import the .MDX into it you need to open the Material Manager by pushing the M button on your keyboard.
4. If you don't have the .DDS file for it yet then go convert the .BLP into a .BMP (with Warcraft III Viewer) and then get the Compressonator to save it as a .DDS file.
5. Return to 3DS MAX and now in the Material Manager you need to click on the button that says Standard, a menu will pop up you need to select Starcraft 2.
6. Still inside the Material Manager you need to go and open the Maps section, there are 3 maps that need to be added, Normal, Diffuse and Speculate (something around those lines) just apply the .DDS on to those 3 maps.
7. Delete the Hero Glow if your model has one cause EVERYTHING must be SC2 mesh, hero glow bugs it like nuts.
8. Press Ctrl+A to select all now in the Material Manager click and drag the orb thing... (yes the orb thing with the textures wrapped around it.) and apply it to the model (it gives you 2 choices make sure it's Assign to Selection.
9. This is where the majority screws it up, you need to OVERWRITE a model in Starcraft 2 (as far as I know) I replaced the Marine for Tichondrius but you can replace it with anything else if you know it's filepath. Let's say you replace Marine anyway... go to your Desktop make a new folder called Assets then inside of it create 2 folders Textures and Models. The .DDS MUST BE IN THE TEXTURES FOLDER! In the Models folder you need to create a new one called Units and inside of that one another one called Terran, then another one called Marines. That is where your model will be stored.
10. Now you're ready to export it, click on export, name your model Marine.m3 (yes it has to be Marine.m3 if you want to overwrite it).
11. Go to your Galaxy Editor then the Import and import both the Marine.m3 and the .DDS file. It's normal if you see your model is a brownish or blackish figure instead of a textured one in the previewer. Place a marine on the map, run the map and it should work.
Yes that is a whole lot of steps just to get a stinken MDX into a M3...
Ya I know I decided to pop up and necropost like a nut lol. Although I can't say I'm gonna be active here cause I already have 2 forums to administrate lol.

well, is there a material assigned to the mesh?
i havnt used the mdx importer/exporter but im guessing you may have to assign a texture folder to "user paths"
